On a WHOOP MG the database grew by about 115 MB a day (#609), and every sync spent ages re-scoring days even when nothing new had come in.
stacked on the home and translations PR, last in the series. #610 and #611 fix other causes.
speed
days that haven't changed aren't re-scored. an idle sync went from about 15 seconds to under a second on my test setup.
changing one setting no longer re-scores three weeks of days.
size
raw band data takes about half the space. on a WHOOP MG, two weeks of use went from about 700 MB to 400 MB.
raw readings are now kept for 90 days by default instead of a year. you can pick 30 days, 90 days, a year or forever under settings, your data, storage. older days keep their scores but can't be re-scored after a future update, and shortening it asks first.
unfinished raw data is kept for a week instead of two.
a new "compact database" button in the same place frees up space and says how much. it waits for any sync or workout to finish, and needs enough free space on the phone.
scores don't change, so past days aren't recalculated.
Summary by Sourcery
Reduce database growth and speed up idle synchronization by avoiding redundant rescoring, compacting raw archives, and adding configurable storage retention.
New Features:
Add configurable raw-reading retention and a database compaction action to the data settings.
Add platform-specific free-space reporting to safely gate database compaction.
Bug Fixes:
Preserve and migrate existing raw archives while maintaining compatibility with archive readers, backups, thinning, and replay flows.
Prevent unnecessary rescoring by narrowing quiet-level rescans to affected days.
Enhancements:
Reduce raw archive storage by storing canonical frames as deduplicated binary data instead of duplicated hexadecimal text.
Skip deriving days whose inputs are unchanged and use indexed metadata for faster finalized-day queries.
Reduce the default unfinished raw-data hold to seven days and the default archived-reading retention to 90 days.
Documentation:
Add localized strings for raw-reading retention and database compaction settings.
Tests:
Add coverage for database compaction safeguards, unchanged-day derivation, indexed finalized-day lookup, raw archive migration and storage behavior, retention windows, and narrowed rescans.

Description
Idle syncs skip re-deriving days whose inputs haven't changed, cutting a 15-second idle pass to under a second
Raw archive storage halved: frames stored once as bytes (SHA-1 keyed) instead of twice as hex text; existing archives migrate in background pages
New "Storage" section in data settings: configurable raw-reading retention (30 days / 90 days / 1 year / forever, default changed from 365 to 90) and a "Compact database" button that prunes, VACUUMs, and reports freed space
finalizedDayIds now reads an indexed imported column instead of LIKE-scanning every finalized bundle; quiet-level rescans narrowed to only the days a changed level can reach

Unchanged-day skip, quiet-narrowing rescan, compact action, 7-day hold
Manage raw-reading retention from Data settings, choosing 30, 90, or 365 days, or keeping readings indefinitely. You’ll be asked to confirm before selecting a shorter period; existing scores are preserved.
Compact the database from Data settings to reclaim storage. Progress and results are shown, and compaction may be deferred when storage space is insufficient or unknown, or a sync or session is active.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of stored readings during database updates and rescans.

…ge it
The default is 90 days now, with 30 / 90 / 1 year / forever in the data
settings. Shortening it asks first and evicts the days it no longer covers.
A day older than the window can't be re-scored after a future algorithm
change. A day that never finalizes now holds raw for 7 days instead of 14.

It runs the retention prune and archive eviction a derive pass ends with,
then VACUUM and a truncating WAL checkpoint, behind the derive latch. It
refuses to start during a sync, an offload or a live session, and only
vacuums with twice the database free, read from the platform. It reports
what it freed.

The table kept each frame as hex text under a (device_id, hex) primary key,
so the hex was stored twice, at two characters a byte. A WHOOP MG banks
~10,500 such frames a day. I store the bytes once now, keyed by their SHA-1,
in raw_archive_frames, and raw_archive is a view that still hands every
reader the same hex. Text that isn't canonical hex is kept verbatim.
An existing archive is renamed aside on open and moved over in pages from the
derive pass's housekeeping, each page inserted and deleted in one
transaction; the view covers both tables until it's done. The 1-in-60
thinning stays at the retention edge: thinning at commit would drop
full-rate frames that are kept today for the whole retention window.

