fix(pt): select device before loading torch ops - #5612
Select the rank-local GPU before PyTorch availability queries and custom-op loading can create a default context. All five PT/PT-exportable model initialization paths use the shared helper.
GPU capability comes from the linked LibTorch: CUDA libraries or its torch_hip target. When DeePMD's toolkit is disabled, GPU LibTorch selects the device through its generic device registry without CUDA/HIP headers. CPU-only LibTorch retains its Torch fallback even when DeePMD is configured with a GPU toolkit.
Validation:
Fresh toolkit-disabled GPU LibTorch native build: six isolated helper/model initialization probes selected GPU 1 and left GPU 0 without a primary context. The focused C++ suite passed 12 tests (one CPU-only test skipped) on two Slurm GPUs; the CPU build passed 11 tests (one GPU-only test skipped).
Nine CMake configuration cases passed across CPU/CUDA/ROCm toolkits and CPU/CUDA/HIP LibTorch capabilities.
Fresh TensorFlow/PyTorch CPU native build and an executable CPU-only LibTorch fallback check passed.
Fresh CUDA native build on Slurm node n2 with two GPUs. In separate processes, the helper and all five model initialization paths selected visible GPU 1, loaded the custom-op library, and left GPU 0 without a primary context. The model-path probes stopped at an intentionally absent archive; a Torch allocation then confirmed the current runtime device remained GPU 1.
ROCm capability was tested at configure time; no physical ROCm runtime was used.
Ruff, formatting, whitespace checks, and commit hooks passed.
Preselect the CUDA/HIP device from the rank-local GPU before PyTorch CUDA queries or torch custom-op loading can create a default-device context. This avoids each MPI rank leaving an unused context on GPU 0 in multi-GPU LAMMPS runs.

The change adds Torch GPU capability detection and shared device preselection for PyTorch model initialization. Experimental PyTorch initialization now checks in-memory content before loading the operator library. Tests cover capability detection, device selection, and unsupported content.
CMake now detects CUDA and generic Torch GPU support separately. PyTorch backend targets and tests receive the generic GPU capability definition. An integration test checks detection across mocked toolkit and runtime combinations.
Adds torch_has_gpu_support() and preselect_torch_device(). The five PyTorch initialization paths use the helper to set the GPU ID and availability. Tests cover CPU-only and GPU device selection.
Experimental model content validation source/api_cc/src/DeepPotPTExpt.cc, source/api_cc/src/DeepSpinPTExpt.cc, source/api_cc/tests/test_deeppot_ptexpt.cc, source/api_cc/tests/test_deeppot_dpa_ptexpt_spin.cc
Experimental PyTorch initialization rejects non-empty in-memory content before operator-library loading. Tests verify the unsupported-loading error for both model types.
deepmodeling/deepmd-kit#6110: Both changes use the PyTorch GPU capability build contract. That PR uses the CUDA capability definition for CUDA canonical-graph compilation.

Explanation
The title "fix(pt): select device before loading torch ops" matches the main change. The PR moves per-rank GPU selection through a shared preselect_torch_device helper into all five PT and PT-Expt init paths, and does this before the custom-op library loads or any availability check creates a default context. The title is specific, short, and free of file lists or vague terms.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#4171] requires each MPI rank to avoid creating GPU contexts on non-compute GPUs. preselect_torch_device() selects gpu_rank % gpu_num before PyTorch availability queries and custom-op loading. All five PT/PT-exportable initialization paths use this helper. The reported two-GPU CUDA validation selected GPU 1 and left GPU 0 without a primary context. CPU-only LibTorch retains the CPU fallback.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to [#4171]. The LibTorch GPU-capability detection, shared device-selection helper, initialization-path refactors, ordering changes, and tests support rank-local GPU selection and safe fallback behavior. The .pt2file_content rejection prevents unsupported initialization before operator loading. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Reviewed draft head 5532e79536ee314aeea2a90a79f241a16afbe51d with three independent full subagent reviews. Two P2 initialization issues remain inline: raw runtime preselection is keyed to the DeePMD toolkit rather than LibTorch's GPU capability, and the exportable initializers mutate device state before rejecting unsupported in-memory content. The intended selection-before-op-load ordering is otherwise consistent across the five PT initialization paths. Several C++ and wheel checks are currently failing/cancelled and need investigation after the fixes. Because this PR was opened by the active njzjz-bot account, this is a comment-only review rather than a self-request-changes event.
The quota is about to reset, so I am concentrating the remaining token budget on these reviews.
Gate raw runtime device preselection on LibTorch GPU support and reject unsupported in-memory PT2 content before device or operator-library side effects.

Found a new ROCm regression in the follow-up LibTorch capability guard; the inline finding needs a fix before merge. I attempted REQUEST_CHANGES, but GitHub rejected it because the authenticated account (njzjz-bot) is also the PR author, so this is a comment-only review rather than a formal blocking review.
Validation: checked DeePMD's CMake detection against PyTorch's TorchConfig.cmake.in, where TORCH_CUDA_LIBRARIES is populated inside USE_CUDA. Compiled the exact current preselection helper against a two-device runtime stub: TENSORFLOW_USE_ROCM=1 with DEEPMD_TORCH_HAS_GPU=0 reports gpu_id=1 for rank 1 but leaves the runtime on device 0, with zero device-selection calls. Enabling the capability selects device 1. This is a control-flow reproduction, not a hardware ROCm run.

Draft/self-review note: this head still has a ROCm device-selection blocker. DEEPMD_TORCH_HAS_GPU is derived from the CUDA-only DEEPMD_TORCH_HAS_CUDA, so a HIP/ROCm LibTorch build can still bypass the rank-local DPSetDevice path even though a GPU backend is present. The PR is draft and authored by the executing account, so I am leaving this substantive comment rather than APPROVE/REQUEST_CHANGES.

Select the rank GPU in NativeSpinPTExpt::init before loading ops.
This PR routes the other PT and PT-exportable model init paths through preselect_torch_device. NativeSpinPTExpt::init is not in that set. For a native-spin .pt2 archive without has_comm_artifact, the spin plugin routes the model here. The function then calls deepmd::load_op_library, torch::cuda::device_count(), and torch::cuda::is_available() before any device selection. A nonzero gpu_rank can therefore create a context on GPU 0 instead of its assigned GPU.
The fix needs three changes, not only the helper call. Reject file_content first, then select the device, then load the op library. This matches the order in DeepSpinPTExpt.
Suggested fix
- deepmd::load_op_library(deepmd::DPBackend::PyTorchExportable);
if (!file_content.empty()) {
throw deepmd::deepmd_exception(
"In-memory file_content loading is not supported for .pt2 models. "
"Please provide a file path instead.");
}
- const int gpu_num = torch::cuda::device_count();- gpu_id = (gpu_num > 0) ? (gpu_rank % gpu_num) : 0;- gpu_enabled = torch::cuda::is_available();+ preselect_torch_device(gpu_rank, gpu_id, gpu_enabled);+ deepmd::load_op_library(deepmd::DPBackend::PyTorchExportable);
