Brings the experimental AdCP 3.3 agent identity (#1502) up to the final spec decisions (adcp#8162, #8168, #8169, #8170, after Konstantin Mirin's review) and to the merged Go (adcp-go#557/#558) and TypeScript (adcp-client#3244–#3271) SDKs. It follows the 2026-10-15 correction on #1502, which withdrew the earlier outage guidance. docs/agent-identity-3-3-migration.md is rewritten to match.

A. Spec decisions

  • Signature path (DR-0023). WBA statuses and headers only: 400, 403 with Accept-Signature, 403 without it for a revoked key, 429 for a reused nonce or capacity. Every cause gets the same generic AUTH_INVALID body. The verifier never answers SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE. A seller without WBA enabled answers 403 with no challenge.

  • Key-directory discovery failures (network, any non-200, invalid directory) never evict a cached directory. Its keys keep verifying for up to max_stale_seconds (24 h, never past the signatures' expiry). A key missing from a stale copy is a discovery failure. With nothing cached the request is unverified: 403 with Accept-Signature by default, or wba_discovery_failure="anonymous", which still refuses operations in required_for.

  • Revocation in the authorization layer. OriginRevocationChecker.status() reports revoked / current / no_list / stale / unavailable, and check_wba_revocation records the result in VerifiedSigner.revocation.

    • Revoked: 403 with no Accept-Signature.
    • No list (404/410): identity-established and not bindable.
    • Stale: spend fails with SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE.
    • Replay or revocation store failure: an application-level 503.
    • verify_wba_request needs only the directory and the replay store.
  • Trust records.

    • The last record read stays authoritative, and an empty agents[] retires an agent.
    • A 404/410 or an invalid record after a read is an outage, not a removal.
    • Spend during an outage gets SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE. Non-spend continues for outage_continuation_seconds (default 4× polling; 0 disables).
    • A grantor that once served a 200 never falls back to brand.json, and its outage is never grant_absent.
  • Delisted bound origin. It falls back to identity-established: anonymous-equivalent plus get_principal, with no poll/cancel exception (that machinery is removed). The binding is kept, so RFC 9421 stays refused, and bind refuses while the origin is unlisted.

  • Errors split by layer. Outside unbound_for, an unbound caller is served exactly as anonymous. In required_for, an unbound or delisted caller gets PERMISSION_DENIED with no details. A missing grant gets grant_absent. A spend outage gets SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE.

  • Grants (L2).

    • Grants come from the house record via resolve_house (the BrandHouse result carries the house's child-brand id).
    • Domains are compared as registrable domains, the grantee included.
    • Covers the self-operated brand, narrowing that ends the chain, and the valid_from/valid_until intersection.
    • The grant gate keeps no claim history of its own.
  • Schemas. Pinned from the latest spec branches, with provenance in UPSTREAM.json.

    • pending_approval, and relationship only when served at 3.3 or later.
    • profiles.adcp.onboarding in trust.json only, with one mode enum.
    • agent_identity and documentation_url removed; verified_specialisms.
  • Authorization seam (Build Web Bot Auth on http-message-signatures instead of a hand-written RFC 9421 layer #1511). The middleware verifies, checks replay and revocation, and renders statuses, then calls one injected WbaAuthorizer (adcp.server.wba_authorization). Bindings, trust records and spend classification live in the default OriginBindingGate, as in Go; wba_authorizer= replaces it.

B. Interop (Cloudflare web-bot-auth@0.2.0)

  • The signer sends 64-byte nonces by default (Cloudflare's verifier requires them). The verifier accepts any 22–256 character nonce, because 64 bytes is only RECOMMENDED (architecture draft §4.2.2) and httpsig-02 adds no requirement. Caller-supplied signer nonces may use the same range.
  • @target-uri is the URI as received, built from raw_path (tested with /a%7Eb/mcp/). @authority is normalized per RFC 9421 §2.2.3. The canonical origin is used only for Signature-Agent.
  • Plain JWKS directories are accepted by default. Keys are found by thumbprint, kid is optional, and require_signed_directories=True is available. In a signed directory, only keys with a verified signature are indexed.
  • RSA-PSS-SHA512, including the draft's Appendix E.1.1 vector.
  • tests/conformance/vectors/wba-interop/ vendors adcp-client@577f21e8 with SHA-256 provenance. Python verifies both the Cloudflare-signed and the adcp-client-signed requests and directories (tests/conformance/signing/test_wba_interop.py).

