'@tanstack/virtual-core': patch

Measure the scroll viewport using client dimensions so borders and scrollbars do not obscure end-aligned items.

An optional function that if provided is called when the scrollElement changes and should implement the initial measurement and continuous monitoring of the scrollElement's `Rect` (an object with `width` and `height`). It's called with the instance (which also gives you access to the scrollElement via `instance.scrollElement`. Built-in implementations are exported as `observeElementRect` and `observeWindowRect` which are automatically configured for you by your framework adapter's exported functions like `useVirtualizer` or `useWindowVirtualizer`.

The built-in `observeElementRect` measures the visible client area (`clientWidth` and `clientHeight`), excluding borders and scrollbars. Custom implementations should report the same viewport dimensions.

Also observe changes to the viewport padding.

If a scroll element has a fixed content-box width and its padding decreases, clientWidth decreases but this content-box observation does not fire. scrollRect remains too wide, so end alignment can leave an item cropped. Observe both the content box and border box, and continue reading getRect in either callback. The two boxes require separate ResizeObserver instances. (w3.org)

Review comment at @packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts at line 154:
Update the observer setup around `observer.observe(element, { box: 'content-box'
})` to observe both the content box and border box using separate
`ResizeObserver` instances; have both callbacks read the element’s rectangle
through `getRect` and update `scrollRect` so viewport padding changes are
reflected.

Padding-only changes on a content-box-sized scroll container are rare, and the scrollbar toggle is the common case, which is covered. I’m fine keeping one observer here; we can add a second border-box observer in a follow-up if someone hits it.

@piecyk Thanks for the guidance. Keeping one content-box observer is reasonable for this PR. The padding-only case can remain deferred until someone reports it.

Would you like a follow-up issue, or leave it deferred without one?

Learning: In TanStack/virtual, the client-sized viewport change in packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts intentionally keeps one content-box ResizeObserver in observeElementRect. The maintainer prefers to defer a second border-box observer for padding-only changes on content-box-sized scroll containers until a user reports that case.
