After a drag-handle menu action: closing the menu could leave focus outside the editor, preventing immediate keyboard undo.
After undoing a drop: the editor could remain focused but appear unfocused. History restored a NodeSelection, whose visible property is false, hiding the native selection without a matching visible outer-block highlight. This was a selection-visibility issue, not undo causing DOM blur.
The side menu could remain at the old drag position, and the formatting toolbar could appear for restored whole-block selections.
Changes and resulting behavior
Restore destination focus and a cursor at the end of dropped content, including custom toggle/column drops and drops across editor roots. A deferred fallback handles drops whose destination does not receive the source's dragend; pending finalization is cleaned up on cancellation/unmount.
Preserve the public blockDragEnd() API for repeat-safe drag-preview/state cleanup and stale-menu dismissal, without blurring or refocusing the editor. Existing React/custom-menu integrations remain compatible.
Restore editor focus when a side-menu menu closes with focus lost or still in that menu. Do not steal focus from other inputs, including other editor UI. Resolve active focus through the editor's own document/root.
Use MultipleNodeSelection for both single- and multi-block drags. Custom bookmarks preserve the selection type through undo/redo, map edits consistently, and fall back safely when the selected range becomes invalid. JSON deserialization is also supported.
Keep the formatting toolbar hidden for whole-block selections while retaining ordinary text-selection behavior.
Make both column-drop mutation paths atomic and place the cursor at the dropped content, so one undo restores the move and typing targets the dropped blocks.
The historical Firefox blur/refocus workaround for native caret painting is retained. It is distinct from hidden node selections.
Verification
Targeted unit and Docker browser tests cover:
Bookmark mapping, deletion/structural fallback, JSON round-trips, and undo/redo identity.
Keyboard undo and visible native selections after paragraph, image, toggle, and multi-block drops.
Side-menu cleanup/no-blur/repeat-safety, iframe focus, and preserving focus in other inputs.
Destination finalization without a local dragend.
Immediate keyboard undo after a real drag-handle color-menu action.
Typing destination and one-step undo after column drops.
Manual checks
Drag a block, then immediately undo without clicking. Verify the move is undone, the block selection is visible, and the formatting toolbar stays hidden.
Repeat with an image, multiple blocks, and a drop into a toggle.
Change a block color from the drag-handle menu, then immediately undo. Also verify closing the menu does not steal focus from another input.
Drop a block into a new column and type. Verify typing goes into the dropped block; undo typing, then undo the move in one step.
Verify the side menu hides after a drop and follows the pointer again afterward.
In Firefox, perform a real native drag and verify the blinking caret and subsequent typing. Automated Firefox drag cases remain skipped because of existing simulation limitations.
Scope and remaining verification
This retains the existing drag-preview implementation and public drag-end integrations rather than restructuring them. Unifying all insertion paths is outside this PR.
Native Firefox drag/caret painting, actual cross-window dragging, and collaborative structural-history rebasing remain unverified; no regression in these areas has been demonstrated.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved drag-and-drop behavior: the text cursor now lands in the expected position after moving or dropping blocks, including in multi-column layouts.
The editor now retains or restores focus after a drag without taking focus from other inputs.
Undo and redo more reliably restore block selections and document order after dragging. Changes made immediately after a drop are now treated as a separate undo step.
The formatting toolbar no longer appears when whole blocks or multiple blocks are selected.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Drag-and-drop changes update block-selection history mapping, editor focus and cursor placement, and formatting-toolbar visibility. Multi-column drops now group block removal and column updates or replacement in one transaction, then close the history group.

Explanation
Both directly linked issues have coding requirements, and the reviewed changes address them. [#3165] Drop handling restores the destination cursor and editor focus, while blockDragEnd() no longer leaves the editor blurred. Side-menu close handling restores focus only when focus is lost or remains in the relevant menu or editor context. The drag-handle color-menu test verifies immediate keyboard undo. [#3197] Both multi-column drop paths group block removal and column updates in one transaction. The tests verify that one undo restores the original document and that typing targets the dropped block. Selection, focus, and history tests provide supporting coverage. Firefox native drag behavior remains unverified as stated in the PR, but this does not establish a coding requirement failure.

No unrelated product change is established by the supplied whole-PR summary. The stated exclusions for native Firefox drag behavior, cross-window dragging, and collaborative history rebasing do not add out-of-scope work.

Handle drops from another document at the target drop.
onDrop sets blocksDropped, but onRootDragEnd listens only on the target editor’s root. A block drag from an editor in another window dispatches dragend in the source document, so the target does not run the focus correction. The flag remains set, and a later unrelated target-root dragend can blur and refocus this editor.
Schedule the same correction from the target-side drop. Keep the root listener for same-document drags.