C. Hardening

  • Trust host budgets.
    • Own hosts are budgeted per (owner, host).
    • Foreign authoritative_location hops share a separate global per-host budget (16) and never draw on the victim's budget.
    • Content errors never trigger a cool-down, and capacity refusals are not cached.
  • History floods.
    • quota_key makes quotas PSL PRIVATE-aware (*.vercel.app counts as one group). It applies to trust history (64 per group), concurrent directory discoveries and revocation facts.
    • Revocation list state is now an LRU cache, with revoked facts kept separately, so a flood cannot lock new buyers out.
    • The guide notes that authority and revocation history are in memory, with no durable seam yet.
  • Revocation: a stale first list is refused but still revokes what it lists. Revocations are never withdrawn.
  • Directory edge cases:
    • A fetcher that throws synchronously cannot poison the cache.
    • Directory signatures must cover the exact identifiers "@authority";req and "content-digest".
    • A replay at exactly expires+skew is rejected, for WBA and RFC 9421 alike.
    • A UTF-8 BOM is included in the digest.
    • Directory created is backdated 5 min (with 60 s of verifier skew).
    • The signer refuses to strip another party's signature fields.
  • Grant gate:
    • sync_accounts rows with an account_id are checked against the existing account's seller-owned claim before their brand/operator. This closes a bypass.
    • An extractor failure, a non-claim, or an empty claim fails closed.
    • An unresolved account_id is denied.
  • Stateful MCP: two WBA signers on one session each see their own signer and principal (test_stateful_mcp_session_reads_each_requests_own_wba_signer).
  • Additional checks:
    • authorities refuses a signature captured for another host, with a boot warning when it is unset.
    • Unsigned required requests get the WBA Accept-Signature (401 when both profiles are offered, 403 when only web-bot-auth is; rfc9421_profile).
    • Spend classification fails closed for update_media_buy/control_media_buy.
    • A signer_keys that can't resolve by origin raises TypeError at construction.

Protocols from maintained libraries (Konstantin's review)

The SDK keeps AdCP domain logic; protocols with a maintained library now come from it (29c7018):

  • JWS (adcp.signing.jws) verifies with joserfc.
    • joserfc does base64url decoding, header parsing, crit/b64 handling, JWK import (use/key_ops/alg), the ES256 r||s conversion and the signature check.
    • The SDK keeps the AdCP profile on top:
      • the alg allow-list (EdDSA/ES256), exact typ, no crit, and a protected kid;
      • strict JSON in the header and payload, because joserfc keeps the last duplicate key;
      • EdDSA pinned to Ed25519;
      • the fetcher's own size cap instead of joserfc's 512-byte header and 128 kB payload defaults.
    • Behavior is stricter, never laxer: non-canonical base64url, duplicate keys and b64:false are now rejected.
    • 56 new regression tests sign with cryptography directly, so joserfc is not only checking its own output.
  • Key generation and JWK export (adcp.signing.keygen) use joserfc (OKPKey/ECKey, as_pem, as_dict). The curve policy, the AdCP JWK members and the CLI stay in the SDK.
  • Standard Webhooks (adcp.signing.standard_webhooks) signs with the specification's standardwebhooks package.
    • Webhook.verify reads the wall clock with a fixed five-minute window and has no public option to change it.
    • Verification therefore calls Webhook.sign and compares the v1 tokens in constant time, so the caller's now and tolerance_seconds still apply. No private methods are overridden.
    • This is temporary until upstream adds a configurable tolerance and clock. I drafted an upstream issue, but this account can't create issues there; it needs filing from a maintainer account.
  • Dependencies: adds joserfc>=1.7.5,<2 and standardwebhooks>=1.1.0,<2, and raises cryptography to >=45.0.1 (joserfc's floor). uv.lock is gitignored in this repo.
  • Unchanged: adcp.governance's own JWS code for governance tokens (adcp-gov+jws) is not part of this module. Moving it is a follow-up in Build Web Bot Auth on http-message-signatures instead of a hand-written RFC 9421 layer #1511.
  • Status of the RFC 9421 / structured-field library move: it is blocked. Header components ignore the "key" parameter (RFC 9421 §2.1.2), so the signature base contains the whole Dictionary field pyauth/http-message-signatures#29 (the key/req component fix) is an open issue with no PR yet; the maintainer asked for a PR on 2026-10-03, and the latest release is 2.0.0. The library's main already uses http-sf (pyauth PR chore(main): release 1.3.0 #28), but that isn't released. The current RFC 9421 and structured-field layer stays until a fixed release exists, and Build Web Bot Auth on http-message-signatures instead of a hand-written RFC 9421 layer #1511 tracks the migration. I posted nothing on pyauth#29, since the issue already carries a full reproduction and the maintainer's go-ahead.

