Motivation

The custom inference compiler entry in sezm_model.py calls
compile_fx_inner(fx_gm, fx_inputs) without the is_inference flag.
torch.compile's own default path already passes is_inference=True
through its inference compiler (see compile_fx's
inference_compiler = functools.partial(fw_compiler_base, is_inference=True)).
This PR makes the custom entry match that behavior for eval graphs;
training graphs are unchanged (is_inference=not self.training).

Where the peak-memory saving actually comes from (corrected during
review — the original text attributed it to pooled memory planning):
with the default configuration (TORCHINDUCTOR_MEMORY_PLANNING unset),
memory_plan is never called for either flag value and the generated
wrapper is byte-identical. The flag's only observable effect there is
enabling Inductor's reorder_for_locality pass on the inference graph,
which shortens intermediate live ranges; that reordering is what the
measurements below capture. With explicit memory planning enabled,
is_inference=True is additionally what switches memory_plan_reuse()
to memory_plan().

Change

One-line semantic change plus a comment in
deepmd/pt/model/model/sezm_model.py::_inductor_inference_compiler.

Measurements

SeZM model, N=4096 atoms (~646k edges), RTX 5090, torch 2.12.1+cu130,
DP_COMPILE_INFER=1, throughput mode (16 evals, P50):

build per-eval (ms) peak VRAM alloc (MB)
master (5b9fe07) 153.5 23935
this PR 154.0 (+0.5, noise) 22865 (−1070 MB, −4.5%)

Accuracy (same input, master vs this PR, compiled eval): energy rel diff
2.2e-10; max force diff 4.5e-6 with max |f| ~ 3.9 — outputs agree to
rounding level; this is a scheduling-only change.

The gain grows when more of the peak is scheduler-visible intermediates:
on a heavier memory-optimized kernel stack the same flag measures −12.5%
peak VRAM (23647→20696 MB), and −13.9% on an H800.

Tests

  • source/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm.py on this branch, default
    configuration: 61 passed, 122 subtests passed.
  • test_eval_compile_pins_is_inference_on_the_inference_slot (d52a4ca)
    spies on compile_fx_inner with the compile caches disabled and
    asserts the eval slot lowers with is_inference=True; a control run
    with the flag dropped turns the test red.
  • ruff check / format clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved model compilation during evaluation by using inference-specific handling. Training compilation behavior remains unchanged, and existing compilation options are preserved. Evaluation and training continue to follow their respective compilation workflows, supporting consistent behavior across both modes. This helps evaluation runs use the appropriate compilation behavior without changing how models are compiled during training.

The custom inference compiler entry calls compile_fx_inner without the
is_inference flag, so Inductor plans memory under training assumptions:
outputs are allocated early and autograd-visible intermediates stay
alive. torch.compile's own default path passes is_inference=True through
its inference compiler; this change matches that for the eval graph
(training keeps False). Scheduling-only change: outputs agree to
rounding level.

Measured at N=4096 (SeZM eval compile, DP_COMPILE_INFER=1):
peak VRAM -12.5% (23647 -> 20696 MB, RTX 5090); independently -13.9% on
an H800 baseline.

Walkthrough

The SeZM eval compiler callback now calls compile_fx_inner with is_inference=True. A compile-gated regression test checks that the inference flag reaches the lowering call. Training continues to use a separate torch.compile path.

Reviewed the exact one-file diff and its inference/training integration. No new actionable correctness defect found.

The flag is appropriate for this specific graph, rather than being justified by .eval() alone: make_fx has already materialized edge_energy_deriv's energy-to-edge/spin derivatives and force/virial assembly, with create_graph=False. Both aot_module_simplified lowering and compiled eval execution are inside torch.no_grad(). Training uses the separate torch.compile branch with create_graph=True, and the cache distinguishes training/eval. The changed callback therefore does not suppress the first derivatives needed to return forces or alter force-loss double-backward training.

