…d references Reference classes overrode Equals and == without GetHashCode, so equal references hashed differently. LINQ Distinct kept duplicates, which made V2 serialization with inlined references throw "An item with the same key has already been added" when two references to the same recursive schema were found in a loop. - Add GetHashCode, using the resolved target's hash (consistent with references comparing equal to their target) or the $ref string when unresolved. - Unresolved references now compare their $ref strings instead of all being equal (null == null), and Equals(null element) returns false. - Setters, inlined serialization and bindings collection operations on an unresolved reference throw InvalidOperationException naming the $ref instead of NullReferenceException. Boolean schema getters return false when unresolved, like the other getters return null. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

I'd be very wary of playing with the whole reference system.
I'll have to spend some extra time looking at this
Nothing in AsyncApiBindingsReference reads Target in a way that allows null, so the throw moves into Target and the extra Resolved property goes. Extensions now goes through Target too instead of the unresolved field, so it resolves the reference and fails clearly when it can't. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

GetHashCode()can change when an unresolvedAsyncApiChannelReferenceresolves. This affects callers that keep such a reference in aHashSetor dictionary and then rely on membership. The reader, serializer, workspace, and tests inspected here do not use channel references as hash keys or callDistinct()on them before later membership checks, so this does not block their ordinary workflows. If hash-key use is a supported API scenario, redesign equality and hashing together or prevent resolution while the reference is a key. A
$ref-only hash is not sufficient because a resolved reference currently compares equal to its target. Add the membership regression test only after selecting that contract.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Thanks for digging into this, @bielu. The crash you hit was real and the PR pointed me right at it. Most of it has now landed on vnext in a different form:
The one part I didn't take is GetHashCode on the reference wrapper classes. The problem is that Target resolves lazily and depends on Reference.Workspace, which the writer sets during serialization. With DoNotResolveReferences, or for references built in code, a reference starts out unresolved, so the hash comes from the $ref string. After serialization the hash comes from the target instead, so the same instance changes hash while it's alive: hash before serialize = -1964358863, after = 44841835 Serializing a document would then silently break any HashSet or Dictionary holding its references. Because a reference also equals its target (but not the other way round), set membership ended up depending on insertion order ({target}.Contains(ref) was false while {ref}.Contains(target) was true). As far as I can tell, no hash code is both stable and consistent with "a reference equals its target", so I left wrapper equality as it is rather than risk a subtle behaviour change. For the same reason, the CS0659 warnings-as-errors and the Resolved / InvalidOperationException changes aren't needed now. Inlining a schema reference that can't be resolved now throws an AsyncApiWriterException naming the $ref. |

Thanks, Alex, you're right about the hash. Because One thing still on |
Problem
All reference classes (
AsyncApiChannelReference,AsyncApiJsonSchemaReference, … andAsyncApiReference) overrideEqualsand==but notGetHashCode(CS0659/CS0661 on every one of them). That causes real bugs:ReferenceInlineSetting.InlineReferencesthrowsArgumentException: An item with the same key has already been added. Key: /components/schemas/Nodewhen two references to the same recursive schema are hit in a loop.AsyncApiComponentscalls.Distinct()on the loop list, which kept both (identity hashes), thenToDictionaryby fragment id.Target, which isnullfor every unresolved reference, so#/components/channels/a == #/components/channels/b.ref.Equals((AsyncApiChannel)null)was alsotrue.NullReferenceExceptionon unresolved references: every setter (set => this.Target.X = value), inlined serialization, the bindings-reference collection members and four bool getters onAsyncApiJsonSchemaReferencedereferencedTargetwithout a check.Change
GetHashCodeon all reference classes: the resolved target's hash, or the$refstring's hash when unresolved. This stays consistent with the existing rule that a reference equals its target, whichAsyncApiChannelandAsyncApiOperationRulesrely on.$refstrings;Equals(null element)returnsfalse.InvalidOperationException: The reference '#/…' is not resolved, so the element it points to is not available.ReadOnly/WriteOnly/Nullable/Deprecatedreturnfalsewhen unresolved, like the other getters returnnull.Directory.Build.propsmakes CS0659/CS0661 errors so this can't come back.?annotations outside a nullable context (CS8632). No behaviour change.Tests
AsyncApiReferenceEquality_Shouldcovers each case; 4 of its 5 tests fail onvnext, and the crash test reproduces theToDictionaryexception. Full suite passes on net8.0/net9.0/net10.0.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
