# NXbox (Nintendo Switch) Guide

NXbox is a Nintendo Switch emulator for Xbox Series X in Developer Mode, built on [Eden](https://git.eden-emu.dev/eden-emu/eden). It has its own Direct3D 12 renderer, a console-style game library, one-button mods from GameBanana, cheats, and it updates itself from its GitHub releases. *It is a beta: no game is fully playable without bugs yet.*

**Developed by:** NSPX ([NspxMiguel/NXbox](https://github.com/NspxMiguel/NXbox))

## Prerequisites

* **Xbox Series X in Developer Mode**, with the Device Portal reachable from your PC.
* **Your own keys:** `prod.keys` and `title.keys` dumped from your Switch.
* **Your own games** as `.nsp`, `.nsz` or `.xci`. Some games (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for example) also need firmware dumped from your console.

## Install

1. **Set new apps to install as games.** In the Device Portal settings, turn on `DefaultUWPContentTypeToGame` *before* installing. NXbox needs the 5 GB a game gets; as an app it is limited to 1 GB.
2. **Download** the `.appx` from the [latest release](https://github.com/NspxMiguel/NXbox/releases/latest).
3. **Install it:** Device Portal - **My games & apps** - **Add**, choose the `.appx`, then **Start**.
4. If you installed it before step 1, open Dev Home, select NXbox - **View details**, and set **App type** to **Game**.

## Add keys and games

1. Launch NXbox once so it creates its folders, then close it.
2. In the Device Portal **File explorer**, open `LocalAppData` - the NXbox package - `LocalState`.
3. Upload `prod.keys` and `title.keys` to `LocalState\eden\keys`.
4. Upload games to `LocalState\games`. Internal developer storage is small, so for big games use a USB drive with an `NXbox\games` folder instead.
5. Optional: put firmware files in `LocalState\firmware`.
6. Launch NXbox and pick the game in the library.

## Tips

* **Renderer:** the native Direct3D 12 renderer is the default. To use the older OpenGL path, add the line `renderer_backend=0` to `LocalState\eden_settings.txt`.
* **One game as its own app:** [NXbox Pack](https://github.com/NspxMiguel/NXbox/tree/main/tools/nxbox-pack) (Windows, macOS, Linux) turns a game you own into its own Xbox app that boots straight into it.
* **Updates:** NXbox checks its GitHub releases and updates itself.
* **Crash reports:** attach `LocalState\nxbox_crash.txt` when you [open an issue](https://github.com/NspxMiguel/NXbox/issues).

The full compatibility table is in the [NXbox README](https://github.com/NspxMiguel/NXbox#compatibility).