A heavy pass re-ran the full derive for every unfinalized day, 8-14 s each,
so a pass with nothing new took close to a minute. I fingerprint what a
derive of a day reads (its substrate window, the user's corrections and
review state, sessions, its own and its neighbours' rows, the baseline
history before it, the profile, the data edge and the algorithm version)
and leave a day alone when the fingerprint matches one stored after a derive
that changed nothing it reads. Today, forced passes and edited days always
derive, and so does a day with a session still running.
A rescan triggered only by the quiet level now re-derives just the days
priced on a level that moved, instead of every day in the 21-day window,
finalized ones included.

This PR reduces database growth through byte-packed raw archive storage, shorter and configurable retention, and an idle-gated compact/VACUUM workflow, while speeding syncs by fingerprinting derivation inputs and skipping unchanged days plus narrowing baseline rescans; migrations, platform free-space bridges, UI, localization, indexing, and regression tests support the changes.

Avoid re-deriving unchanged historical days by persisting conservative input fingerprints and narrowing quiet-baseline rescans.
Hash each day's algorithm, profile, data edge, baseline history, source rows, and neighboring results.
Skip only fixed-point days; force derivation for edits, new data, version changes, or fingerprint failures.
Track unchanged-day counts and narrow quiet-only rescans to affected downstream dates.
Add coverage for skip equivalence and invalidation triggers.

This change converts raw archive storage, adds fingerprint-based derivation skipping and targeted rescans, and introduces controls for raw-reading retention and database compaction.
Changes: Storage and Derivation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Raw archive conversion and compatibility lib/data/db.dart, lib/data/recent_slice.dart, lib/coach/coach_db.dart, lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
Raw archive data moves to a hash-keyed store with a compatibility view and resumable migration. Archive replay, thinning, backup merging, recent slices, and housekeeping handle the converted store.
Derivation fingerprints and rescans lib/data/db.dart, lib/data/recent_slice.dart, lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
The database stores derivation input fingerprints and imported-day indexing. Derivation runs can skip unchanged days, while quiet-HRR changes can narrow eligible baseline rescans.
The archive policy offers 30-day, 90-day, 365-day, and forever choices. The profile screen displays and changes the policy, with confirmation before shortening retention.
Compaction prunes eligible data and vacuums only when free space is known to meet the threshold and no busy operation has started. The profile screen reports progress and outcomes.

Existing installs with no stored retention setting would silently lose raw readings older than 90 days, with no confirmation. Resolve that default before merging. The quiet-rescan narrowing needs a check that it cannot leave stale scores. The migration window can cause a brief derive skip that recovers on a later pass.

In the commitSyncBatch drain path, the new rawArchiveRow(...) call is constructed and passed to batch.insert, but the ++ops counter increment and the flushChunk() call happen BEFORE the insert is added to the batch. The old code had the same structure, but now the insert itself is inside the loop body while ++ops >= chunkOps fires before the row is enqueued. Concretely: the batch insert for each archive record is added after the if (++ops >= chunkOps) await flushChunk() guard, meaning the ops counter ticks and a flush can fire before the row lands in the batch. This is the SAFE-TRIM INVARIANT path — archive rows must commit in the same transaction as the decoded rows before the ACK. A flush triggered by the counter before the insert is added could split the archive row into a later transaction, violating commit-before-ACK for that frame.
ops =0;
}
// SAFE-TRIM INVARIANT: archive the undecodable records in the SAME// transaction as the raw records + trim cursor, so they are durably set// aside BEFORE the caller writes the batch-ACK that lets the band trim.if (archives !=null) {

_ensureRawArchiveStore is called from _repairOpenSchema (the every-open repair path) and from onCreate. The "both tables present" branch executes INSERT OR IGNORE INTO raw_archive_legacy ... SELECT ... FROM raw_archive — a full table copy — synchronously inside openDatabase, which runs under iOS's CPU watchdog (invariant 11). On a device where both tables exist (the hand-assembled case the comment describes), this could be an unbounded INSERT that kills the open under the watchdog. The comment says "only reachable if a file was hand-assembled with both", but a crash between the DROP and the rename in a previous open could also produce this state.