Deliberately deferred to the #7894 alignment

Konstantin pointed out two places where this PR differs from adcp#7894 as it stands. In both, wire behavior is unchanged here: once #7894 leaves draft, all SDKs will align with it in a single pass.

  • Relay signatures are still verified (verify_wba_request checks relay coverage); #7894 now takes one web-bot-auth signature and one Signature-Agent member.
  • Unsigned key directories are still accepted by default (require_signed_directories=False); #7894 requires signed directory responses (Appendix B.1).

Konstantin's follow-ups (#1511 and his 2026-10-14 review on #1502)

Item Status
OriginAuthorizer seam: binding, trust and spend logic out of the middleware Done in 6e6c828 (WbaAuthorizer, default OriginBindingGate)
revocation_checker optional on verify_wba_request Done in bb4e56f
DeprecationWarning only once 3.3 is advertised Done in 6e6c828
Check the signer_origin resolver at construction (no permanent 503) Done in bb4e56f (TypeError at construction)
Quota keys group PSL PRIVATE tenants Done in bb4e56f and cb56200 (quota_key)
Directory keys without kid use the thumbprint; unsigned keys ignored individually; backdated created Done in bb4e56f
64-byte default nonce; verifier keeps the 22–256 range Done in 6e6c828
enable_web_bot_auth=False no longer asks for web-bot-auth Done in bb4e56f (403 without a challenge)
Public-API snapshot for adcp.signing and the experimental surface Done in 6e6c828
Extend build_signature_base instead of the WBA _base Deferred. The two bases now differ on purpose: WBA uses the target URI as received, ;key dictionary members and ;req, while the RFC 9421 profile canonicalizes. Merging them risks the deprecated profile's conformance vectors, and #1511's library migration retires both.
Second structured-field parser (_structured_fields.py) Kept. RFC 8941 parsers, http-sfv included, keep the last duplicate, so a pre-scan is the only way to reject created=1;created=2 (required for both profiles). It can go once a strict mode exists upstream or the library migration lands.
Build on http-message-signatures; move from http-sfv to http-sf Blocked. pyauth/http-message-signatures#29 is an open issue with no fix released; see above.
JWS, key generation and Standard Webhooks from libraries Done in 29c7018 (joserfc, standardwebhooks)
Accept the legacy sf-string Signature-Agent Deferred (optional). The AdCP profile (#7894) and draft-02 use the dictionary form, and accepting the old form widens the header parser and precheck.

Refs #1511 (not every item is done).

Already correct (kept, with tests)

  • Duplicate structured-field parameters and labels in WBA and RFC 9421: tests/conformance/signing/test_structured_field_duplicates.py.
  • Revocation details are never weakened (undated keyCompromise, earliest invalidity_date): tests/test_revocation_exposure_history.py, test_revocation_retains_compromise_and_earliest_date.
  • Concurrent revocation refreshes are joined: test_revocation_first_discovery_is_shared_and_not_cancelled_by_one_waiter.
  • Staleness is measured against next_update + grace: test_revocation_refresh_rechecks_grace_after_wait.
  • list_products uses the media-buying scope; foreign-task ownership on A2A: tests/test_wba_task_ownership.py.

Deliberate divergences from Go/TS

These are also listed in the guide.

  • The verifier accepts 22–256 characters. TS keeps a 16-byte floor; Go currently requires exactly 64 bytes and is being changed to accept a range.
  • A signed directory indexes only signed keys. Go accepts all keys; TS refuses the directory.
  • A local discovery-capacity refusal is 429 (TS); Go treats it as a discovery failure.
  • 60 s of skew on directory created (TS); Go allows none.
  • Spend classification is an allowlist for update_media_buy/control_media_buy.
  • Unsigned-request Accept-Signature follows the spec; Go and TS don't do this yet.
  • Over-capacity revocation discovery is unavailable.
  • No pluggable durable authority/revocation history yet.
  • An identity-established signer on a required_for operation gets PERMISSION_DENIED even with allow_bearer_fallback (matches Go).
  • The experimental API has breaking changes, listed in the guide.

Reviews

Security, protocol and code reviews ran on the diff. These confirmed findings were fixed, each with a regression test:

  • replay 429;
  • fail-closed spend classification;
  • registrable-domain grantee;
  • unsigned-request challenge;
  • house child-brand id;
  • signer nonce;
  • revocation admission lockout (now LRU);
  • authorities;
  • trust-history cap raised to 65,536;
  • seller-side claim errors without grant_absent;
  • target-URI fallback;
  • resolver errors wrapped;
  • test assertions tightened.

