Avoid recompiling the Typst Rust/WASM compiler when an exact build is already available. The existing build command now tries verified local outputs, a shared per-user cache across worktrees, then a content-addressed GitHub Actions artifact before compiling from source.
Share one checkout-independent fingerprint across developer builds and CI: Rust sources, Cargo manifests/lockfile, pinned toolchain, resolved wasm-pack version, and build scripts.
Accept remote artifacts only from successful main-push runs of this repository's build workflow; verify hashes, checksums, and allowlisted ZIP entries before installing.
Publish separate 90-day WASM artifacts on main while preserving the full compiler artifact used by PDF e2e jobs.
Keep forced builds uncached, provide remote-download opt-out, and keep release publishing source-only with task caching disabled.
Serialize same-checkout builds and atomically publish shared-cache entries.
Real-output smoke test: a clean temporary second checkout with no wasm-pack executable restored the real compiler from the shared cache, verified all checksums, and initialized the WebAssembly module successfully.
Remaining production check
PR artifacts are intentionally not trusted or published as developer-download artifacts. The first end-to-end download of a real main-produced artifact must be checked after merge and a successful main workflow run. Authenticated download, trusted-producer checks, archive validation, and installation are covered locally with mocked HTTP responses and real ZIP files; this PR does not claim that the main-only production transfer has already been exercised.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Build Improvements
Typst builds now reuse matching local outputs, cached builds, or verified artifacts from successful main-branch builds before compiling from source.
Main-branch builds provide a separate WASM artifact matched to the compiler inputs.
Package publishing builds WASM from source without reusing cached outputs.
Build outputs are checked for integrity before reuse, and concurrent builds are serialized.
On supported Windows environments without Rust installed, builds provide installation guidance.
Documentation
Updated build guidance to cover output reuse, source-build options, and recovery steps.

Walkthrough
The Typst WASM build now fingerprints and validates outputs, reuses local and shared-cache results, and can retrieve matching artifacts from trusted main builds. When reuse is unavailable, it compiles from source. Build workflows, task configuration, tests, and documentation reflect these paths.

Summary
Fingerprint and validate WASM outputs packages/xl-typst-compiler/scripts/wasm-cache.mjs, packages/xl-typst-compiler/scripts/wasm-build.mjs, .github/actions/typst-cache/action.yml, packages/xl-typst-compiler/scripts/wasm-cache.test.mjs, packages/xl-typst-compiler/package.json
The cache utility hashes build inputs, writes manifests, validates output checksums, and stages files. The action exposes the fingerprint and uses it in the cache key. Tests cover input hashing and output validation.
Pushes to main upload a hash-named WASM artifact with a 90-day retention period. The upload fails if a specified output file is missing.
Reuse outputs before compiling packages/xl-typst-compiler/scripts/ensure-wasm.mjs, packages/xl-typst-compiler/scripts/wasm-cache.test.mjs, packages/xl-typst-compiler/vite.config.ts, .github/workflows/publish.yaml, packages/xl-typst-compiler/package.json, packages/xl-typst-compiler/README.md
The build entry point checks local output and shared cache, then tries artifact download before compiling. It serializes builds, checks inputs after compilation, and stores output unless source-only mode is active. Task configuration adds a forced WASM build task, and publishing uses source-only mode. Tests and documentation cover the build paths and controls.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review aacbb
The build reuses verified WASM outputs and falls back to compiling from source, so the main paths are safe. Three minor issues remain. A Ctrl+C or SIGTERM during a build can leave a stale lock that blocks the next build for 10 minutes. The documented cache and download environment controls may not reach the cached build task. A failed fingerprint command in CI can silently produce an empty cache key. None of these is a merge blocker, but each should be followed up.