Checked upstream compile_fx_inner and default inference dispatch in PyTorch tags 2.11.0, 2.12.1 and 2.13.0, covering this repository's compile allowlist: all accept is_inference and propagate it to lowering; default inference dispatch supplies True.

Validation remains incomplete. The reported default test_descriptor_sezm.py run does not establish compiled-model coverage. Please run the existing TestSeZMModelCompile eval cache/shape-change and first-frame tests in test_sezm_model.py, plus its force-loss double-backward test, on a supported PyTorch build. The standard CUDA workflow currently pins torch 2.10.0, which skips these compile tests, so a green CUDA badge alone would not establish this coverage.

At 11:00 UTC, the exact-head test/build/CodeQL workflows report action_required and have not provided test results; pre-commit passed and Read the Docs failed. I ran source/AST checks only: PyTorch is not installed in this review environment, and I did not reproduce the GPU parity or memory measurements.

Following the review, ran the requested compile coverage on this branch head (1e3e40c), on a supported build with CUDA available (RTX 5090, torch 2.12.1+cu130):

  • source/tests/pt/model/test_sezm_model.py::TestSeZMModelCompile: 9 passed (0:09:35) — including test_eval_compile_first_frame_nloc_matches_trace_edge_count, test_compile_cache_slots_and_eval_shape_change, test_eval_compile_policy, and test_forward_backward_double_backward_matches_compile (the force-loss double backward).

For completeness, also on this branch:

  • source/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm.py default configuration: 61 passed / 122 subtests.
  • Two-state accuracy at N=4096, compiled eval (master vs this branch, same input): energy rel diff 2.2e-10; max force diff 4.5e-6 with max |f| ~ 3.9.

@OutisLi @wanghan-iapcm @njzjz requesting a review, please. Following the 2026-10-13 discussion we validated the combined stack of our six performance PRs (#6056, #6057, #6060, #6070, #6071, #6072) with a multi-scale gate: diamond + bcc-Cu at ~500 / ~2000 / ~4400 atoms, three columns (pure torch.compile with all custom kernels off / current master / our changes on). All accuracy cells sit within 2.2x the pure baseline's own run-to-run band (criterion: 3x), and no tested atom count regresses in time or memory — full numbers in the PR descriptions. Suggested review order for the six: #6056 -> #6057 -> #6060 (small and self-contained) -> #6070 -> #6071 -> #6072.

Verified at head 1e3e40c (torch 2.11.0+cpu, CPU only):

  • _inductor_inference_compiler is only reached from the eval branch (aot_module_simplified under torch.no_grad()), so the new kwarg is always is_inference=True; the training graph still goes through torch.compile and is unaffected.
  • With the flag, Inductor's post-grad reorder_for_locality pass now runs on the eval graph (instrumented: it runs on this head and does not run on the parent commit); config.memory_planning stays off, and reorder_for_peak_memory=False from build_inductor_compile_options(inference=True) is still applied.
  • compile_fx_inner accepts is_inference as a keyword in torch 2.11 (checked locally; it defaults to False).
  • Local runs: TestSeZMModelCompile 9 passed; TestSeZMEmbeddingForward::test_compiled_matches_eager and TestSeZMSpinModel::test_compile_matches_eager passed. Compiled eval matches eager for energy, force and virial on the tiny test system.
  • The CPU CI jobs install torch 2.11.0+cpu, so the compile tests in test_sezm_model.py ran in CI and passed. The VRAM reduction was not reproduced here because no GPU was available.

One non-blocking clarity suggestion for _inductor_inference_compiler in deepmd/pt/model/model/sezm_model.py:2370-2388: please express this callback's inference-only contract directly with is_inference=True.

The callback is defined only in the evaluation branch, and aot_module_simplified is invoked under torch.no_grad(). Training takes the separate torch.compile branch above. Consequently, not self.training adds a dependency on mutable model state where the graph's inference-only role already determines the value. The added sentence about the training graph keeping False also suggests that training passes through this callback, which it does not.

