Some scores were shown with more confidence than the data supported, and a few fell over after a short gap in wear.

readiness and hrv

  • readiness could swing on a single night, and was too sure of itself when you only had a few nights of history.
  • overnight hrv and the stress score could be thrown off by gaps in the data.

illness and breathing

  • an unusually good night could be flagged as a possible illness, and the illness warning reset after a short gap instead of carrying on.
  • the breathing screen spoke confidently from a minute of data and called normal night-to-night noise "running higher". it now only compares against the last month, and only once there's enough history.

everything else

  • the temperature rhythm and alertness forecast put times in the wrong time zone or the wrong part of the day.
  • sleep need, sleep debt, vo2max, workout suggestions and the strain target no longer guess when there's too little data.
  • journal insights went blank once you had more than 12 fields.

independent of the sleep staging PR; they merge in either order. the app picks these up in a follow-up update.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Temperature rhythm analysis now accounts for local time, including daylight-saving changes, and identifies when a rhythm’s timing cannot be resolved.
    • Illness tracking can continue across short gaps in unscored nights.
    • Sleep-debt results indicate when there are too few unconstrained nights for a reliable estimate.
  • Improvements

    • Workout detection, readiness bands, breathing analysis, and heart-rate estimates better handle incomplete or irregular data.
    • Strain reporting now uses the 0–21 scale. Automatic workout detection requires a supplied maximum heart rate.
  • Removals

    • Personal-record tracking and the 0–100 TRIMP strain score are no longer available.

multivariateAnomaly gated on a two-sided mahalanobis distance, so a run of
nights with RHR well down and HRV well up crossed the gate the same way a
deterioration does and surfaced as 'unusual physiology'. only deviations in
the illness direction (RHR up, HRV down, temp up, resp up) now count toward
the distance. the drivers still report the signed deviation.
nocturnalRmssd buckets windows from the first kept NN beat, then looked
the stage mask up in seconds from that beat too. correctRr keeps the
elapsed time of a dropped leading artifact run, and the caller's mask
starts at the first raw beat, so after a dropped run every window took
its stage label that many seconds too early and REM windows could stand
in for NREM ones. I read the mask on the beat clock now (t0 + window
midpoint) and say so in the doc.
…ng past 12 fields

the unreachability gate counted the 1/(b+1) sampling floor of a fixed 999
shuffles as if it were a property of the data. once the family reached 51
tests (13 logged fields x 4 outcomes) that term alone failed the bh check, so
every numeric finding came back insufficient with a need-more-days note that
logging could never satisfy, and adding one field switched off insights that
worked the day before. the shuffle count now scales with the family size
(2m/alpha, capped), the gate only reports the data's own floor as structural,
and a test that no day count can rescue says so instead of promising n+90.
with no floor, dailyActiveMinutes reported progress against the 5-day
summary minimum, but a caller that freezes the floor keeps it null until
14 days. from day 5 to 13 the note read have=9,need=5 on a metric that was
still absent. the need now defaults to enrollmentDaysForFrozenFloor, and a
caller that unlocks earlier can pass its own gate via requiredHistoryDays.
the p75 of a single free night is just that night, so the first weekend of
data decided the result: a short saturday showed up as negative debt and a
lie-in as over two hours of debt that pushed up tonight's need and bedtime.
below three free nights osd and debt are now null, same as having none.

(cherry picked from commit 581b56f8a91b2884641dee79ba5f453ab1acae84)
with 14+ baseline nights but a flat or whole-bpm rhr baseline the gate is
null, and that branch returned need_baseline:have=28,need=14. more nights
never clear it, so it read as still collecting forever. it now returns the
same degenerate_baseline / baseline_dispersion_below_quantum notes the
illness cusum uses, and keeps need_baseline for a genuinely short window.

