Closes #1240. iOS only. Android can't do this while AVDs are named as they are today: see this comment.

What's added

  • label on lease.request: 1 to 64 characters, no control characters. Accepted by simlock lease --label, MCP lease_simulator and POST /v1/lease-requests, and forwarded by a gateway. Protocol 69 → 70.
  • The label goes from the request to driver.makeReady on a prepare boot, through bootForLease and readyProvisionedForLease. Warm boots and recover boots pass none.
  • iOS: simctl rename <udid> <label> before a labelled prepare boot (a rename that fails is logged and the boot goes on), so Simulator.app opens the window with it (on Xcode's device set, drivers.ios.deviceSet: "default"; Simlock's own set gets no Simulator.app window). reclaim renames the simulator back to its stored name after the erase, so a label never outlives its lease; a rename that fails there is logged and never fails the reclaim.
  • A ready simulator granted as it is gets the label through a new optional Driver.applyLabel: the request claims it, renames it outside the decision lock, then stores the lease, so the rename doesn't eat into the lease's TTL. A simulator whose request is not granted (it ended during the boot, or the grant failed) is named back the same way, outside the lock, with its claim held until then, so an unleased simulator doesn't keep someone's label. A failed rename is logged and never fails the lease; it has a 5 s timeout.
  • Android ignores the label, and the CLI reference and the MCP tool description say so.

Evidence

On a real simulator (iPhone 17, iOS 27.0), with an isolated daemon built from this branch on Xcode's device set:

# a shut-down simulator booted for a labelled lease
$ simlock lease --platform ios --device "iPhone 17" --os 27.0 --label wt-check
Simulator.app window: "wt-check – iOS 27.0"

# a warm ready simulator granted as it is
$ simlock lease --platform ios --device "iPhone 17" --os 27.0 --label wt-ready
    wt-ready (35FD6996-…) (Booted)
# after release
    simlock-dc298662-… (35FD6996-…) (Shutdown)

Assumptions

  • Assumption: the label is display-only and in memory. It is not stored with the request or the lease, since an open request does not survive a restart.
  • Assumption: Android accepts the label and ignores it, as documented, rather than refusing it, so a client can send one request shape for both platforms.
  • Assumption: a ready simulator takes the label as its name, which DeviceHub and simctl list show, but a window Simulator.app already has open keeps its old title. I checked: simctl rename on a booted simulator does not retitle its open window. Making every labelled lease boot instead would change the warm pool, so I left it.
  • Assumption: a label can outlive its request in three rare cases, each until the simulator's next reclaim: the daemon crashes after the rename but before the grant, a rename back fails (it is logged), or startup finishes an interrupted reclaim without the driver. The name is display-only, so I didn't add reconciliation for it.

Tests

The contract bounds; the CLI, HTTP, daemon and gateway dispatchers forwarding the label; leasing passing it on a new-device boot and on a shut-down-device boot, applying it to a ready device before its lease, and naming a booted device back when its request ends during the boot, both outside the decision lock; the iOS rename on prepare and none on recover; the iOS applyLabel; a labelled boot and a labelled ready grant whose rename fails still succeeding; the iOS reclaim renaming back, and finishing when that rename fails. src/daemon/device-rotate.e2e.test.ts and two tests in src/daemon/main.test.ts fail on my machine on main too, so not from this change.

Walkthrough

Lease requests now accept an optional label through the CLI, HTTP, MCP, and leasing interfaces. The label is validated and passed through acquisition to the driver. The iOS driver applies it before prepare boots and can apply it to a ready device. It restores the simulator’s recorded name during reclaim or when a labeled handoff does not complete. Recovery boots do not apply the label. Android emulators ignore it.

Suggested reviewers: v3ron

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: Low · up to a12dc

The remaining issue is confined to the iOS manual’s length and reclaim description. It should be corrected, but does not block device leasing.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to a12dc

Simulator targeting and command arguments remain constrained, but name restoration is best-effort. A previous request’s label can survive cleanup failure and remain visible during a later lease. The demonstrated exposure concerns display metadata, not command execution or increased lease privileges.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Restoring the original simulator name is not a condition of reuse. Unsuccessful handoff cleanup suppresses rename errors and releases the device claim; reclaim likewise reports success after a failed restore. A requester-controlled label can consequently remain on a simulator used by a later requester. This introduces cross-request display-metadata residue and potential disclosure when labels contain private identifying information, although no lease-authority bypass is established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new mutation authority is bounded to the managed simulator selected for a request. The supported failure exposure is persistent display text on a reused simulator; reaching another requester requires reuse of that device after failed cleanup. The inspected path does not establish arbitrary simulator targeting, host command execution, or expanded lease privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A requester can supply display text that survives its lease or an unsuccessful handoff when restoration fails. A later unlabeled lease need not overwrite that text. Private project or requester information placed in a label can consequently cross request boundaries; no evidence shows that a caller can force restoration failure or obtain device-data access through this condition.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Untrusted labels cross into simulator administration only as a bounded string argument. The label is separate from the rename verb, target UDID, and device-set arguments. Device claims serialize ownership of the handoff even though driver I/O runs outside the decision lock.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The inherited iOS timeout helper sends SIGTERM and returns a timed-out result without waiting for process termination. New rename callers can then continue toward grant or claim release. This leaves a temporal containment gap for a slow or nonterminating rename; actual late mutation was not demonstrated.
  • inferred — Claims are in-memory. The inspected startup paths reconcile persisted leases and recover reclaiming or spent shutdown devices, but do not demonstrate recovery of a label applied before lease commit. Crash recovery for that interval remains uncertain because complete startup-admission wiring was not verified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate nonfatal label application from cleanup guarantees: retain a durable cleanup-needed state after failed restoration, reconcile it before reuse, and establish rename completion or termination before releasing mutation ownership.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(ios): lease --label names the leased simulator" matches the main change. The PR adds a --label option to simlock lease, and the iOS driver renames the leased simulator to that label. The title is specific and follows a conventional-commit style. It does not cover the protocol bump, the ready-device path, or the Android no-op, but those are secondary to the main point.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is directly related to the changeset. It states that the label is added to lease.request and accepted by simlock lease --label, the MCP lease_simulator tool, and POST /v1/lease-requests. It explains the iOS simctl rename behavior on prepare boots and reclaim, the ready-device applyLabel path, Android ignoring the label, the protocol bump from 69 to 70, and the tests added. It also links issue #1240.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #1240 is open and active. Its coding requirements are: (1) an optional, bounded, display-only label on the lease request through CLI, MCP, and HTTP; (2) on iOS, the simulator name is the label so Simulator.app and DeviceHub show it; (3) Android behavior is not required beyond the current AVD naming limit; (4) no change when no label is given.