Please keep the hardware-specific memory measurements and before/after validation results in the PR description rather than in the implementation comment. A short explanation that this callback lowers the forward-only AOTAutograd inference graph is sufficient release-grade documentation.

No functional blocker found in this change. Local validation: 61 tests and 122 subtests passed; actual CPU Inductor inference matched eager energy, force, and virial for 3- and 5-atom inputs; the evaluation cache remained usable after a train/eval switch; training backward produced finite gradients for 82 parameters. GPU memory savings were not independently measured.

Thank you both for the reviews!

@wanghan-iapcm thanks for the verification and approval.

@OutisLi addressed in 31067de: the callback now states its contract directly with is_inference=True, and the implementation comment is reduced to a short description (measurements stay in the PR description only). Both of your points about the misleading training-graph sentence are correct — the callback only exists in the eval branch, so the mutable-state dependency is gone.

Validation on my side (CUDA, torch 2.12.1+cu130): TestSeZMModelCompile passes at the new head. For the record, two tests fail identically on the parent commit in my local environment (test_eval_compile_policy, TestSeZMModelBridging::test_change_out_bias_is_invariant_for_self_labels) — they appear environment-specific (your local run and CI are CPU/torch-2.11) and are untouched by this diff.

## Review follow-up: focused regression scope (2026-10-19)

Addressing [OutisLi's requested
changes](deepmodeling#6058 (review)).
The production implementation is unchanged from `7cfd926b`; this
follow-up changes **only the test file**. No new inference level,
autotuning, performance study, production-size benchmark or full-model
GPU test suite was added.

| Coverage contract | Current cases | Mapping |
|---|---:|---|
| Numerical/reference, shapes, caller-input preservation | 7 | The
suggested representative list retains all five shape profiles, both
alpha modes, empty/partial edges, zero/one/multiple gated layers and
narrow/BMM paths |
| Workspace identity | 4 | Unchanged function: all with_weights/keep
pairs; final out-of-place; gz/output always distinct |
| Dtype/alpha versus separate buffers | 6 | Unchanged function and
tolerances: FP32/FP16/BF16 × alpha on/off |
| Actual autograd dispatch | 6 | Trainable/partially frozen/frozen
weights × create_graph=False/True; mocked gradient operators test
selection only |
| Saved-output cotangent dispatch | 2 | Frozen inputs with a cotangent
on z or the final activation must use the protected training path |
| Unique frozen direct-stack derivative numerics | 1 | One small FP32
force-loss case checks output, first derivative and second-order
objective gradients; no optimizer loop or width cross-product |
| **Total** | **26** | 17 core + 8 dispatch guards + 1 numerical
higher-order check |

Existing
`TestSeZMModelCompile.test_forward_backward_double_backward_matches_compile`
covers ordinary model-level parameter gradients, force loss and short
training;
`TestSeZMTrainPathParity.test_training_step_matches_the_dense_path`
covers descriptor/training binding parity. Those do not automatically
establish the fully frozen **direct-stack** force-loss path, so one
representative numerical check remains. The six new dispatch cases
execute real `torch.autograd.grad(..., create_graph=...)`; their mocked
gradient operators are not presented as numerical training-equivalence
evidence.

Fresh validation: **26 CUDA tests passed**; with no visible GPU **26
skipped**. The retained ownership guard still fails at its
residual/output alias assertion when the exact baseline traversal is
substituted in an isolated diagnostic process. Both retained guard/dtype
functions are AST-identical to the previous head. Full-repository Ruff
check/format and whitespace checks passed; production source is
byte-for-byte unchanged.

Local CUDA coverage executes the three new statements (lines 3199–3201
at this revision), including both outcomes of the line-3200 guard. This
is **not** a claim that upstream Codecov/required checks are green. No
CI configuration or coverage exclusions were changed. Please verify GPU
execution and the uploaded coverage in the new upstream runs.

The 106-case counts, full-model measurements and multi-step training
evidence below are **historical pre-review results**, not newly rerun
tests or performance claims for this follow-up.