(cherry picked from commit 54e61188861532ea98a7f407f9fc81ebc2075f63)
sleepDebt took the p75 of however many free nights it had, so with one
weekend night that night's duration came back verbatim as osd_hours and
became tonight's sleep need, recommended bedtime and sleep performance
baseline. one 11 h saturday in week one moved the need from 7 h to 11 h.
osd and debt now stay null until there are 3 free nights, and both
cold-start notes use the need_baseline:have=H,need=N form.

(cherry picked from commit 7fc9e449340c67c352f98e289c46ccf653859a72)
with dates passed, every calendar gap restarted the pre-change regime as well
as the accumulator, so a wearer who charges overnight once a week never built
up the 10-point baseline and no shift was ever reported. a gap now resets only
the accumulator; the regime restarts only after a gap longer than 28 days,
when the old level is too stale to be a baseline.

(cherry picked from commit 9575eb6223f13cddbfd3ea7f72ce1dc9564ca253)
…ands

a night with frequent rr dropouts was split into dozens of 30-127 beat
segments, and every one of them became a full stress index window. short
windows have a narrower range and a taller mode, so their si reads about
twice as high, and the median over them landed in 'elevated' on a normal
night. a window now needs at least 200 beats (about 4 minutes at rest) to
count, and the metric is absent if none qualifies.

(cherry picked from commit 6c958c61d731dd97e5e90ec70ff45eba0ef133ba)
the hole guard let 61-90 day intervals through, so a single missed start could
be charted as a cycle that meets the 60-day long-interval criterion on its own.
the cycle screen already refuses anything over 60, so the two copies of the rule
disagreed on the same log. the cutoff is now tied to the long-interval criterion.

(cherry picked from commit dde5c32d9ca83c81337c52766df141716fa46221)
a single night with no rhr (no main sleep, band off) reset the cusum and
both run counters on the next scored night, so an episode lost its
evidence exactly when sleep goes missing during illness, and alternate-night
gaps could never trip the alarm. up to two unscored nights between scored
nights now carry the run untouched; longer wear gaps still reset it.

when a motion series was supplied but none of its points fell inside a
candidate window, the mean motion came out as 0.0 g, so a bout over a
stretch of seconds with no usable gravity was read as a still wrist and
dropped unless the onset bypass happened to fire. the classifier was also
handed a 0.0 intensity that was never measured. that window is now judged
on hr alone, the same as with no motion series at all.

also adds tests for the detector itself: the gap split, the merge and the
onset bypass.

(cherry picked from commit f781a715e5ed019b491ffc4bfadcd9e0c5348043)
strainTarget always reported inputs_used [recovery, load] and the rationale
'shaped by recovery and recent load', including on a cold start where ctl/atl/tsb
are null and the window comes from recovery alone. load is now listed, and
mentioned in the rationale, only when the fitness-fatigue model actually fed in.

…chored across holes

the header already says wrist dc is only relative to the user's own baseline
on one strap (the same person read 7.6-9.9 ms on gen4 and 1.7 ms on w5), but
the metric went out at Tier.high, so a strap switch looked like an 80% drop in
a high-confidence measurement. it is Tier.relative now and the note says to
compare it within one device family only.

dc also took no beat times, so a single pair straddling a sensor hole could
anchor on its own and publish a 20 ms dc. decelerationCapacity and
accelerationCapacity take optional nnTimesMs and skip any anchor whose window
crosses a seam, using the same contiguity test as hrv_time.

(cherry picked from commit f36c6a45a2ad23a62ee2d7cfeef4632b31a3336b)
tempCircadian fitted the cosinor and binned the IS profile on raw epoch
time, so the reported peak was the utc hour (21:30 for a 03:00 local peak
at utc+5:30) and a dst change inside the record smeared the hour-of-day
profile. it now takes a tzOffsetResolver like segmentSleep and shifts each
sample to local time first, defaulting to the machine's offset at each
instant.