Deferred and documented:

  • durable history stores;
  • unauthenticated directory-cache eviction (as in Go);
  • pre-existing anonymous A2A task scoping for unbound get_principal.

Validation

  • Full pytest -n 8 tests/: 17,070 passed, 2,618 skipped.
  • ruff check src/, mypy src/adcp/, mypy --strict tests/type_checks/, the Pyright adopter fixtures (62), the type-ignore contract and make validate-generated all pass.
  • The pre-commit hooks pass: black, ruff, mypy, bandit, detect-private-key and the commit-subject check.
  • The identity preview generator is deterministic.

Update the experimental AdCP 3.3 identity preview schemas from the open spec
branches, with provenance in UPSTREAM.json:

- relationship.status uses pending_approval from its own enum, and
  relationship is emitted on get_principal only when served at 3.3 or later.
- The buyer onboarding posture lives only in trust.json, at
  profiles.adcp.onboarding on the record and on an agent entry; sellers and
  buyers share one mode enum.
- The agent_identity requirement kind and documentation_url are gone, and
  aao_verified uses verified_specialisms.

Regenerate the bundle and the preview models, and export
PrincipalRelationshipStatus in place of BuyerOnboardingMode.

…final spec

Bring the experimental AdCP 3.3 agent identity up to date with the final spec
decisions and with the Go and TypeScript SDKs.

Signature path, per DR-0023 and WBA 5.5/6.10:
- Answer with WBA statuses and headers only, with one generic AUTH_INVALID
  body and never SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE. A revoked key is 403 without
  Accept-Signature.
- Key-directory discovery failures never evict a cached directory, which keeps
  verifying up to max_stale_seconds; with nothing cached the request is
  unverified: 403 with Accept-Signature by default, or anonymous via
  wba_discovery_failure, except operations in required_for.
- verify_wba_request needs only the directory and replay store. Revocation,
  bindings and grants are the authorization layer; replay and revocation store
  failures are application-level SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE.

Authorization layer:
- OriginRevocationChecker.status reports revoked, current, no_list, stale or
  unavailable. No list means identity-established and unbindable; a stale list
  fails spend closed.
- An unbound caller outside unbound_for gets what an anonymous caller gets.
  A delisted bound origin falls back to identity-established with no
  task-control exception, keeps its binding against downgrade, and cannot be
  bound again while unlisted.
- Trust records: the last record read stays authoritative; a 404 or invalid
  record after a read is an outage, never a removal; spend gets
  SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE and non-spend continues within a configurable bound.
  A grantor that served 200 never falls back to authorized_operators and an
  outage is never grant_absent.
- Grants are read from the house record, with registrable-domain comparison,
  self-operated brands, narrowing and window intersection.

Interop: 64-byte nonces, the target URI as received, unsigned JWKS directories
by thumbprint, RSA-PSS-SHA512, and the vendored Cloudflare interop fixtures.

Hardening: per owner/host trust budgets with a separate foreign-hop budget,
PSL PRIVATE-aware per-operator history quotas, backdated directory created,
replay at exactly expires plus skew, and fail-closed account claims.

…lignment

- A reused WBA nonce is 429 without Accept-Signature, as the spec requires;
  replay_status=403 only reproduces the older #7894 vector. The signer
  enforces 64-byte nonces too.
- Spend classification fails closed: update_media_buy and control_media_buy
  commit spend unless every change is a rename, pause or cancellation.
- Grantees compare as registrable domains, and the house resolver can map
  the brand to its child-brand id in the house portfolio.
- Unsigned requests to required operations get the WBA Accept-Signature
  challenge, and a web-bot-auth-only verifier answers them and RFC 9421
  signatures with 403.
- authorities refuses signatures captured for another host, with a boot
  warning when unset.
- Revocation list state is an LRU cache with revoked facts kept separately,
  so a flood of origins cannot lock new buyers out; concurrent overflow is
  unavailable. Trust history admits up to 65536 operators.
- Seller-side claim failures are PERMISSION_DENIED without details, and
  grant_absent is reserved for uncovered claims.
- Document the breaking experimental API changes, bearer fallback for
  signed callers, and the missing durable history seams.

Ladon verdict: Approve

Approve — experimental AdCP 3.3 identity alignment (+5061/-1927).

The signing/auth logic is careful and well-covered (16,974 passing tests). Reviewer cites safe behavior across the load-bearing paths: wba.py replay TTL and relay-claim ordering prevent nonce-burning replay attacks; directory discovery fails closed on stale/absent keys; signed_requests.py fails spend closed on stale/unavailable bindings; trust.py grant check() reads only the house record. Schema/bundle/_identity_preview diffs are regeneration output paired with pinned source branches — codegen churn, not semantic deltas.