## Summary

Reuse the internally owned residual-gradient workspace in the SO2
mixing-stack
backward traversal when neither weight gradients nor saved per-layer
state are
needed. This removes one edge-sized allocation without changing kernel
arithmetic, model parameters, precision settings or public APIs.

This is an isolated workspace change. It does not include compiler
scheduling
passes, the inference-compiler flag from deepmodeling#6056, additional fusion,
checkpoint
changes, or local benchmark infrastructure.

## Why the alias is safe

The gated-layer backward GEMM computes `residual + gz @ W.T`. Its matrix
input
`gz` remains separate from the output. Each output tile reads only its
matching
residual elements before writing those same locations; distinct programs
do not
read one another's residual tiles. The final-layer GEMM remains
out-of-place.

Only buffers allocated inside this traversal are reused. Caller inputs
and
forward-saved tensors are not mutated, so the operator's
`mutates_args=()`
contract is unchanged. The weight-gradient and saved-state traversals
keep their
original allocation paths. The guard uses actual gradient/state
requirements,
not simply `model.eval()`, which matters for frozen-weight and
force-loss cases.

The generated full-model graph was checked as well: four gated GEMM
calls alias
residual/output, while both final-layer calls and every
matrix-input/output pair
remain separate.

## Scope

- `deepmd/pt_expt/kernels/triton/sezm/so2_value_path.py`: local
allocation change
  and the alias-safety explanation.
- `source/tests/pt_expt/kernels/test_so2_workspace.py`: generated-input
CUDA
  regressions, with no checkpoint or machine-specific dependencies.

The current focused tests cover the contracts mapped in the review
follow-up above.
They retain the allocation-identity baseline-fails/candidate-passes
assertion,
unchanged dtype/alpha checks and tolerances, lightweight
autograd-dispatch checks,
and one numerical frozen-weight force-loss case rather than repeated
updates.

4096 atoms; two for 1000. Timing values below are medians of process
quantiles;
memory values are the maximum measured peaks. GB means 1e9 bytes.

This is a memory optimization, not a claim of significant speedup. The
small
observed 1000-atom latency increase is disclosed rather than classified
as a
speed improvement. The 4096-atom allocation reduction is exactly
1,656,755,200
bytes, matching one `[2, 647170, 320]` FP32 workspace. First-call
compilation is
excluded from steady timing but included in the full memory window. GPU
clocks
were not locked, and these short research runs are not a long-duration
performance acceptance test.

## Numerical validation and limitations

Full-model comparison uses all energy, force, virial and stress elements
with
finite-value checks and `abs(actual-reference) <= 1e-5 +
1e-4*abs(reference)`.

- 1000 atoms: candidate versus same-round compiled base passes in both
independent processes; all 10 three-frame self-repeatability rounds
pass.
- 4096 atoms: all 3 candidate-versus-base comparisons pass, but strict
self-repeatability is not universally satisfied: candidate 6/15 and base
9/15 rounds pass. The failed checks are the third frame's virial.
Baseline
cross-process comparisons also fail that component in both repeat runs.
No tolerance was relaxed and no output was excluded. These observations
do
not establish either a fix or a regression in global numerical
determinism.

An additional independent dense eager GPU reference, with compilation
and
Triton/CUDA fast paths disabled, also passes for both 1000-atom
candidate runs
and both base runs at the same elementwise thresholds. This was one
three-frame
reference evaluation, not an exhaustive determinism test.

## Historical local test evidence (before the focused-test revision)

- New workspace regressions: **106 passed** on CUDA.
- Full-repository Ruff check and format check: passed.
- Project-configured pre-commit hooks for both changed files: all
applicable
  hooks passed.
- Patch whitespace check and clean application to the base: passed.
- Original model/descriptor/training-path regressions: **87 passed, 5
skipped,
127 subtests passed**. All nine `TestSeZMModelCompile` tests passed. The
five
skips require DPA4 native CUDA operators absent from the installed
library.
- Red/green: the unmodified base fails the allocation-identity assertion
as
  expected; the candidate passes.
- NVIDIA Compute Sanitizer memcheck: four alias/guard cases passed, **0
errors**.
- CPU native tabulation forward/backward/second-order smoke: **6
passed**.
- GPU native tabulation smoke: **2 failed on both base and candidate**,
because
the installed customized-op library was built without GPU support. This
is
an environment limitation, not a passing test or a newly introduced
failure.
- Without a visible GPU the new file collects normally and skips 106
tests.