(cherry picked from commit 2b443307ddefc37aed37af8cee30e837d37936fe)
clamping healthy-side z's to zero was assumed to only lower d², but when a
baseline pair is anti-correlated the inverse correlation has a positive
off-diagonal, so dropping the negative member removes a negative cross term
and d² goes up. a night with temp well up and resp well down cleared a gate
the two-sided distance stayed under, and the gate's inflation table was only
ever measured on the two-sided statistic. the distance is now the smaller of
the clamped and two-sided forms, so it stays one-sided and stays bounded by
what the gate is calibrated for.

(cherry picked from commit ab65caa44b1f4dbc743937b228ad69817396e3d3)
a flat or rhythm-free series still got an acrophase out of atan2 on rounding
or noise, and the app showed it as the user's rhythm peak and fed it to the
alertness forecast as a phase fitted on their own data. the fit now runs the
zero-amplitude f-test and leaves the acrophase null unless it rejects at 0.05,
so the forecast falls back to its disclosed population phase. the test's p
value is exposed as amplitude_p.

(cherry picked from commit 4c1488ca1b5d6b57fe6ecd4baa311a1a1f364436)
…n curve

the curve fell back to the population phase on a NaN acrophase but the note
was picked by a null check, so it still said the phase was fitted on the
user's own data. one predicate now picks both. also adds regression tests
pinning the zero-amplitude gate: rotating shifts, noise and a flat series
leave the acrophase null, a real noisy rhythm still places it.

(cherry picked from commit f0efc841c697c7105e5abe5367d0dd402655eea2)
the one-sided clamp zeroed good-side z components before taking the
mahalanobis form, on the assumption that this can only lower d2. with a
negative correlation between two oriented features the inverse has a
positive off-diagonal, so dropping the good component removed a negative
cross term and raised d2 instead. a night with high rhr and slower
breathing scored above the same night with neutral breathing, and above
the two-sided distance the gate was calibrated on.

the one-sided distance is now capped at the two-sided one.

(cherry picked from commit ebdad1d2438ff6198dbb81bbbad2c0f7cfcef372)
the 12 h ultradian term was phase-locked to the circadian acrophase with
no offset, so it peaked at 16:48 and bottomed out at 10:48. in the
three-process model its trough sits 3 h before the acrophase (~13:48),
which is the afternoon dip the term is there to model. it now uses that
offset and sign, so the curve no longer sags in late afternoon while the
circadian peak is still rising.

(cherry picked from commit efb6ee17b67bfa9fd670c0e2e93ac1549cfa1a94)
the swc band (half a robust sd) was applied to tonight's single lnrmssd, which
is well inside night-to-night noise, so a user whose hrv never changed read
'suppressed' or 'elevated' on most nights. plews compares the 7-day rolling
average against the swc; the band now uses the mean of the last 7 nights
ending tonight (calendar days when dates are given). z stays single-night.

(cherry picked from commit efe3af891841b3fc772910d7500bb86093068d96)
comparing the 7-night rolling mean to the band didn't work with this baseline.
the rolling week shares six nights with the window the centre and spread come
from, so a real multi-night drop pulled the centre down with it and mostly
went unflagged, and one old bad night kept an ordinary tonight 'suppressed'
(with z near 0) for the rest of the week.

the band is back to a single-night decision, but with a single-night
threshold: tonight outside centre +/- 1 robust sd (kiviniemi's daily
reference value) instead of plews' half-sd swc, which is meant for a rolling
mean and sits inside one night's noise. a stable user now reads 'normal' on
most nights and a 2 sd drop is still caught most of the time. the swc field is
unchanged.

a NaN or infinite avg/resting/max heart rate made vo2maxSubmaxEstimate
throw from inside its own abstention branch, because the note called
round() on the non-finite %HRR. a NaN hr_max also slipped past the
reserve check since NaN fails every comparison. I reject a non-finite
reserve up front and only format the %HRR into the note when it is finite.

(cherry picked from commit 14b2254c27c2b072ff817d19c7a2f7262f3bf7eb)
the per-night cvhr rate took its confidence from the artifact fraction alone and always reported tier HIGH, so one dip in a short clean stretch after contact dropouts read as ~50 cycles/h at 0.85. confidence now also scales with analysed hours up to the same 4 h a night needs for the 30-night screen, and nights under that report as ESTIMATE.

