Configure LAMMPS source and caches .github/workflows/build_cc.yml, source/install/build_cc.sh |
The workflow configures LAMMPS and ccache settings, restores or clones the LAMMPS source, installs ccache after checksum verification, and restores ccache data. The install script passes LAMMPS_SOURCE_ROOT to CMake when set; otherwise, it uses stable_22Jul2025_update2. |
Configure build variants .github/workflows/build_cc.yml |
Both build variants disable precompiled headers and use ccache for compilation. The workflow reports ccache statistics after the steps. |

Explanation
The title "ci: cache C++ builds and LAMMPS source" matches the main change. The PR adds caching for the C++ build (ccache, per-variant namespaces, restored cache data) and caches the pinned LAMMPS source tree, which the workflow restores from cache or shallow-clones. It is concise, uses the conventional commit prefix, and avoids vague terms. The title does not mention the build script change or the DataModifierTF/DeepTensorTF include fixes, but those are secondary to the main objective.

Re-reviewed the new draft head. The new commits replace the previous FetchContent override with an explicit cached LAMMPS_SOURCE_ROOT path and teach source/install/build_cc.sh to use that source tree when provided; the fallback remains the existing pinned LAMMPS version. I checked the cache scoping, compiler-launcher wiring, generic build-script fallback, existing review thread, and exact-head CI. The old mutable ccache-action concern is now obsolete because ccache is downloaded directly with a fixed SHA256. Build C++ and Test CUDA are green on this head; the remaining exact-head workflows are still in progress. I found no new high-confidence correctness blocker. This PR remains draft, so no APPROVE/REQUEST_CHANGES disposition is submitted.

NEEDS HUMAN REVIEW: this PR is now ready for review, so I re-checked the same head against the complete two-file diff, repository guidance, existing review threads/discussion, and exact-head CI. The implementation still looks functionally sound: the cached LAMMPS source remains version-pinned, ccache is downloaded with a fixed SHA-256, compiler launchers are scoped by build variant, and build_cc.sh preserves the existing pinned-LAMMPS fallback.
I also evaluated the new CodeRabbit thread about pinning the two newly added actions/cache uses to commit SHAs. I am not duplicating that inline finding; the repository currently uses GitHub-owned actions by major-version tags elsewhere (including actions/cache@v6), so I do not consider this alone a high-confidence PR-specific blocker under the repository's present convention.
Exact-head Build C library, Build C++, Test Python, Test CUDA, CodeQL, and PyPI workflows are green. Test C++ is still in progress, so I am not issuing a final approval disposition yet. The executing account is also the PR author, so any eventual GitHub APPROVE will need an independent reviewer/account.

All exact-head CI has now completed successfully, including Test C++. The code review is otherwise ready for approval, but GitHub rejected the APPROVE submission because the executing account (njzjz-bot) is also the PR author (Review Can not approve your own pull request). No new blocker was found; an independent reviewer/account is required for the formal approval.

Exact-head CI is now complete: the remaining Test C++ matrix finished successfully, and the relevant Build C++, Build C library, Test Python, Test CUDA, CodeQL, and package/PyPI checks are green (with only expected skipped jobs). The previously reviewed two-file change still has no high-confidence functional or build-system blocker.
I attempted the final APPROVE, but GitHub rejected it because the executing account is also the PR author (Review Can not approve your own pull request). An independent reviewer/account is therefore required for the formal approval.

CI build-cache performance validation (2026-10-28)Compared the wall-clock time of
Cache evidence: all four PR jobs restored the pinned LAMMPS source cache (the clone step was skipped) and a prior per-variant ccache archive. All four Build C++ matrix jobs completed successfully. Logs:
Interpretation / limitation: these are observed build-step timings, not full-workflow speedups and not a controlled same-commit A/B test. The master and PR runs have different SHAs, dates, and potentially runner/toolchain conditions, so the entire delta should not be attributed exclusively to caching. However, the ~79–82% ccache hit rates and LAMMPS source cache hits directly confirm that the new reuse paths are working. A same-source cache-on/off benchmark would quantify isolated impact more precisely. Agent: ChatGPT |

Reviewed commit 1cca091.
The cache configuration and verified ccache download are reasonable, but the new explicit LAMMPS source override has two reproducible build-script defects: a previously cached LAMMPS_VERSION takes precedence over the requested source, and a source path containing whitespace is split into multiple CMake arguments. Please address the two inline findings and add small argument/source-selection regressions.
Validation: I ran the exact build script with real Bash and CMake 3.28.3 against a minimal project containing the production LAMMPS source-selection block; only FetchContent's download operations were replaced with stand-ins. A fresh no-space override works, a reused build ignores it, and clearing only LAMMPS_VERSION restores it. A whitespace-containing path is truncated even in a fresh build. Workflow YAML/matrix/cache/launcher checks, shell syntax, changed Python lint and whitespace checks passed, and the ccache asset SHA-256 matches the official release.
These are reproducible configuration/argument-handling findings, not a claim that every clean CI run fails. I did not run the full native build, GPU validation, documentation build, hosted CI or cache-performance measurements.

[P2] Clear the cached version when selecting an explicit source
This script reuses source/build. After one default invocation, its CMake cache contains LAMMPS_VERSION=stable_22Jul2025_update2. A later invocation with LAMMPS_SOURCE_ROOT only adds the source-root definition; it does not remove that version. The existing plugin CMake selection enters the download branch whenever LAMMPS_VERSION is defined and overwrites LAMMPS_SOURCE_ROOT with the downloaded tree. Thus the caller's explicit source is silently ignored on a reused build, potentially selecting a different LAMMPS version than intended.
The configuration probe reproduces this: fresh explicit source succeeds; default configuration followed by an explicit source in the same build directory still selects _deps/lammps_download-src; adding only -ULAMMPS_VERSION restores the requested source. Clear the mutually exclusive cached setting or establish equivalent explicit-source precedence, and cover this transition.

[P2] Preserve the source directory as one CMake argument
LAMMPS_ARGS is assembled as a scalar string and expanded unquoted here, so a valid external source path containing whitespace is split by the shell. For example, setting LAMMPS_SOURCE_ROOT="/opt/lammps source" passes LAMMPS_SOURCE_ROOT=/opt/lammps plus a separate source argument instead of the intended directory. The exact-script configuration probe confirms the truncated root even with an empty build directory.
Keep the CMake arguments as separate positional arguments (or a shell array if the script explicitly uses Bash), and pass the complete LAMMPS_SOURCE_ROOT=... definition as one argument. Quoting the entire combined "-D LAMMPS_SOURCE_ROOT=..." string is not equivalent. Add a whitespace-path case alongside the normal source-root case.
Cache repeated C++ compilation with ccache and reuse the LAMMPS source in CI. Merge current master to retain its PyTorch C++20 build support.
The Read the Docs build also timed out during Sphinx execution (build 35462613); local diagnosis reproduced stalled external inventory requests. Set a 30-second connection/read-inactivity timeout so Sphinx can warn and continue when a host stops responding. This is not a deadline for a complete inventory download or the entire build.