The local source-selection harness used the new Python checkout with
existing
native libraries from the measured environment. This does not claim a
fresh
C++/wheel build or TensorFlow/JAX/Paddle validation. Other GPU
architectures and
Torch 2.12/2.13 are not locally validated here. A CUDA-native rebuild is
needed
to cover the missing native paths; this PR does not claim that every
local
or required CI check is green.

## Historical additional cross-checkout training equivalence

Separate BASE and candidate processes, identical generated
inputs/initialization,
TF32 disabled, same GPU/environment:

| Path | Cases / updates per case | Compared |
|---|---|---|
| Direct mixing stack, widths 32 and 96, all / partially frozen / frozen
weights | 6 cases, 5 AdamW steps each | output, force-loss second
derivatives, gradients, updated parameters, step counters and moments |
| Actual SeZM model, dense eager | 3 SGD + momentum steps |
energy/force/virial loss, gradients, updated parameters and optimizer
state |
| Actual SeZM model, eager Triton training level 1 | 3 SGD + momentum
steps | same |
| Actual SeZM model, default dense compiled training | 3 SGD + momentum
steps | same |

**2516/2516 finite arrays pass** the same `atol=1e-5, rtol=1e-4`
elementwise comparison. 1384 arrays are bitwise identical; global
maximum
absolute difference is **3.725290298461914e-9**; maximum error/tolerance
ratio is
**0.0003452008823**. This is bounded multi-step equivalence evidence,
not a
claim that arbitrary long training is bitwise identical.

The normal `model.train()` route is excluded from this inference stack
by
the existing `not self.training` guard in `so2.py`. Direct-stack
force-loss
tests additionally cover trainable, partially frozen and frozen
operands:
observed backward calls requiring weight gradients retain separate
workspace,
and calls saving second-order state retain the saved-state path. No
public
training flags or APIs change.

An additional tiny-model configuration combining Triton training with
compilation
triggered a Torch 2.11 Inductor `replace_by_example` pattern-matcher
assertion
on the **unmodified BASE**. The final comparison therefore explicitly
separates
eager Triton training from default compiled training, rather than
claiming that
combined configuration passed. Candidate equivalence for that failing
BASE
configuration is not established. The installed native library also
lacks CUDA
operators; local CUDA toolkit 13.2 does not match this Torch cu128
build, and a
fresh matching-toolkit CUDA build remains for CI/a suitable environment.

## Reproduction / reviewer requests

Run the new test file using the normal project installation. It
generates all
operands and does not download a model. Also run the original
`TestSeZMModelCompile`, `TestSeZMTritonValuePath`, descriptor and
training-path
regressions. The commands and standalone scripts below provide
reproduction without
committing machine-specific benchmark infrastructure.

The exact checkpoint is `DPA4-Neo-OMat24-v20260627.pt`, SHA256
`8d8b2b02b9575cb9e0af420cc1e8b1d9ffcbc04752c2203d29f48ccd0cd5f07d`;
it is not bundled. Exact full-model numbers require an authorized copy.

Please trigger the upstream CUDA workflow and verify that relevant
compile
tests actually run rather than skip under the workflow's Torch version.
Local
results do not replace required status checks, maintainer review, or the
merge
queue.