(cherry picked from commit c9296b647be997373648d9436358bb7e33e989d6)
it was exported through the barrel but nothing called it. the ln-based
readiness paths each guard their own log, so the helper was only an
unguarded-looking alternative waiting to be picked up.

(cherry picked from commit 468523880bf8cb3bcee45f81d91475e504078270)
the single-night band was centre ± 1 MAD of the prior 3-7 nights. the MAD
of that few points runs small and the band had no room for a new night's
own noise, so a user whose hrv never changed was still flagged suppressed
or elevated on 62% of nights with 3 prior nights and 45% with 7. the band
half-width is now scaled per window size so a steady user is flagged on
about 32% of nights, the rate mean ± SD gives with known parameters.

(cherry picked from commit ae9390fd33ed53db9d39c19abb8fc9dbb99581e0)
personalRecord and RecordCheck were exported but no product path ever read
them, and nothing said what they were waiting on. they still leaned on the
robustBaseline/mdc semantics, so any baseline change had to keep an unused
record detector green. removed them with their test and the ALGORITHMS.md
mention (which also described streaks that were never built).

(cherry picked from commit aaa1913fb9b249678b8ad90e4d54ff190a73c91d)
strainScoreMetric and strainScoreFromSeries each hand-copied the same
confidence/calibrating rule, so a change to one would leave the other
reporting different confidence for the same quiet level while its own
tests still passed. both now build their present metric through one
helper. the doc also claimed the stored-TRIMP rescale goes through
strainScoreMetric; it doesn't, and calling bare strainScore there skips
the non-finite and above-ceiling refusals, so the doc says that now.

(cherry picked from commit d54cd01bde4f8d2bde560824eff5ec5914f7a7d1)
the 30-night distribution kept the newest 30 retained rows with no date
bound, so after a wear gap it reached back months and the recent third
mixed the first nights back with nights from before the gap. nights now
have to fall within 30 days of the newest night, and the note says so.

(cherry picked from commit 034dff71cd7e10e5d288a7741a5bcaf3fa640af6)
the file header said the second strain scale was gone, but trimpStrain,
StrainScorer.strain, trimpToStrain, maxStrain and strainDenominator were
still exported. nothing displays that number, so anything wiring it up
would bring back two strains disagreeing on the same stream, and a
cadence check probing it says nothing about the 0-21 strain users see.
the banister helpers (banisterTRIMP, banisterY, sampleDurationsMinutes,
estimateHRmax) stay; the per-sample-duration regression now runs on
banisterTRIMP directly, and the banner no longer mentions edwards.

(cherry picked from commit c0efc7eda6e6e84a5ca5c184934e3049cbe05b1f)
any unscored night (strap re-seated so the night never settled, ambient-excluded, no main sleep) reset the elevated-night run, and so did the next scored night because it was more than one calendar day after the last. three fever nights in four, or any alternate-night pattern, could never reach the persistence threshold. a gap of up to two unscored nights now carries the run without advancing or resetting it, the same tolerance illnessCusum uses; a longer gap still ends it.

(cherry picked from commit 244e5269c643acdd90aabe5fbe5eebe8f9afcc6e)
…ng 190

the suggestion detector filled a missing hrmax with a population 190 and built
its %hrr gate from that, without saying so in the result. for anyone without a
stored age the gate came from a constant: about 12 bpm too high for an older
user, too low for anyone whose real ceiling is above 190. with no ceiling the
detector now returns nothing and the envelope is absent with need_input:hr_max,
the same way a missing resting hr is already handled.

Walkthrough

The pull request updates analytics calculations across clinical, human, respiration, motion, wellness, and workout areas. It changes input validation, signal thresholds, time alignment, gap handling, confidence, and baseline requirements. It also removes the 0–100 TRIMP strain and personal-record APIs.

