feat(fiber): persist devnet config and make initialization optional - #540
Align Fiber node management with the local CKB workflow documented in the repository: direct startup prepares a fresh environment automatically, ordinary stop/start preserves configuration and data, and clean commands explicitly reset data. fiber init is an optional way to prepare files before editing FNN configuration; it is not a prerequisite for fiber start or node --fiber.
Previously, Fiber configuration was regenerated on startup, and authenticated RPC nodes could be misreported as stopped. This change persists full per-node configuration and credentials and authenticates management RPC calls.
Node management is independent of LSP and lsp-cli: OffCKB manages the selected FNN executable, its configuration, accounts and management RPC. LSP is one optional example of an FNN feature; OffCKB does not invoke or require its tooling.
Changes
Persist program/template paths, explicit funding-account bindings, and per-node config/token paths in the new manifest. The unreleased old Fiber schema has no migration.
Add idempotent initialization, node append, and a durable preparation journal that preserves newly generated keys across interrupted provisioning. Validate all existing nodes before spawning processes.
Keep node-count, version and binary-selection flags on startup commands for first use, matching the direct CKB startup model. Existing environments reuse their saved records and reject conflicting selection flags; this does not add legacy Fiber configuration compatibility.
Support selected built-in accounts, imported/generated accounts, shared-account warnings, and zero-balance startup.
Generate independent Biscuit keys and management tokens; authenticate internal node/peer RPC calls and distinguish credential failures from stopped nodes.
Record public startup information for status queries and show CUSTOM_CONFIG, without recording private keys or token contents in runtime metadata.
Document restart versus destructive reset, correct the devnet configuration editor's restart guidance, and clarify clean-command help/output.
Refuse both data-only clean commands before deleting anything when registered config/token paths overlap any deletion target, including another node's store or CKB data. Check directory-link aliases and recheck after confirmation. Clarify external-file cleanup boundaries and document preserving configs/credentials while reconciling contract references after a genesis reset.
Bundle the official Biscuit WASM runtime and its license with the distributable CLI.
Frozen dependency install, TypeScript, lint, build, and diff checks passed. Lint retains one existing warning in src/node/install.ts.
After rebasing onto develop (b444332) and addressing review findings, TypeScript, lint, build, and the full CI test/coverage command passed again: 57 suites, 559 tests passed, 7 skipped; coverage thresholds passed. Added 12 cleanup regressions covering cross-node paths, CKB data, directory links, safe sibling directories, edits during confirmation, and external files.
Real macOS arm64 checks with CKB 0.208.0 and the checksum-verified FNN 0.9.0 release: explicit three-node preparation, authenticated RPC/status, append while running, zero-balance startup, confirmed external funding without restarting FNN, live configuration snapshots, invalid-token reporting, and stop/start persistence of config/key/token/identity files.
Real first-use node --fiber --daemon prepared the default two nodes without a preceding init. Verified authenticated automatic interconnection through node_info, connect_peer, and list_peers.
Exercised the final distributable CLI bundle's Biscuit runtime against the isolated chain. Test processes were stopped after validation.
Preserved upstream CKB/miner lifetime cleanup during the rebase. Added a regression check for delegated SIGTERM while Fiber initialization is waiting for an FNN download. Repeated real combined daemon start/status/stop on the isolated two-node environment, including an authenticated node, without the former process-title workaround: the new base includes the spaced-path daemon fix (fix: recognize the offckb daemon when its CLI path contains spaces #533), and no test CKB/miner/FNN processes remained.
Rechecked the reproduced cleanup bug against valid initialized files and real Biscuit credentials: unsafe paths now refuse without losing files; relocating the files permits reset and subsequent startup preparation. Verified the documented recovery workflow with real CKB/FNN on a fresh isolated chain: a genesis message change invalidated old contract references; updating only those references restored two nodes, including authenticated RPC, while credential/identity hashes and other custom config values stayed unchanged. Test processes were stopped.
Verification limits
The core node lifecycle was verified with ordinary FNN. End-to-end behavior of optional LSP or other extension tools was not exercised and is not a prerequisite for this node-management change. Generic configuration persistence and RPC authentication do not by themselves establish compatibility with a particular extension.
The prior 13ef0d9 commit passed the repository's Node 20 test/build/general CLI integration matrix on Linux, Windows and macOS. The dedicated CKB/FNN lifecycle and genesis-recovery smoke checks were run on macOS / Node 24; that FNN-specific workflow has not been exercised on Windows/Linux or Node 20. The review-fix commit's matrix results are tracked by PR CI.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Added fiber init to prepare Fiber nodes and credentials without starting them; Fiber environments can also initialize automatically on first startup.
Added support for appending nodes and choosing built-in or random funding accounts. Nodes with zero balance can start.
Fiber status now reports custom configurations, funding details, and authentication failures.
Improvements
Node configurations and Fiber data persist across stops and restarts; existing configuration edits are preserved and checked at startup.
Clarified cleanup options: data resets remove chain and Fiber stores while retaining configuration and keys; full cleanup also removes the Fiber environment.
The PR adds Fiber initialization and persistent per-node state, including saved configs, funding-account bindings, and optional Biscuit RPC authentication. Startup and status handling use the saved environment, while CLI guidance and cleanup messaging describe the updated lifecycle.

