[Bug]: Black windows in NVIDIA native Wayland games after booting in Smart mode #302

Open

Description

@MeoCag

Distribution

Arch Linux (wm: niri)

Kernel Version

7.2.11-1-ogc

Cardwire Version

v0.13.0-alpha.1

Cardwire GPU list

- AMD Radeon 890M — iGPU, card1, renderD128
- NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti Laptop — dGPU, card0, renderD129

Describe the bug

After booting in Smart mode, NVIDIA games using native Wayland + DXVK show black windows with working audio. Reproduced with Steam and Lutris games.

Niri renders on AMD and is explicitly Allowed in Cardwire. The logs confirm Niri is allowed, but it still fails to open the NVIDIA device. systemd-logind is blocked during the same boot; whether this causes the failure is unconfirmed.

Expected vs Actual Behavior

Expected: Allowed NVIDIA games display correctly after booting in Smart mode.

Actual: Black windows..

Switching to Hybrid and logging out/in fixes it. Switching back to Smart within that working desktop session also works.

Cardwire Daemon Logs

Relevant entries from the same boot:

systemd-logind[749] tried to access GPU 1 (blocked by cardwire)
ALLOW: pid: 1455 process: niri in 41us

Corresponding Niri logs:

error adding device: Failed to open device: No such device (os error 19)