Changes: Clinical Metrics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rhythm reporting and TRIMP scoring
lib/src/onehz/clinical/cosinor.dart, lib/src/onehz/clinical/load_trimp.dart, ALGORITHMS.md, README.md, test/onehz/clinical_test.dart, test/onehz/strain_calibration_test.dart, test/onehz/util_test.dart
Cosinor fits report phase only when the zero-amplitude test passes. The 0–100 strain APIs are removed. The remaining strain routes share metric construction.
Clinical signal gates and timing
lib/src/onehz/clinical/*, test/onehz/clinical_test.dart, test/onehz/clinical/vo2max_test.dart
PRSA adds timestamp-aware gap handling and relative tiers. Stage-mask timing, illness CUSUM gaps, readiness bands, stress-index windows, and VO₂max validation also change.

Human Metrics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Alertness and coaching calculations
lib/src/onehz/human/alertness_forecast.dart, lib/src/onehz/human/coaching.dart, test/onehz/an_training_human_test.dart, test/onehz/coaching_test.dart, test/onehz/journal_numeric_correlations_test.dart
The forecast uses a finite fitted phase or a population phase and shifts the Process U trough. Coaching provenance and numeric-correlation permutation handling change.
Baseline handling and removed APIs
lib/src/onehz/human/overreaching_conjunction.dart, lib/src/onehz/human/percentile_of_you.dart, lib/src/onehz/human/sleep_regularity.dart, lib/src/onehz/util.dart, test/onehz/human_test.dart, test/onehz/overreaching_conjunction_test.dart
Baseline results use more specific notes and sufficiency rules. Sleep debt adds a configurable minimum free-night count. Personal-record APIs and safeLn are removed.

Motion Activity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Active-minutes history gate
lib/src/onehz/motion/steps.dart, test/onehz/steps_test.dart
dailyActiveMinutes adds requiredHistoryDays and uses it in absent-metric notes.

Respiration Metrics

Layer / File(s) Summary
CVHR confidence and personal distribution
lib/src/onehz/respiration/cvhr_apnea.dart, test/onehz/respiration_test.dart
CVHR confidence reflects analyzed coverage. Personal comparisons use a calendar-bounded window and require enough older reference nights.
Respiratory signal windows
lib/src/onehz/respiration/resp_rate.dart, test/onehz/respiration_test.dart
RSA floor-pinned windows count against consensus. Tests cover low-rate signals and CVHR comparison windows.

Wellness Metrics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Anomaly and change detection
lib/src/onehz/wellness/anomaly.dart, lib/src/onehz/wellness/changepoint.dart, test/onehz/wellness_test.dart
Anomaly distance uses illness-direction deviations. Calendar gaps reset CUSUM accumulators, while the baseline restarts only after staleAfterDays.
Temperature and cycle rules
lib/src/onehz/wellness/temp_circadian.dart, lib/src/onehz/wellness/temp_health.dart, lib/src/onehz/wellness/cycle_lengths.dart, test/onehz/wellness_test.dart, test/onehz/an_training_human_test.dart
Temperature analysis uses resolved local offsets while retaining UTC chronology. Illness runs can span configured unscored-night gaps. Cycle intervals over 60 days are refused.

Workout Detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detection inputs and bout rules
lib/src/onehz/workout/auto_detect.dart, test/onehz/auto_detect_test.dart
Detection abstains when HRmax is absent. Missing in-window motion is treated as unavailable. Tests cover motion, onset, gap, merge, and HRmax cases.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Keep the two occurrences of a repeated fall-back hour distinct in _nonparam.

Wall-clock timestamps give both occurrences of a repeated local hour the same epoch key. _nonparam averages them into one bin, so the transition between them does not count as a step in IV, and the epoch coverage count drops by one. The DST test covers only a spring-forward step. Bin on UTC for chronology, use local time only for the hour-of-day profile, and add a fall-back test.

Suggested direction

This is a direction, not a verified diff. Inspected source does not establish a localized edit that keeps chronology and hour-of-day alignment together, so no code change is proposed.