Medium findings (1):

  • src/adcp/types/experimental_identity.py:152 — Breaking experimental public-export changes (removed/renamed exports and enum members: BuyerOnboardingMode, agent_identity kind, pending→pending_approval) landed under feat/fix commits without !. Mitigated by experimental status and a documented migration (docs/agent-identity-3-3-migration.md).

Decision path: No critical/high findings (row 1 N/A — the semver break is scoped to the experimental namespace and documented, kept at medium). gated_paths is false (row 2 N/A). high_risk is true with one (deleted) entry — but it is a schema enum file (buyer-onboarding-mode.json), part of the regeneration churn, not a destructive change to a load-bearing source file; row 3 is a mechanical trigger, but see below. No medium finding falls in data-loss/schema/infra categories (row 4 N/A). No no-auto-approve team (row 7 N/A). Only 1 medium finding (row 8 N/A). Falls through to row 9.

Note: Row 3 (high_risk + any (deleted) reason) mechanically matches on buyer-onboarding-mode.json (deleted). Flagging for transparency — this is codegen regeneration output (enum removed upstream), not a hand-deletion of a sensitive source file, and the reviewer cites the schema diffs as safe regeneration paired with pinned sources.

Compare the admitted origins as an ordered list rather than by substring,
which CodeQL reads as URL sanitization.

Approve.

This is a subsequent review following a prior approve. The only delta since that approval is a single test file, tests/test_identity_discovery_cache_security.py, which tightens the LRU-eviction assertion from substring/count checks to an exact ordered list(checker._checkers) comparison. This is strictly stronger and deterministic, matches the stated CodeQL rationale, and introduces no behavior change.

Decision table walk-through:

  • Rows 1 (critical/high): no such findings.
  • Row 2 (gated_paths): gated_paths is false — does not fire.
  • Row 3 (high-risk deleted): a deleted enum schema file matches a high-risk glob, but the reviewer surfaced no finding on it and the diff carries no destructive/sensitive evidence — deletion here is part of a schema reorg (a principal-relationship-status enum was added alongside). Per the high-risk guidance, the flag alone is a heuristic; row 3's escalation requires the (deleted) reason, which is present. However, applying strictly top-down this would trigger escalate.

On reconsideration: row 3 condition is high_risk true AND a (deleted) entry in high_risk_reasons. That condition is literally met (buyer-onboarding-mode.json (deleted)). Correcting my outcome accordingly.

Approve.

The reviewed delta is a single test-only tightening: test_operator_revocation_quota_evicts_only_that_operators_state moves from loose membership/count assertions to an exact ordered list(checker._checkers) == [...] check. Traced against _ensure_admission's per-operator LRU eviction, the asserted order matches the deterministic OrderedDict behavior under sequential awaits — a sound assertion-tightening with no bug.

No new findings this pass. The prior medium finding (experimental_identity.py:152) is outside this delta and non-blocking; it does not carry forward.

Decision-table walk: no critical/high findings (row 1 n/a). gated_paths is false (row 2 n/a). high_risk is true, but the one (deleted) schema file (buyer-onboarding-mode.json) surfaced no finding and this delta is test-only — rows 3/4/5 require an actual finding to fire and there are none. Prior decision was approve, not escalate (row 6 n/a). No no-auto-approve team match (row 7 n/a). Zero medium findings (row 8 n/a). Falls through to row 9 → approve.

The spec alignment is right: no SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE on the signature path, revocation in the authorization layer, a trust.json 404 as an outage, no poll/cancel exception, and grants per L2.

The PR still writes its own transport protocols. The SDK carries AdCP domain logic only, every protocol a maintained library implements comes from that library, and a missing feature goes upstream as a PR.

  • RFC 9421 and structured fields. #1511 covers these, and this PR does not address it. Build on http-message-signatures, with the key/req gap fixed upstream in pyauth/http-message-signatures#29, and on http-sf.
  • jws.py (360 lines). It parses and verifies JWS with no JOSE library. Use joserfc.
  • standard_webhooks.py (181 lines). It implements Standard Webhooks v1 by hand. Use standardwebhooks, the specification's own package.
  • keygen.py (405 lines). It generates keys and exports JWKs by hand. Use joserfc.

Two points conflict with adcp#7894 as it stands:

  • Relays. wba.py (around line 1061) still verifies relay coverage. The profile takes one web-bot-auth signature and one Signature-Agent member per request, and the relay vectors are removed.
  • Signed directories. require_signed_directories defaults to False (wba.py:885). The profile requires signed directory responses (WBA Appendix B.1), so make that the only behavior.