_dayInputFingerprint calls LocalDb.finalizedDayIds(kAlgoVersion) on every invocation inside the per-day worker loop. finalizedDayIds now calls _ensureDayResultImportedFlag, which on a database that has not yet backfilled the imported column runs a paged UPDATE loop (up to hundreds of rows, each its own statement) synchronously on whatever isolate calls it. The per-day fingerprint is computed inside processDay, which runs inside runWithConcurrency on the UI isolate (the derivation engine's run is not wrapped in Isolate.run for the light path). This is unbounded synchronous-ish DB work on the UI isolate, violating invariant 10, and it fires on every pending day on every light pass until the backfill completes.

The condition if (done > 0 || unchanged > 0) runs _refreshBaselines, _runCrossDay, and _runNotifications. But _quietLevelRepass can increment done independently after the per-day loop. If done == 0 (no days derived in the main loop) and unchanged > 0, the cross-day rollup and notifications fire. However, if done == 0 AND unchanged == 0 (nothing targeted at all), they are skipped — which is correct. The subtle issue is that unchanged days were skipped precisely because their inputs did not change, yet the cross-day rollup and notifications still run for them. This is intentional per the comment, but the _quietLevelRepass result is added to done AFTER this block, so a pass where only the quiet repass derived days (done from repass > 0, main loop done == 0, unchanged == 0) skips the cross-day rollup entirely. This is a pre-existing shape but the new condition makes it more reachable.
dayInputSignature queries raw_archive for the wearable device's rows using TOTAL(LENGTH(hex)) as part of the fingerprint. During migrateLegacyRawArchive, the raw_archive view UNIONs both raw_archive_frames and raw_archive_legacy. As rows move from legacy to frames, TOTAL(LENGTH(hex)) changes: the frames table stores hex as NULL (with frame as BLOB), so LENGTH(hex) is NULL for migrated rows, while legacy rows still have the full hex text. This means the fingerprint value for the wearable archive changes on every migration page even when no new data arrived, causing unnecessary re-derives of every day that has a wearable device throughout the entire migration period (potentially days to weeks on a large archive).
awaitadd(
'wearable_archive',
'SELECT COUNT(*), MAX(captured_at), TOTAL(captured_at), ''TOTAL(LENGTH(hex)) FROM raw_archive WHERE device_id = ?',
[wearableDeviceId],

**Changed inputs leave stale scores**
When derivation inputs change without changing the selected aggregates, or an input such as an observation or session sensor reading is omitted from the signature, `dayInputSignature` and `_dayInputFingerprint` then produce a matching fingerprint, so `processDay` skips derivation and leaves the caller with results based on old inputs.

**Compaction stalls active work**
When a sync or live session starts after the initial checks while compaction waits for a derive pass, `compactDatabase` proceeds through `compactStorage` to `VACUUM` without rechecking or coordinating with the new work; the database write lock makes its SQLite writes wait and stalls sync progress.
Coordinate compaction with sync and live-session state through `VACUUM`, refusing or delaying compaction if either becomes active while it waits.

**Distinct frames are silently discarded**
When a malicious paired wearable sends two distinct canonical-hex archive frames for the same device with a colliding SHA-1 digest, `rawArchiveRow` hashes the frame with collision-broken SHA-1, and the unique `(device_id, hash)` constraint with `ConflictAlgorithm.ignore` treats a distinct colliding frame as a duplicate; the sync can then ACK and trim it, losing a frame needed by a future decoder.
Use a collision-resistant digest and verify stored frame content on conflicts so distinct frames cannot be silently deduplicated.

**Quiet rescan cursor can lag**
When a quiet-only rescan updates scores and its signature, but the quiet-entry cursor write fails or is interrupted; a later quiet-level change returns a date to the cursor's older value, `rescanRecent` saves `baseline_sig` before `_storeQuietEntries`. If storing the quiet entries fails or the process stops between those writes, the next rescan sees the new signature and returns early, leaving the quiet cursor stale. A later quiet-level change that returns an entry to its stale value is then missed by `changedQuietDates`, so days retain scores from the intervening level.
Persist the baseline signature and quiet-entry snapshot atomically, or save the quiet-entry snapshot before advancing the signature so an interrupted update is retried.

Sourcery assessment
Needs a human reviewer. 4 findings to address first, and changing the default archive window from a year to 90 days makes older archived readings eligible for permanent deletion, and shortening the raw-data hold also removes inputs needed for future re-scoring. Reverting the code cannot restore deleted readings; the new default is the retention decision for installs that have no saved choice.