Evidence:

  • Request contract: leaseLabelSchema in src/contract/schemas.ts enforces 1–64 characters and no control characters. lease.request in src/contract/operations.ts adds optional label. Protocol moves from 69 to 70.
  • Surfaces: simlock lease --label (src/cli/commands/lease.ts), MCP lease_simulator (src/mcp/server.ts), and POST /v1/lease-requests (src/http/lease-declarations.ts, src/http/app.ts, src/http/tracker.ts) forward the label. The gateway forwards it through src/gateway/dispatcher.ts and src/gateway/fleet-coordinator.ts.
  • iOS naming: src/drivers/ios/index.ts makeReady renames the simulator with #rename before a prepare boot when a label is set. It does not rename on recover. applyLabel renames to the label, or to the stored name when the label is undefined. reclaim renames back to data.name after erase. The diff confirms each path. All rename failures in #rename are logged and not thrown.
  • Ready grants: src/leasing/lease-acquisition-coordinator.ts claims a virtual ready device, applies the label outside the decision lock, then stores the lease. An ungranted labelled handoff clears the label before releasing its claim.
  • Android: the label is accepted and ignored. The CLI reference and MCP description state this. This matches the issue's stated Android limit.
  • Tests: the PR description and summary list tests for contract bounds, forwarding, boot and ready paths, iOS rename on prepare and not on recover, applyLabel, reclaim rename-back, and rename failure tolerance.

Limit: a Simulator.app window that is already open keeps its old title after simctl rename. The PR states this. The name, which DeviceHub and simctl list show, is set. The issue asks for the name, so this does not leave a stated requirement unmet.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed area supports the label feature for #1240:

  • Contract and protocol: the label schema, its tests, and the protocol bump 69→70 with its version test. The new field needs these.
  • Surfaces: CLI, MCP, HTTP, daemon dispatcher, gateway dispatcher, and fleet coordinator forward the field. Their tests and the docs (CLI reference, MCP tool description, connect-your-agent, programmatic client) describe it.
  • Core and leasing: ProvisionDeviceOptions.label, Driver.makeReady and optional Driver.applyLabel, bootForLease and readyProvisionedForLease label parameters, LeaseRequestOptions.label (metadata only, not used for routing), and the label-ready operation with its handoff cleanup. These carry the label to the driver and undo it when the grant does not happen.
  • iOS driver: #rename, applyLabel, the prepare-only rename, and reclaim rename-back. These implement the iOS requirement.
  • Fake driver and docs: the fake and AGENTS.md files support the tests and the driver contract.

Minor point: reclaim now runs one extra simctl rename for every iOS reclaim, including unlabelled leases. The rename sets the stored name, which is normally the current name, so the visible result for unlabelled leases does not change. The change supports the requirement that a label never outlives its lease. It is not an unrelated change.

No unrelated change is shown by the reviewed evidence.

Document the pre-grant crash gap.

A crash after this rename but before grant can leave the label on an unleased simulator until reclaim. Add this known gap to the manual.

As per coding guidelines, “a known gap lives in its module’s manual.”

773-773: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not fail a boot when the label rename fails.

A failed or timed-out rename throws before boot. The leasing path then treats it as a boot failure and can destroy the device or reject the request. This contradicts the new documented guarantee that rename failures do not fail a lease. Catch and log the rename failure, use the five-second label timeout, and continue booting. Update the boot flow around the #simctl rename call so a failed or timed-out
rename is caught and logged without aborting the boot or lease. Use the required
five-second timeout for the rename, then continue the existing boot flow.

The iOS manual now exceeds the 150-line limit, and the Physical → line is detached from Reclaim.

The file now has 157 lines. The documentation rule says a module manual is "in at most 150 lines". This change adds the lines that push it over the limit.

The Label — paragraph (lines 65-68) is inserted between the Reclaim — paragraph and the Physical → devicectl device uninstall app … line (line 69). Physical → is the physical-device branch of reclaim. After this change it reads as part of the Label — paragraph. Markdown also merges it into that paragraph because no blank line separates them.

Fix both problems together:

  • Condense the new text.
  • Keep the Physical → line directly under Reclaim —.
  • Trim other content so the file is at most 150 lines.
📝 Proposed restructure (adjust to reach ≤150 lines)