Looks good, no real issues as far as the code goes. The only quirk I found during testing is that while the editor stays focused after a drop, Cmd+Z undoes the drop but also blurs the editor. Not a huge issue, but would be nice to keep it focused.
…menu menus
A drag with the side menu handle left the editor without focus, so Ctrl-Z
and other keys did nothing until the user clicked into the editor again
(#3165). The same happened after a change from the drag handle menu, for
example a color change.
- The drop cursor extension now ends every block drop in the editor that
gets it: at `dragend` it blurs the editor (Firefox caret fix, #2128),
puts a text cursor at the end of the dropped blocks and focuses the
editor.
- The side menu ends its own drag at `dragend` on the document, so a
custom side menu needs no wiring. `blockDragEnd` is deprecated and does
nothing.
- Closing a side menu menu gives the focus back to the editor when the
focus is in the side menu or lost.
- A drop at a block's edge (new column) is now one transaction, so one
undo reverts it (#3197), and it leaves the cursor on the dropped blocks.
- `blockDragEnd` is removed. The side menu ends its drag by itself, at the
handle's `dragend`. Remove calls to it.
- The side menu hides at the end of a drag. Before, it stayed at the
dragged block's old place until the next pointer move.
- The formatting toolbar does not show when whole blocks are selected. A
block drag selects the dragged blocks, and undoing the drop selected them
again, which showed the toolbar.
BREAKING CHANGE: `SideMenuExtension.blockDragEnd` is removed.
…hadow roots
- The drop cursor clears its "blocks dropped" flag at each `dragstart`. A
drop from another document ends its drag there, without a `dragend` in
this one, so the flag could stay set until an unrelated later drag.
- `unfreezeMenu` reads the active element from the editor's root. In a
shadow root, the document's active element is the shadow host.
- The image drag test checks that the formatting toolbar is not in the
document. The query gave `null`, which the element matcher rejects.
Clarification following the focus/selection investigation: there are two distinct issues here, rather than one blur bug.
The original post-drop keyboard failure was genuine focus loss: the old blockDragEnd() explicitly called editor.blur() without restoring focus. Closing a drag-handle menu could also leave focus outside the editor. Those focus fixes are still needed.
The apparent blur after undo was different. In the reproduced case, the editor remained focused and no blur event occurred. History restored a NodeSelection, whose visible property is false; the native selection was hidden and the selected outer block did not receive a matching visible highlight. This made the editor appear unfocused without actually losing DOM focus.
The implementation now uses MultipleNodeSelection for both single- and multi-block drags, with history bookmarks so undo restores a visible whole-block selection. The public blockDragEnd() API is preserved for repeat-safe cleanup, without blurring the editor. Destination focus/cursor restoration, menu focus restoration, and atomic column-drop history address the separate interaction issues.
The historical Firefox blur/refocus caret workaround remains in place. Native Firefox drag/caret painting still needs manual verification; existing Firefox drag-test skips are not a newly observed regression.
The PR description is being updated to reflect this distinction and the smaller final changeset.

A normal typing transaction can merge with either multi-column drop transaction when the drop follows within ProseMirror’s default 500 ms history window. Both drop paths touch the dragged block’s changed range, so the history transaction is adjacent. The existing closeHistory call runs after the drop and cannot split an already-created history event.
One undo can therefore undo both the drop and the preceding typing instead of restoring the document immediately before the drop. The tests do not cover this case because they call closeHistory before the drop.

Closes #3165. Closes #3197.
Problems and root causes
There are separate focus, selection-visibility, and history issues:
blockDragEnd()explicitly blurred the editor without restoring focus, so keyboard shortcuts stopped working until refocus (Dragging not undoable with CTRL-Z (without additional click to focus the editor again) #3165).NodeSelection, whosevisibleproperty isfalse, hiding the native selection without a matching visible outer-block highlight. This was a selection-visibility issue, not undo causing DOM blur.Changes and resulting behavior
dragend; pending finalization is cleaned up on cancellation/unmount.blockDragEnd()API for repeat-safe drag-preview/state cleanup and stale-menu dismissal, without blurring or refocusing the editor. Existing React/custom-menu integrations remain compatible.MultipleNodeSelectionfor both single- and multi-block drags. Custom bookmarks preserve the selection type through undo/redo, map edits consistently, and fall back safely when the selected range becomes invalid. JSON deserialization is also supported. The historical Firefox blur/refocus workaround for native caret painting is retained. It is distinct from hidden node selections.
Verification
Targeted unit and Docker browser tests cover:
dragend.Manual checks
Scope and remaining verification
This retains the existing drag-preview implementation and public drag-end integrations rather than restructuring them. Unifying all insertion paths is outside this PR.
Native Firefox drag/caret painting, actual cross-window dragging, and collaborative structural-history rebasing remain unverified; no regression in these areas has been demonstrated.
