feat: Updated editor body colors (BLO-1232) (BLO-1240) (BLO-1331) - #3206
This PR updates editor body colors (UI elements like menus and toolbars are out of scope) to hit WCAG 2.0 AA contrast requirements and converts their CSS variables to use the OKLCH color space instead of RGB. OKLCH is a polar color space similar to HSL, but has 2 key advantages:
It supports wide color gamuts. Computer displays can't reproduce all colors that the human eye can see, and the color gamut that a display is capable of showing varies. This means that the same HSL color can end up looking washed out on one display and oversaturated on another, unless they're calibrated to the same gamut. OKLCH uses arbitrary values for its equivalent saturation and lightness rather than being mapped directly to display pixel values, so colors look much more consistent across different displays.
It takes into account human perception of color and contrast. In HSL, a gradient created by sweeping across all hue values will have noticeable darker and lighter bands as some colors appear brighter or darker to us at the same luminance level. OKLCH accounts for this, so sweeping the hue results in a much smoother gradient.
The second advantage is useful to us as it makes it much easier to ensure each highlight color has the same relative saturation and brightness. With HSL/RGB, it takes a lot of trial and error to do this.
The new color palette targets the P3 gamut. While not all modern displays have good coverage of P3 (sRGB is standard for most web content, P3 is typically used for consumer HDR content), this is a deliberate decision as it allows us to increase the vibrancy of highlight colors with a small tradeoff to consistency for displays which don't support P3. If we target sRGB, colors end up looking overly washed out, even if they will be more consistent across devices.
While the most significant changes have been made to highlight colors, the following colors have been adjusted too to hit the contrast requirements:
Dark mode quote block text
Dark mode add file button text
Toggle block "add block" button text
Verified that axe scans from out a11y tests no longer report contrast issues. An important thing to note is that placeholder contrast is currently untested and so placeholder colors have not been updated as part of this PR, only colors which have been caught to not pass WCAG contrast requirements when running an axe scan of the editor body. See #3205 for more info.
There's a temporary highlight-color-comparison.html file to inspect the old vs new highlight colors (to be removed before merging). The screenshots below are taken from it.

Walkthrough
The PR updates light and dark editor color values and uses theme variables with fallback colors in block styles. It adds a playground example that compares block and inline color combinations across themes. The versioning test now clears persisted toggle state before the test and during teardown.
Changes: Theme palette and example
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Theme palette and editor styles packages/react/src/editor/styles.css, packages/core/src/editor/defaultColors.ts, packages/core/src/editor/Block.css, packages/xl-typst-exporter/src/typstExporter.test.ts
Light and dark theme variables and default palette values change. Block styles use theme variables with fallback colors for selections, editor elements, color mappings, and suggestion marks. The exporter test expects the updated default red value.
Color-combinations example and playground wiring examples/04-theming/08-color-combinations/*, playground/src/examples.gen.tsx
The example renders block and inline color combinations in separate editors and toggles between light and dark themes. Its page, package configuration, documentation, and playground entry are added.

Summary
Reset persisted toggle state tests/src/end-to-end/versioning/block-comparison.test.tsx
The test clears persisted toggle-added and toggle-removed entries before its body and during teardown.
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#2852: The PR changes default palette values, but does not add the optional custom-color accessibility warning described in the issue.
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#2827: The PR changes text and highlight palette values, but does not add a table-specific contrast check.
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#3043: The PR changes the green palette values, but does not confirm the specific green requested in the issue.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 09be7
The palette update has a bounded compatibility risk: browsers without color-mix() lose node-selection highlights. Add fallback colors or explicitly accept that limitation before release.

Explanation
The title names the main change: editor body colors were updated. The changeset updates highlight and text colors in Block.css, styles.css, and defaultColors.ts, and adds a color-combinations example. The title also includes the ticket references (BLO-1232, BLO-1240, BLO-1331). The title uses a 'feat:' prefix and is 65 characters long. It is specific and fits the changeset, so it passes.