## Reproducible commands

Install each revision following the project's CUDA/PyTorch build
instructions
in separate environments, then verify `deepmd.__file__` and
`torch.__version__`. Do not accidentally import another editable
checkout.
Tests below need no checkpoint:

```bash
CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=0 OMP_NUM_THREADS=1 python -m pytest -q \
  source/tests/pt_expt/kernels/test_so2_workspace.py
CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=0 OMP_NUM_THREADS=1 python -m pytest -q \
  source/tests/pt/model/test_sezm_model.py::TestSeZMModelCompile \
  source/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm_triton.py::TestSeZMTritonValuePath \
  source/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm_train_paths.py \
  source/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm.py
ruff check .
ruff format --check .
prek run --files deepmd/pt_expt/kernels/triton/sezm/so2_value_path.py \
  source/tests/pt_expt/kernels/test_so2_workspace.py
CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=0 compute-sanitizer --tool memcheck --error-exitcode 86 \
  python -m pytest -q \
  source/tests/pt_expt/kernels/test_so2_workspace.py::test_reuse_only_without_weights_or_saved_state
```

Memcheck does not prove absence of all global-memory races; see the
tile-level
read/write argument above.

For full-model reproduction, save the following script outside the
repository.
Run serially on an otherwise idle GPU, with a fresh output directory and
cache
for every invocation. With BASE installed/imported first:

```bash
CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=0 MODEL=/path/to/authorized/model.pt OUTPUT=/scratch/base-r0 \
  TORCHINDUCTOR_CACHE_DIR=/scratch/cache-base-r0 NREP=8 \
  python /scratch/public_benchmark.py
# Switch to the candidate environment/checkout:
CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=0 MODEL=/path/to/authorized/model.pt OUTPUT=/scratch/candidate-r0 \
  TORCHINDUCTOR_CACHE_DIR=/scratch/cache-candidate-r0 NREP=8 \
  REFERENCE=/scratch/base-r0/outputs.npz python /scratch/public_benchmark.py
```

Repeat 3 processes for `NREP=8` (4096 atoms), 2 for `NREP=5` (1000
atoms),
using different paths; interleave/reverse order when repeating. Inspect
every
JSON comparison and finite check. This portable script reproduces normal
API
timing/memory and cross-revision checks; the reported main experiment
additionally
ran five three-frame self-repeatability rounds per process and audited
generated
wrappers. Those extra diagnostics are not implemented by this short
script.
Do not use `torch.inference_mode()`: conservative force evaluation needs
differentiation. No private compiler hooks are needed for this change.

Current default-branch rules require seven check contexts (C++ tests,
C++ build,
C-library build, Python tests, wheel builds, CUDA aggregate,
pre-commit.ci),
at least one approval, resolved threads, and the squash merge queue.
The CUDA workflow needs maintainer activation (e.g. the `Test CUDA`

a passing aggregate with skipped GPU jobs is not CUDA validation. Please
also
check Torch-version gates on compile tests. No claim is made that local
tests
replace these server-side requirements.

Change is correct and safe at this call site. I re-checked the two things that decide that.

The callback exists only in the eval branch, so is_inference=True cannot reach a training graph from here: training still goes through torch.compile at line 2271, and the cache key includes bool(self.training), so an inference-labelled artifact is never handed to a training slot. The remaining question was whether AOTAutograd could still take the autograd partition and send a forward (and, by the bw_compiler default, a backward) graph through this callback. I instrumented aot_module_simplified with distinguishable compilers over the same call shape the model uses -- make_fx symbolic trace, node.meta["val"] example inputs, torch.no_grad() -- across create_graph true/false and inputs that do and do not require grad. Only the inference compiler was ever invoked: the traced outputs do not require grad, so output_and_mutation_safe downgrades needs_autograd. A control module with a plain differentiable input did select fw, so the machinery works; this call site just never reaches it.

Two non-blocking notes.

Nothing pins the flag. The eval-compile tests assert a cache slot and eager parity to 1e-6, both of which hold with is_inference=True, with False, and with the argument absent -- the flagless call coexisted with the same tests before this PR. A future refactor could remove the argument and reinstate the peak-memory cost with the suite green. Mocking deepmd.pt.model.model.sezm_model.compile_fx_inner and asserting is_inference is True for the eval slot would close it.