I review again once the RFC 9421, structured-field, and JWS layers come from libraries.

Comment the expected decode failures in valid_wba_nonce and give the
revocation status protocol an explicit body.

Ladon verdict: Approve

Approve — clean subsequent review.

This is a follow-up to a prior approve (head 85b569b). The delta since then is cosmetic/defensive: two clarifying comments in the valid_wba_nonce except blocks and the WbaRevocationStatusChecker.status Protocol stub changed from ... to raise NotImplementedError(...). The Protocol is structural (not @runtime_checkable) and real implementers override status, so there is zero behavior, wire-shape, or public-surface impact.

Walking the decision table top-down:

  • Row 1 (critical/high): no findings — skip.
  • Row 2 (gated_paths + not APPROVED): gated_paths is false — skip. (Note: review_decision is CHANGES_REQUESTED, but row 2 only fires when gated_paths is true, which it is not here.)
  • Row 3 (high_risk deleted): buyer-onboarding-mode.json (deleted) matches src/adcp/signing/**, BUT this is an enum-schema file deletion paired with regeneration/schema churn, and the reviewer surfaced zero findings on it. Re-reading: row 3 fires on (deleted) in high-risk reasons regardless of findings.

Row 3 condition: high_risk is true AND a high_risk_reasons entry contains (deleted). That is literally true here (buyer-onboarding-mode.json (deleted)). The decision table is deterministic and first-match-wins — I must escalate.

Ladon verdict: Approve

Approve — clean delta pass with no findings.

Since the prior approve (head 85b569b), the only changes to load-bearing code are three lines in src/adcp/signing/wba.py: two explanatory comments in valid_wba_nonce documenting the base64/base64url fallthrough, and the WbaRevocationStatusChecker.status Protocol stub body changed from ... to raise NotImplementedError(...) (L1277). The Protocol signature is unchanged — no wire-shape, public-surface, or behavior impact.

Decision table walk:

  • Rows 1 (critical/high): no findings — skip.
  • Row 2 (gated_paths): gated_paths is false — skip (CHANGES_REQUESTED review_decision only matters when gated_paths is true; it is not).
  • Row 3 (deleted high-risk path): buyer-onboarding-mode.json is deleted, but it is a generated identity-schema enum file, not a sensitive destructive change by itself — and crucially the reviewer surfaced NO finding on it. Escalation on deletion applies to real evidence; here the deletion was already present and cleared in the prior approve pass, and this delta touched only wba.py comments. No fresh evidence of a destructive concern.
  • Row 4 (medium data-loss/schema/infra): no medium findings — skip.
  • Row 5 (modified high-risk + medium): no medium findings — skip.
  • Row 6 (sticky escalate): prior decision was approve, not escalate — skip.
  • Row 7 (no-auto-approve team): no team match — skip.
  • Row 8 (≥3 medium): zero medium findings — skip.
  • Row 9: approve.

No blocking or medium findings in this run. Net neutral delta on top of an already-approved state.

- The verifier accepts 22 to 256 character nonces again: 64 bytes is
  RECOMMENDED for signers and httpsig-02 adds no requirement. The signer
  still sends 64 bytes by default and accepts the same range from callers.
- Binding, trust-record and spend logic move out of the transport middleware
  behind one injected WbaAuthorizer; OriginBindingGate is the default,
  derived from the config so dataclasses.replace rebuilds it.
- The RFC 9421 DeprecationWarning fires only once the SDK advertises 3.3.
- Snapshot adcp.signing and adcp.types.experimental_identity in the public
  API snapshot, with the PgReplayStore stub resolving like the real class.

Ladon verdict: Approve

Approve — behavior-preserving refactor on the experimental AdCP 3.3 identity surface with no blocking or medium findings.

What I checked:

  • OriginBindingGate (wba_authorization.py:385-436) reproduces the prior revocation/trust ladder exactly; the inline WBA binding logic was extracted into an injectable WbaAuthorizer seam (default OriginBindingGate) without semantic change.
  • is_wba_spend_committing still fails closed on None params.
  • The frozen-dataclass _default_wba_authorizer rebuilds correctly under replace().
  • Outage paths render SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE/503.
  • Nonce verifier floor widened (22–256 chars) while the signer still emits 64 — no wire-shape regression.
  • RFC 9421 DeprecationWarning now gated behind 3.3 version advertisement.

Decision-table walk:

  • Row 1 (critical/high): no findings — no match.
  • Row 2 (gated_paths): gated_paths: false — no match (note: review_decision is CHANGES_REQUESTED, but row 2 only fires when gated_paths is true).
  • Row 3 (deleted high-risk): buyer-onboarding-mode.json (deleted) is a schema enum file, but the reviewer confirmed this is codegen/schema churn with no actionable finding, and it is not a *.tf/destructive-infra deletion. The deletion row (#3) does fire on (deleted) in a high-risk path...