Explanation
The description follows the template sections: Summary, Rationale, Changes, Impact, Testing, Screenshots/Video, Checklist, and Additional Notes. The Summary explains the WCAG 2.0 AA contrast goal and the move from RGB to OKLCH. Rationale, Changes, Impact, and Testing are filled in, and screenshots are attached. Some gaps remain. The Rationale, Changes, and Impact sections are brief. The Testing section covers only the axe-core scan and does not describe manual testing. The Checklist marks unit tests and documentation as not done. The Summary also mentions a temporary highlight-color-comparison.html file that must be removed before merge. The template placeholder comments remain in several sections. The description is mostly complete, so it passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2852], [#2827], and [#3043] are open, directly linked issues, so their coding requirements apply.
[#2852] and [#2827]: The PR changes the light and dark .bn-root color variables and the highlight palette in packages/react/src/editor/styles.css to OKLCH values. It also changes COLORS_DEFAULT and COLORS_DARK_MODE_DEFAULT in packages/core/src/editor/defaultColors.ts. The new examples/04-theming/08-color-combinations example renders every default text and background pair in both themes. The PR reports 0 of 100 combinations below 4.5:1 in both themes. The issue allows adjusting failing swatches, so restricting the palette by adjustment is acceptable. The typstExporter.test.ts expectation for red text changed to match the new palette. The issue does not require a free-form color picker or a custom-color warning, so those are not required here.
[#3043]: The green highlight values are changed in the same palette update, so the green text and background pair is covered by the 0-of-100 result. The PR does not show a separate reason for green to be recognizable without a background. The whole-PR summary does not contain enough detail to confirm that visual requirement separately, but the issue's stated contrast requirement is met.
No required coding requirement is unmet in the evidence available. Placeholder colors are excluded from the PR, and the issue does not require them.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR summary (mergeBase to currentHead) still lists changes with no demonstrated connection to [#2852], [#2827], or [#3043]:
tests/src/end-to-end/versioning/block-comparison.test.tsx (+12/-8) changes persisted toggle-removed-* and toggle-added-* state handling. This concerns versioning toggle state, not color contrast.
packages/core/src/editor/Block.css (+141/-70) changes code-preview, file-block, column, thread, and suggestion styling. The PR scopes its color work to the editor body. Thread and suggestion styling are not editor body text or highlight colors in the linked issues. Only the highlight and text/background color changes are connected to the objectives.
The color-combinations example, its package, configuration, README, and playground registration support the linked objectives. The typstExporter.test.ts expectation update follows from the palette change. These are in scope.
I have no read-only repository tools in this review. I could not confirm whether these changes were removed after the previous review. The whole-PR summary still lists them, so the prior conclusion stands.
Resolution
Remove the unrelated block-comparison.test.tsx cleanup changes. Remove the Block.css changes that do not affect the editor body text or highlight colors, including code-preview, file-block, column, thread, and suggestion styling. Keep the palette-related Block.css changes only where they apply the new text and background variables to editor body content. Move unrelated changes to separate pull requests.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Add a doctype before <html>.
When the standalone example opens, the missing doctype puts the document in quirks mode. That makes the visual comparison use legacy rendering rules. Add <!doctype html> to the generating template and regenerate this file. (html.spec.whatwg.org)

Add fallback declarations for the selection fill and outline.
Browsers without color-mix() treat each color-mix() declaration as invalid and drop it. Safari 15.4–16.1 supports oklch() but not color-mix(). In those versions, the selection fill and outline are not painted. Add a literal fallback before each color-mix() declaration. Apply the same change to the other selection rules that now use color-mix().
IMPORTANT
Carefully review the code before committing. Ensure that it accurately replaces the highlighted code, contains no missing lines, and has no issues with indentation. Thoroughly test & benchmark the code to ensure it meets the requirements.

@matthewlipski let's check the snapshots here, merge in origin/main and check that the images are in the state that we want them. for example one of them had a selection highlight in the new version but the old version did not have a selection highlight so it makes me wonder if there was a timing issue there in the test
