fix(ai-client): show server-only tool approvals as server-tool-approval - #1967
An MCP tool gated with needsApproval reached useChat as a generic interrupt, so the approval UI from the docs never rendered and the run stayed paused. This PR adds a new interrupt kind, server-tool-approval, for approvals of tools that only the server knows. It also sends the tool's JSON Schema with the approval, so the UI can label the arguments. Typed tool-approval items do not change.
🎯 Changes
@tanstack/ai-client: hydrateInterrupt keeps a server-only, payloadless tool approval as an approval and publishes it as kind: 'server-tool-approval' (toolName: string, toolCallId, originalArgs: unknown). New exported type ServerToolApprovalInterrupt.
@tanstack/ai: the approval interrupt's metadata now carries inputSchema, the tool's JSON Schema (the same one inputSchemaHash hashes). The client exposes it as interrupt.inputSchema only when it hashes to the binding's inputSchemaHash, so a wrong or tampered schema is never shown.
When a client tool with the same name exists, the schema hash checks are the same as before. A server tool with an approvalSchema still arrives as generic, because the client cannot build its payload.
E2E route api.mcp-policy-test.ts now forwards resume and parentRunId. Before, a resumed run paused again.
Docs: mcp-advanced had a wrong claim ("approves the same way as any other tool"). It now shows the client code. tool-approval, interrupts/multiple, and the UI-kit pages describe the new kind.
Skills: ai-mcp and tool-calling mention the new kind.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.

🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. A tool that only the server knows (for example an MCP tool), gated with needsApproval, loses its approval UI on the client. The item arrives as generic. Cause. The tool-approval branch in hydrateInterrupt (packages/ai-client/src/interrupt-manager.ts) binds only when a client tool with the same name exists. With no client tool, the item falls through to generic. Fix. When no client tool has that name, the tool call ID matches, and the approval takes no payload, the item stays an approval. It is published as server-tool-approval, which is typed loosely because the client has no schema.
Possible alternatives
Reuse kind: 'tool-approval'. The docs UI would work with no change. Not taken: a toolName: string member in that union breaks narrowing on i.toolName === 'transfer' (tsc --strict fails with TS18046 on i.originalArgs).
Docs only. Document that MCP approvals arrive as generic. Not taken: the bug stays, and resolveInterrupts(true) still cannot approve all items at once.
Testing
Commands run
vitest packages/ai-client/tests/chat-client-interrupts.test.ts: 48 passed, including the schema check and a tamper test. The two new behavior tests fail on clean main (Received "kind": "generic").
Type tests (interrupts-types.test-d.ts) pass. They prove toolName === 'transfer' still types originalArgs.
vitest for @tanstack/ai chat, stream-processor, and interrupt tests: 425 passed.
pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e for mcp-approval, mcp-policy, and foreign-interrupt specs: all passed before the schema commit. After it, the dev server could not start because the machine was overloaded, so CI is the first run of the new inputSchema e2e check.
pnpm test:docs and kiira (1943 snippets): pass.
Not run: full pnpm test:pr. CI runs it.
Manual test
Run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e -- --grep "mcp approval" on main. The page does not exist there; on main the item would be generic.
Run the same command on this branch. The page shows a server-tool-approval item for the MCP tool.
Check that the page shows the tool's schema properties ("id").
The spec clicks Approve. Check that the tool runs and the model answers.
How this PR makes testing easy
New e2e page /mcp-approval and spec mcp-approval.spec.ts.
Unit tests drive a real chat() server interrupt and hydrate it with no client tools.
Low. Items that were generic for server-only payloadless approvals now arrive as server-tool-approval. Code that answered them through the generic branch must add a branch for the new kind. Revert the PR to undo.

New Features
Server-only tool approvals now appear in chat with the tool name and arguments for review. Approve or deny them individually or in bulk. When available, a verified input schema describes the arguments; approvals requiring a payload remain generic.
Added a public type for server-tool approval interrupts.
Documentation
Expanded guidance and examples for handling server-only tool approvals across supported UI frameworks and MCP workflows.
…roval
MCP tools gated with needsApproval have no client definition, so useChat
downgraded their approvals to generic interrupts and the approval UI never
rendered them. Payloadless approvals with no same-name client tool now hydrate
as a loosely typed server-tool-approval item.

Walkthrough
The client exposes qualifying approvals for server-only tools as resolvable server-tool-approval interrupts. The change includes schema verification, an MCP approval end-to-end flow, and updates to approval documentation and UI fallback descriptions.

Summary
Approval metadata and client hydration packages/ai/src/activities/chat/..., packages/ai-client/src/types.ts, packages/ai-client/src/index.ts, packages/ai-client/src/interrupt-manager.ts, packages/ai-client/tests/*
The server adds an available tool input schema to approval metadata. The client verifies the schema and exposes qualifying payloadless approvals without a matching client tool as server-tool-approval interrupts. Tests cover individual and bulk resolution, type narrowing, schema mismatch, and cases that remain generic.
MCP approval route and end-to-end flow testing/e2e/src/routes/mcp-approval.tsx, testing/e2e/src/routes/api.mcp-policy-test.ts, testing/e2e/src/routeTree.gen.ts, testing/e2e/tests/mcp-approval.spec.ts
The test route displays approval details and allows approval when the interrupt can be resolved. The API forwards resume parameters to chat(). The end-to-end test checks the interrupt details and resumed response.
Documentation describes server-only approval fields, resolution, generic fallback behavior, and MCP chat resumption. The changeset declares a minor release for @tanstack/ai-client and a patch release for @tanstack/ai; documentation dates are updated.

Explanation
Issue #1924 requires server-only MCP approvals to use kind: 'tool-approval', or requires a documented client-definition alternative. The implementation correctly preserves payloadless approvals, exposes toolName and originalArgs, keeps matching-client schema checks, and adds tests. Update the batch approval guidance around the `interrupt.kind` check to account

The server adds the tool's JSON Schema to the approval interrupt metadata.
The client exposes it as inputSchema only when it hashes to the binding's
inputSchemaHash, so a UI can label MCP tool arguments.
The assertion at line 24 checks only that the schema text contains "id". The MCP test server declares id as z.string(). A conversion change that typed id as a number would still pass this check, because the key name is unchanged. Assert the expected property schema, not only the key name.