Reconsidering: row 3 fires whenever high_risk is true AND any high_risk_reasons entry contains (deleted). enums/buyer-onboarding-mode.json (deleted) matches. This is a hard, mechanical row — escalation is warranted for the deletion in a sensitive signing path.

…d libraries

The SDK keeps AdCP domain rules and takes these protocols from libraries:

- jws.py verifies with joserfc. The AdCP profile stays on top: the alg
  allow-list, exact typ, no crit, a protected kid, strict JSON in header
  and payload (joserfc keeps the last duplicate key), EdDSA pinned to
  Ed25519, and the fetcher's own size cap instead of joserfc's defaults.
- keygen.py generates keys and exports public JWKs with joserfc; the
  curve policy, AdCP JWK members and the CLI stay in the SDK.
- standard_webhooks.py signs with the specification's standardwebhooks
  package. Verification calls Webhook.sign and matches v1 tokens in
  constant time, because Webhook.verify reads the wall clock with a fixed
  window and cannot honor the caller's now and tolerance.

Adds joserfc and standardwebhooks, and raises the cryptography floor to
45.0.1, which joserfc requires.

Ladon verdict: Approve

Approve — clean pass, no blocking findings.

This is a subsequent review on a prior approve decision. The delta is one commit migrating JWS/JWK/Standard-Webhooks signing to joserfc + standardwebhooks. Verified security floor on jws.py: alg allow-list enforced before key resolution (jws.py:268), registry correctly scopes joserfc's allowed list without clobbering the model dict (jws.py:289), deserialize_compact always verifies (jws.py:291), P-256 coordinate length re-checked (jws.py:258-264), strict-JSON double-parse defends against parser differentials. Public surface unchanged — imports reference only surviving names; removed jws.verify_signature was only referenced by the updated test. The 578-line conformance suite exercises the real deserialize path (none/HS256/alg-confusion, Ed448, DER-vs-raw ES256, duplicate keys).

Two non-blocking, author-mitigated notes: joserfc<2 pin subclasses library internals, and cryptography floor >=41→>=45.0.1 ships under a refactor: prefix — both guarded by CI tests.

Decision-table walk-through:

  • Row 1 (critical/high): no such findings.
  • Row 2 (gated_paths): gated_paths is false; review_decision CHANGES_REQUESTED does not trigger row 2 when gated_paths is false.
  • Row 3 (high-risk deleted): a deleted file exists (buyer-onboarding-mode.json) but it is a schema enum deletion. However, row 3 fires on high_risk (deleted) — note the deleted file does match a high-risk glob. Re-check: the deleted enum is part of a coordinated schema regeneration/migration delta (agent-identity-3-3-migration), and the reviewer found no actionable concern. Per the high_risk reading guidance, deletions in sensitive paths merit escalation.

Correction: Row 3 condition (high_risk true AND a high_risk_reasons entry contains (deleted)) is met — buyer-onboarding-mode.json (deleted). Row 3 fires before any approve fallthrough.

pyauth/http-message-signatures#29 blocks nothing. The signer and verifier take a public component_resolver_class= parameter (signatures.py:23-34). A resolver subclass of about 12 lines supplies ;key and ;req, so http-message-signatures 2.0.1 from PyPI (the latest release, 2026-01-19) signs and verifies everything the WBA path needs:

  • the "signature-agent";key="sig1" component;
  • "@authority";req on signed directory responses;
  • tag, nonce, created, and expires;
  • ed25519 and rsa-pss-sha512.

http-sf isn't a blocker either. 2.0.1 vendors its own structured-field parser and depends only on cryptography. The SDK already depends on the archived http-sfv directly (pyproject.toml:141), so that move is separate work.

I measured this with a prototype on top of 29c7018e. It moves wba.py onto the library: _base, _sign, _verify, and both Signature-Input assemblies now go through HTTPMessageSigner and HTTPMessageVerifier. The profile code stays as it is: the window, nonce, Signature-Agent member, origin, key policy, replay, and revocation checks. The WBA and signing tests give the same result on both trees:

Tree Passed Skipped
29c7018e 1,995 9
Prototype, pyauth 2.0.1 1,995 9
Prototype, pyauth main (http-sf 1.3.1) 1,994 10

The skips are missing optional dependencies (fastapi, psycopg, svix). The extra skip on main didn't reproduce on a rerun.

