The "Using the CRS Sandbox" page described a sandbox that no longer exists in places, and a reader who copied its examples got errors.

What was stale

  • x-crs-version: documented as latest by default plus "any supported semver version (e.g. 3.3.9)", with examples using 3.3.9 and 4.25.0. The sandbox accepts only the aliases v4-lts (default), v3-lts and latest; a version number is answered with 400 unsupported x-backend / x-crs-version combination. Three of the six quick-reference examples and the first advanced example failed as written.
  • Missing: x-crs-detection-paranoia-level, the json-report format, GET /backends, the X-CRS-Version response header, the HTML report browsers get without x-format-output, and the source: sandbox-edge shape of edge errors.
  • Architecture: backend list named apache-3_3_8 style containers and Filebeat; the services are <engine>-v4-lts, <engine>-v3-lts, <engine>-latest and the logs go to S3 and Elasticsearch through the shared file system.

What this does

Rewrites those parts and keeps the rest (audience, basic usage, capacity, privacy, known issues). Every example was run against production on 2026-10-21 and the outputs pasted from the real responses. Adds a short "Discovering what is available" section pointing at /backends as the authoritative list, a json-report example, the 403 = blocked / 949110 explanation, the go-httpbin mirror behind the WAFs, and a known-issue entry on browsers rewriting URLs before sending.

Built locally with Hugo (relearn theme, tabs render), the British-English check passes, and every absolute link answers 200 or 403 (lychee accepts both).

Once coreruleset/website#548 (the /sandbox playground page) is live, a one-line follow-up can link it from here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated CRS Sandbox guidance to use supported version aliases and detection-paranoia settings.
    • Documented browser CORS behavior, HTTP mirrors, WAF status codes, response headers, backend discovery, and unsupported combinations.
    • Added details about output formats, browser defaults, JSON reports, report fields, and exact CRS tags.
    • Updated examples, architecture notes, known issues, storage behavior, frontend errors, and browser URL rewriting.

x-crs-version takes the aliases v4-lts (default), v3-lts and latest;
the page documented latest as the default and semver values such as
3.3.9 or 4.25.0, which the sandbox answers with a 400. Also document
x-crs-detection-paranoia-level, json-report, the /backends discovery
endpoint, the X-CRS-Version response header, the HTML report browsers
get by default, the sandbox-edge error shape, and refresh the backend
list, the log pipeline and the examples with current output.

Full details: False Positive Risk & Existing Coverage

Explanation

Not applicable. The pull request changes only content/6-development/6-4-using-the-crs-sandbox.md. It does not add or widen detection patterns and does not change rules/*.conf, plugins/*.conf, or regex-assembly/.

Full details: Crs Rule Metadata & Id Conventions

Explanation

Passed — not applicable. The reviewed diff changes only content/6-development/6-4-using-the-crs-sandbox.md and adds or modifies no SecRule in rules/*.conf, plugins/*.conf, or crs-setup.conf.example.

Full details: Rule & Config Breaking Changes

Explanation

No CRS rule or configuration breaking change is introduced. The PR changes only content/6-development/6-4-using-the-crs-sandbox.md; it does not modify rule IDs, tags, messages, paranoia assignments, data files, crs-setup.conf.example, or Go/Python tooling APIs. Therefore the required Breaking changes section and release migration note are not applicable.

Full details: Owasp Security (Web, Api & Llm)

Explanation

PASS — The pull request changes only sandbox documentation. The new CORS text documents an already-public, unauthenticated sandbox and exposes only non-secret request metadata (x-backend, x-crs-version, x-unique-id); it does not add credentials, authorization bypasses, URL fetching, code execution, dependencies, or infrastructure configuration. The page also warns users not to send personal data, credentials, API keys, or other sensitive information (content/6-development/6-4-using-the-crs-sandbox.md:353-355). No OWASP Web, API, or LLM failure condition is introduced.

Full details: Unpinned Dependencies & Actions

Explanation

Passed — not applicable. The pull request changes only content/6-development/6-4-using-the-crs-sandbox.md; it does not change a dependency manifest, lockfile, Dockerfile, workflow, or pipeline file covered by this check.

Full details: Secrets, Payloads & Pii In Logs

Explanation

PASS — The pull request changes one documentation page and does not add a logger, stack trace, telemetry emitter, workflow output, or audit-log rule. The sample responses contain only synthetic CRS payloads such as /etc/passwd, rule IDs, scores, and a correlation ID. The page explicitly warns users not to send personal data, credentials, API keys, or other sensitive information (content/6-development/6-4-using-the-crs-sandbox.md:353-355). No credential, token, cookie, email, phone number, IP address, or real traffic appears in the changed examples.

Full details: New Dependency Scrutiny

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only content/6-development/6-4-using-the-crs-sandbox.md. The reviewed diff adds no dependency manifest entry, GitHub Actions uses: step, or Buildkite plugin reference. The new documentation links and mentions do not trigger this check.

Full details: Install & Build-Time Code Execution

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only one Markdown documentation file. The added shell snippets use curl to call the sandbox and do not pipe downloaded content to a shell. No Dockerfile, CI workflow, shell installer, package lifecycle script, Go checksum bypass, Python install hook, Terraform provisioner, or build-time binary download was introduced.

Full details: Renovate: Config Present And Valid

Explanation

The pull request changes only content/6-development/6-4-using-the-crs-sandbox.md. It does not touch renovate.json, renovate.json5, .github/renovate.json, or .github/renovate.json5. The repository contains renovate.json, so the no-config trigger does not apply.

Full details: Ai Contribution Disclosure

Explanation

⚠️ WARNING: The PR has no ## ai disclosure section, although AI assistance is explicit in the body (Generated with Claude Code) and the 156-line documentation diff was materially assisted. The commit also contains Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1, which the policy prohibits. The PR body also lacks the required lowercase ## what, ## why, and ## refs sections.

Resolution

Add lowercase ## what, ## why, and ## refs sections. Add ## ai disclosure with concrete **tools used** including model and version, **assisted with** describing the generated documentation work, and **review performed** listing specific verification. Remove the AI signature from the PR body and rewrite the commit to remove the Co-Authored-By trailer.

Clarify the blocking-mode header contract.

The table documents omission as the blocking-mode representation, but the later text calls On the default value and says mode values are case insensitive. State whether On is accepted as an x-crs-mode header value or only names the internal SecRuleEngine setting. Keep one consistent contract.

## Architecture

The sandbox consists of various parts. An NLB (Network Load Balancer) sits in front of the frontend and distributes incoming traffic. The frontend that receives the requests runs on OpenResty (Nginx with Lua). It handles the incoming request, selects and configures the backend running CRS based on the request headers, proxies the request to the backend, and waits for the response. Then it parses the WAF audit log and sends the matched rules back in the format chosen by the user.

Describe the complete response representation.

The architecture sentence limits the response to matched rules. The documented default is the full audit log, and browsers receive an HTML report. State that OpenResty returns the selected representation, with the browser-specific HTML behavior.