One correction to the description's mechanism, worth making so the next reader measures the right thing. is_inference only reaches Inductor's pooled memory planner when config.memory_planning is enabled, and that config is off by default (TORCHINDUCTOR_MEMORY_PLANNING unset). Executing compile_fx_inner on the installed torch with the repo's option set: with memory planning off, memory_plan is not called for either flag value and the generated wrapper code is byte-identical; with it on, is_inference=True is what flips memory_plan_reuse() to memory_plan(). In the default configuration the flag's only observable effect is enabling reorder_for_locality in the post-grad passes, which runs once with the flag and never without. So the measured saving is real but does not come from pooled planning -- likely from that reordering pass shortening live ranges. The repo's option dict deliberately disables reorder_for_peak_memory for this hint-less graph, so enabling a different reordering pass is worth knowing about explicitly.

Minor: the head commit is a merge whose subject is the unedited default merge message.

The cache-slot and eager-parity checks hold with the flag set, cleared,
or absent, so a refactor could drop the argument and reinstate the
peak-memory cost with the suite green. The new test spies on
torch._inductor.compile_fx.compile_fx_inner (the import happens at call
time) with the compile caches disabled, and asserts the eval slot lowers
through is_inference=True. Dropping the flag in a control run turns the
test red.

Thank you for the deep re-verification and the correction — both non-blocking notes are addressed in d52a4ca (rebased on top of the master merge).

Flag pinning. test_eval_compile_pins_is_inference_on_the_inference_slot spies on torch._inductor.compile_fx.compile_fx_inner (the import happens at call time, so the source module is the patch target) with TORCHINDUCTOR_FX_GRAPH_CACHE=0 and TORCHINDUCTOR_AUTOGRAD_CACHE=0 to keep the lowering observable, and asserts the eval slot lowers with is_inference=True. A control run with the flag dropped turns the test red, so the pin is not vacuous.

Mechanism corrected in the description. The pooled-planning attribution is replaced with your finding: with the default configuration memory_plan is never called for either flag value and the wrapper is byte-identical; the saving comes from is_inference enabling the reorder_for_locality pass, which shortens live ranges. The explicit-planning behavior (memory_plan_reuse → memory_plan) is noted as the flag's additional effect only when planning is enabled. The description now also records that this repo deliberately disables reorder_for_peak_memory, so the reader knows the reordering in play is a different pass.

On the merge-commit subject: the branch head is now that merge plus the rebased test commit; I left the history untouched rather than rewriting an approved branch.

Restore the skip decorator on test_compile_cache_slots_and_eval_shape_change.

This PR moves the @unittest.skipIf(_SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH, ...) decorator from the existing compile-parity test to the new test. The new test now has the decorator twice, and test_compile_cache_slots_and_eval_shape_change has none. The file states that compile-parity test gating must match the SUPPORTED_COMPILE_TORCH allowlist. On torch releases outside 2.11, 2.12, and 2.13, the existing test now runs instead of skipping, and it may fail there. Torch 2.11 is in the allowlist, so CI runs the test with or without this change.

Suggested fix

Remove the duplicate decorator from the new test:

     @unittest.skipIf(_SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH, _SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH_REASON)
-    @unittest.skipIf(_SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH, _SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH_REASON)
     def test_eval_compile_pins_is_inference_on_the_inference_slot(self) -> None:

Restore the decorator on the existing test:

+    @unittest.skipIf(_SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH, _SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH_REASON)
     def test_compile_cache_slots_and_eval_shape_change(self) -> None:

In the test class, remove the duplicate skip decorator from
test_eval_compile_pins_is_inference_on_the_inference_slot and restore one
@unittest.skipIf(_SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH, _SKIP_OFF_COMPILE_TORCH_REASON)
decorator on test_compile_cache_slots_and_eval_shape_change so compile-parity
gating remains aligned with the supported Torch versions.