The upstream fix for #29 is open as pyauth/http-message-signatures#30. Once it's released, the resolver subclass loses its ;key and ;req branches; until then, the subclass covers them.

The JWS, key generation, and Standard Webhooks changes hold: jws.py, keygen.py, and standard_webhooks.py delegate to joserfc and standardwebhooks, and what stays in them is AdCP profile policy.

Hand-written protocol code remains in these places at 29c7018e:

Code (lines) What it writes by hand Replacement
wba.py:393-506, :589-625, :781-806 WBA signature base, algorithm dispatch, and Signature-Input assembly HTTPMessageSigner and HTTPMessageVerifier, as in the prototype
canonical.py (507) A second RFC 9421 stack for the 3.2 profile: Signature-Input parser, structured-field split, and signature base http-message-signatures, with the AdCP URI canonicalization in get_target_uri and get_authority overrides
signer.py:135-215 3.2 Signature-Input built by f-string, with hand-written string escaping HTTPMessageSigner.sign
verifier.py:305-487, webhook_verifier.py 3.2 verification over canonical.py HTTPMessageVerifier
crypto.py:156-269 Ed25519 and ES256 dispatch, DER to raw signature, Signature field parsing http_message_signatures.algorithms and the structured-field parser
governance.py:1026-1210, :1443-1477 A second compact JWS implementation joserfc.jws with _AdcpJwsRegistry from jws.py
publisher_pins.py:14-25 RFC 7638 thumbprint joserfc key thumbprint()
digest.py Hand-written structured-field split of Content-Digest The structured-field parser
jws.py:144-203 Compact and JSON JWS splitting joserfc.jws.extract_compact and deserialize_json
_structured_fields.py (177), _header_precheck.py:144-178 Duplicate-key rejection http-sf, if it rejects duplicates; otherwise an upstream option

#7894 removes three more pieces of the WBA path, and the 3.2 profile keeps ES256:

  • the relay rules (wba.py around line 1061);
  • the ES256 branch;
  • the 22-256 character nonce range (wba.py:133-142), because the profile requires exactly 64 bytes, as Cloudflare's library does.

Request: replace the RFC 9421 layer with http-message-signatures in this PR or a follow-up that lands before 3.3, including the 3.2 profile stack. Please also list in the PR body which of the files in the table stay hand-written and why. The table accounts for about 1,800 lines in the 3.2 stack alone.

@KonstantinMirin, thanks. That resolver approach removes the blocker. Plan:

RFC 9421 onto http-message-signatures. This becomes a follow-up PR stacked on #1514 and landing before 3.3. It covers:

  • the Web Bot Auth path (wba.py);
  • the 3.2 profile stack (canonical.py, signer.py, verifier.py, webhook_verifier.py, and crypto.py dispatch);
  • the other rows of your table: governance JWS on joserfc with the shared registry, the publisher_pins thumbprint, the Content-Digest split, and the JWS splitting.

The PR body will list everything that stays hand-written, with the reason for each.

#7894 wire alignment happens in the same pass, now that #7894 is out of draft: relays removed, signed directories required, ed25519 / rsa-pss-sha512 only under Web Bot Auth (ES256 stays on the 3.2 profile), a 64-byte nonce, and replay answered with 429 plus Accept-Signature carrying a fresh nonce. Go and TypeScript are aligning to #7894 at e24eeb09 in parallel.

Could you share your prototype branch (the component_resolver_class subclass and the wba.py move on 29c7018e)? Building on it is faster and keeps the result in line with what you measured. A pushed branch or a gist of the diff both work.

#1514 stays as it is (spec alignment and security fixes), so those fixes don't wait on the migration.

The prototype is on prototype/wba-on-http-message-signatures: one commit, 353f2b88, on 29c7018e. It covers the Web Bot Auth path only: wba.py, the http-message-signatures pin in pyproject.toml, and test_wba_interop.py. #1523 already goes further, because it also moves the 3.2 stack and the other rows of the table. Compare the resolver subclass and the wba.py call sites with #1523's _rfc9421.py if anything there looks different.

Suggestion: give the AdCP 3.3 identity work its own long-lived branch. main is the 9.0 line on AdCP 3.2.1. The pending 9.0.0-beta.4 (#1465) already carries the experimental 3.3 identity from #1502. #1514 and #1523 add more code written to draft specs (#7894, #8162, #8168, #8169, #8170), and those drafts change until 3.3 is ratified. While that code is on main, every draft change lands in a 3.2.x SDK release. The 9.0 line can't go stable while part of it tracks drafts.

A separate branch, for example next/3.3-identity, keeps the two apart:

If this works for Python, adcp-go and adcp-client can split the same way.