Summary
Manifest and CLI contract .changeset/*, src/cli.ts, src/fiber/nodes-yml.ts, src/fiber/paths.ts, README.md, docs/fiber-devnet.md
The CLI adds fiber init options. The manifest records the FNN program, node initialization state, funding account, and config and token paths.
Initialization validates and provisions node files, funding accounts, Biscuit credentials, and configs. Existing files are preserved. The build copies the Biscuit WASM runtime assets.
Startup, RPC, and status src/cmd/node.ts, src/cmd/fiber.ts, src/fiber/manager.ts, src/fiber/rpc.ts, src/fiber/runtime.ts, src/fiber/status.ts, src/util/json-rpc.ts, tests/fiber-lifecycle.test.ts, tests/fiber-status.test.ts, README.md, docs/fiber-devnet.md, docs/fiber-validation.md
Startup uses the initialized manifest and per-node configs. RPC calls support token authentication. Runtime records and status results include configuration, authentication, and funding details.
CLI warnings and documentation distinguish Fiber data cleanup, devnet data reset, and full cleanup. The reset test checks which files each operation removes and preserves.

Guard retained manifest files before removing Fiber stores.
validateManifest accepts any non-empty config_file or rpc_token_file. A hand-edited value such as nodes/1/fiber/store/config.yml resolves inside the store. Both fiber clean --data and clean --data then remove that file recursively, despite reporting that configs and tokens are kept.
The next startup calls validatePreparedNodes, which requires both files and does not regenerate them. Generated defaults are outside the store, so this requires editing nodes.yml, but the accepted input still creates a reachable startup failure. Refuse either data-clean operation when a retained manifest file is inside a deletion target.

Generated paths are inside the devnet directory. However, validateManifest accepts custom paths, and resolveNodeFile preserves absolute paths or allows .. traversal. Full cleanup removes only the devnet directory, so external files remain. Update the warning to describe this exception.

Include Fiber in the restart instructions.
If the user started with offckb node --fiber, stopping that process also stops Fiber. The instructed offckb node command starts only CKB, so Fiber remains stopped. Tell users to restart with their original options, including --fiber when applicable. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Document Fiber recovery after contract changes.
A spec edit can change the Fiber system-cell hashes. After offckb clean -d, startup preserves the old configs and validateNodeConfig can reject their stale fiber.scripts.
Document a recovery path. offckb fiber clean --data is not sufficient because it preserves configs. offckb fiber clean removes the Fiber environment, including custom configs and credentials, so state-preserving reconciliation is preferable.

Use platform-neutral path assertions in the Fiber tests.
The test suite runs on Windows. The current assertions use POSIX separators, so they can miss the simulated rename failure and reject the platform-specific missing-file path.

Reviewed commit 13ef0d9e74dae97c8ae8b139207d50815bc9fea6. One reproduced P2 finding:
[P2] Protect retained config/token files before deleting data directories.
The new manifest accepts arbitrary config_file and rpc_token_file paths (nodes-yml.ts, lines 76–80), but both fiber clean --data and clean --data recursively delete Fiber stores without checking whether those paths contain files that must be retained.
Reproduced locally against this commit:
Prepare a node with an existing network identity, move its config/token into nodes/1/fiber/store/, and update the manifest accordingly.
validatePreparedNodes accepts this configuration.
Run either data-only clean command. Both files are deleted, despite the output saying configs and tokens are kept.
Subsequent startup preparation fails with required file missing; the files are not regenerated.
Default paths are unaffected; this requires custom manifest paths. Before deleting anything, check all retained config/token paths against all deletion targets and refuse cleanup on overlap. Apply the guard to both cleanup entry points, including the chain-data directory for clean --data, and add regression coverage.
Validation on macOS / Node 24.8.0: frozen dependency install, typecheck, build and diff checks passed; lint has one existing warning in src/node/install.ts. Full pnpm test:ci --runInBand passed: 57 suites, 547 tests passed, 7 skipped, coverage thresholds met. The initial sandboxed run could not bind localhost; rerunning with local socket/process access passed. Real CKB/FNN integration, Windows/Linux and Node 20 were not exercised in this review.