An invalid floor can leave the metric absent while producing a met-looking baseline note. This behavior existed at the merge base, and this PR does not worsen it.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 458ba3644745); the change keeps it reachable.

Exclude sub-30-second dropouts from analyzedHours.

CvhrResult.analyzedHours is documented as observed, gap-excluded time. However, cvhrApneaScreen keeps adjacent gaps at or below maxGapSec in one segment and adds the full endpoint span to analyzedHours. Repeated 20–29-second dropouts can therefore inflate coverage. _scoreSegment also interpolates across those gaps, so sufficient sparse data can receive confidence 0.85 and Tier.high.

This behavior predates this PR: the merge base has the same segmentation, span accounting, interpolation, and HIGH-tier path.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 458ba3644745); the change keeps it reachable.

⚠️ Potential issue | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

The new timestamp seam check does not validate finiteness: a step involving NaN satisfies neither comparison and is treated as contiguous.

PRSA can publish anchors across an invalid time boundary instead of abstaining or splitting the record.

This can occur when: A supplied, length-matched nnTimesMs list contains a non-finite beat time between otherwise valid RR runs.

lib/src/onehz/wellness/temp_circadian.dart:385-388
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Split IS bins by local hour when an offset change is not a whole hour.

After a fractional-hour offset change, the UTC bin grid keeps the first sample's offset. Later bins then hold samples from two local hours. eodOf gives the whole bin the first sample's hour, so the IS profile averages samples from different hours under one label. The label is correct for the first sample only. IV uses UTC bin order and is not affected. Repeated fall-back hours and whole-hour changes keep bins aligned to local hour edges.

The trigger is dense data with a resolver offset change that is not a multiple of one hour, such as a 30-minute zone change inside the record. Every bin after that change can mix hours, not only the bin at the change. The IS profile can then be smoothed across hours, which can lower IS. The size of the effect was not measured.

The fix keys IS contributions by UTC bin and each sample's local epoch-of-day. sums and counts stay unchanged for the IV series. A bin whose samples share one local hour gives the same value as before.

Add a clean whole-second PRSA case with a slow beat interval.

The PRSA timestamp fixtures use exact millisecond times or unrounded doubles. The only whole-second fixture asserts that present is false, so a seam rule that rejects clean data would still pass it. Add a clean slow-rate series with whole-second stamps that asserts present is true. The seam rule at lib/src/onehz/clinical/prsa.dart:141 may fail that case: a 1500 ms beat interval on a whole-second clock gives stamp steps of 1000 or 2000 ms, and a 2000 ms step exceeds nnMs[j] + 0.5. Settle the forward tolerance for whole-second clocks before adding the test. The comment at prsa.dart:135-136 names whole-second source clocks as an expected input, so the expected result for clean data is present.

returns. Preserve the existing `inputs` value when either condition is absent.

Minor comments:
Review comments at @lib/src/onehz/clinical/prsa.dart:
- Line 141: Update the seamBefore timestamp check so a non-finite dt is treated
as a seam, preventing PRSA anchors from spanning invalid beat times; preserve
the existing checks for negative and excessively large steps.

Review comments at @lib/src/onehz/wellness/temp_circadian.dart:
- Around line 385-388: Update the IS accumulation in the code around `eodOf` to
key contributions by both the UTC bin and each sample’s local epoch-of-day,
using separate sums and counts for those sub-bins. Build the IS phase profile
from these sub-bin averages so samples from different local hours are never
combined under one label; leave `sums`, `counts`, and the IV series unchanged.

Nitpick comments:
Review comments at @test/onehz/clinical_test.dart:
- Line 1062: Update the PRSA seam check using nnMs[j] so clean whole-second
timestamps with a 1500 ms beat interval accept the resulting 1000 or 2000 ms
stamp steps; add a clean slow-rate whole-second fixture that asserts present is
true.

a relative metric can still publish a number (raw-adc spo2 and temp, prsa
capacity in ms). the doc said direction or percentile only, which no longer
matched what several metrics serialize.