Remove the build lock when the process receives SIGINT or SIGTERM.
A developer who presses Ctrl+C during a long Rust compile triggers this. Node's default signal action ends the process without running finally. The directory node_modules/.typst-wasm.lock stays. The next build polls every 250 ms for 10 minutes and then fails. The developer must remove the lock manually.
Install signal handlers after the lock is acquired. A handler stops Node from ending the process at once. The pending execFileSync then returns, and finally runs. The exit hook covers the process.exit path.
SIGKILL still leaves the lock. The README already documents that case.

Real pre-merge cold-cache cycle verified against CI run 40641752104, commit 245e2f54328eb7eb12d02de0defd3f9a92549572:
Temporarily enabled the exact content-addressed artifact upload for this same-repository PR only. The compiler producer job succeeded and uploaded artifact 12795957274 (typst-wasm-v3-9eaec770aba385d55be1d94a6c917452fe3bef6129d4b493a36026ee177896f6, 8,971,188 compressed bytes).
Used a disposable checkout with no pkg/, no shared cache, no wasm-pack executable, and no Cargo on PATH. Only its trustedRun implementation was replaced with an exact run-ID/commit/repository/workflow allowlist; production source and its main-only trust policy were unchanged.
The real ensure-wasm path queried GitHub, followed the signed storage redirect without forwarding the GitHub token, validated/extracted the archive, and populated both caches in 4.4 seconds. No HTTP responses or artifact bytes were mocked.
Initialized the downloaded WASM and compiled a valid 7,781-byte PDF with a real font.
Removed the disposable checkout output and successfully restored it again from the newly populated shared cache with downloads disabled.
Separately confirmed the unmodified production trust predicate rejects this real PR run. All 46 package tests pass, including trust-policy coverage. Successful main-run acceptance still needs its post-merge smoke test.
The temporary workflow exception has been removed in b1169e04eb; workflow contents are identical to their pre-experiment state. No production trust bypass or test override is being shipped.
Implemented speculative download in aacbb797e1: after finding one exact-hash candidate, producer metadata verification and the signed-URL/archive download run concurrently. An untrusted or unavailable producer cancels/discards its download. Extraction/publication remains gated on trust plus existing archive/checksum validation; credentials are still stripped for storage. Candidates are processed one at a time.
Real cold-cache benchmark (three alternating sequential/parallel pairs, each using a new isolated checkout and empty shared cache, no compiler executable):
Version
Cold restore times
Average
Previous sequential
4.887s, 4.649s, 4.716s
4.751s
Parallel
4.196s, 4.184s, 4.231s
4.204s
About 0.55s / 12% faster in this small local sample. Network tracing confirms trust and signed-URL requests start concurrently (e.g. both at 355ms in the final run). Each of the six real downloads passed checksum validation, WASM initialization, compilation of a 7,781-byte PDF, and a subsequent offline shared-cache restore. The download uses the already-published artifact from run 40641752104: compilation inputs/hash are unchanged by this transport-only edit, so no workflow publication exception needed to be reintroduced. Only the disposable test copy pins acceptance to that exact PR run/commit; production main-only trust remains unchanged.
Regression tests were run red against the sequential implementation, then green after the change: download starts while trust is pending, existing output remains untouched, and trust rejection aborts the in-flight download. 48 package tests, focused lint/format, and the uncached package build pass.
Final readiness review: fixed fingerprint failure propagation (separate assignment before GITHUB_OUTPUT) and explicitly tracked/passed BLOCKNOTE_TYPST_CACHE_DIR, BLOCKNOTE_TYPST_DOWNLOAD, BLOCKNOTE_TYPST_SOURCE_ONLY, and XDG_CACHE_HOME through the cached Vite task. Verified red/green with the actual cached task and a disposable Node preload probe: all four controls were absent before and present afterward. Also verified bash -e returns success with the old nested echo despite a failed hash command, but returns the hash command failure with the new assignment. Uncached release execution already forwards these variables; it remains source-only. All 48 package tests, focused lint, format, regular build, and commit checks pass. Keeping the documented explicit stale-lock recovery rather than expanding process/signal lifecycle behavior in this PR. Waiting for checks on 21f8947 before squash merge.