🟡 Medium · Distinct frames are silently discarded
When a malicious paired wearable sends two distinct canonical-hex archive frames for the same device with a colliding SHA-1 digest, rawArchiveRow hashes the frame with collision-broken SHA-1, and the unique (device_id, hash) constraint with ConflictAlgorithm.ignore treats a distinct colliding frame as a duplicate; the sync can then ACK and trim it, losing a frame needed by a future decoder.
Use a collision-resistant digest and verify stored frame content on conflicts so distinct frames cannot be silently deduplicated.

🟡 Medium · Quiet rescan cursor can lag
When a quiet-only rescan updates scores and its signature, but the quiet-entry cursor write fails or is interrupted; a later quiet-level change returns a date to the cursor's older value, rescanRecent saves baseline_sig before _storeQuietEntries. If storing the quiet entries fails or the process stops between those writes, the next rescan sees the new signature and returns early, leaving the quiet cursor stale. A later quiet-level change that returns an entry to its stale value is then missed by changedQuietDates, so days retain scores from the intervening level.
Persist the baseline signature and quiet-entry snapshot atomically, or save the quiet-entry snapshot before advancing the signature so an interrupted update is retried.

… sync before vacuum
a kill between the two rescan cursor writes left a fresh signature over a
stale quiet snapshot, so the next quiet-only rescan narrowed against the
wrong levels. the compaction also only checked for a running sync before
the prune; one that started meanwhile then waited out the whole vacuum.

Require proof that non-quiet baseline inputs are unchanged before narrowing.
The non-quiet signature records rounded medians, not every history value. If an RHR history value changes without moving its median and a quiet level changes in the same interval, this condition treats the change as quiet-only. The narrowed rescan can omit finalized days whose RHR baseline changed, then advance baseline_sig without updating their scores. Compare the underlying non-quiet history before narrowing, or retain the full rescan when that comparison is unavailable. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Wrap the rename and the index drop in one transaction.
The rename and the DROP INDEX run as separate autocommit statements. A crash between them leaves raw_archive_frames without its captured_at index until the legacy table is dropped. Queries on captured_at then scan the table. Results and stored data are unaffected.
The if block is skipped on the next open. CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS idx_raw_archive_captured on raw_archive_frames then does nothing, because the renamed legacy table still holds that index name. migrateLegacyRawArchive drops raw_archive_legacy once it is empty. The next open after that recreates the index.
Put the rename and the DROP INDEX statements inside one transaction. SQLite supports transactional DDL, so the two steps commit together.

Recreate the raw_archive view in the same transaction that drops the legacy table.
The transaction drops the raw_archive view, its triggers, and raw_archive_legacy. It commits. Only then does _ensureRawArchiveView recreate the view, outside the transaction.
Between these two steps, no raw_archive object exists. A reader in another isolate gets no such table: raw_archive. Examples are ultrahuman_inputs.dart and colmi_inputs.dart, which query raw_archive directly. A derive that throws in this window can end as a skipped day.
A crash between the steps self-heals on the next open. A concurrent reader in the same process does not.
Make _ensureRawArchiveView accept a DatabaseExecutor. Call it inside the transaction after the DROP TABLE. The helper then sees no legacy table, so it builds the view over the frame table alone.

Preserve the previous retention window for existing archives.
If an existing installation has archive buckets but no policy row, readPolicy now selects 90 days instead of the previous 365 days. The next derivation housekeeping pass evicts buckets older than 90 days without the shortening confirmation shown in the profile. Those raw readings cannot be recovered from the remaining scores. Preserve the 365-day implicit policy for existing archives, and initialize 90 days only for new installations. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

On a WHOOP MG the database grew by about 115 MB a day (#609), and every sync spent ages re-scoring days even when nothing new had come in.

Description
Idle syncs skip re-deriving days whose inputs haven't changed, cutting a 15-second idle pass to under a second
Raw archive storage halved: frames stored once as bytes (SHA-1 keyed) instead of twice as hex text; existing archives migrate in background pages
New "Storage" section in data settings: configurable raw-reading retention (30 days / 90 days / 1 year / forever, default changed from 365 to 90) and a "Compact database" button that prunes, VACUUMs, and reports freed space
finalizedDayIdsnow reads an indexedimportedcolumn instead of LIKE-scanning every finalized bundle; quiet-level rescans narrowed to only the days a changed level can reachDiagram Walkthrough
