Summary

Follow-up to organization commits (#938). The moderators' Bulk page flags accounts that starred or replied to an unusual number of different people. A star or reply on an organization's commit was counted as reaching the member who posted it. It now counts as reaching the organization, its author.

Example: starring 30 commits that 30 different members posted as @laravel used to count as reaching 30 people. Now it counts as reaching one profile, @laravel.

Changes

  • BulkActivityQuery, stars and replies: "reach" counts the distinct authors of the commits starred or replied to (commits.author_id), instead of whoever posted them (commits.user_id).
    • Newcomers: they are still people who signed up in the window. An organization is never one.
    • Replying to yourself: a reply to your own personal commit still doesn't count.
    • Personal commits: nothing changes, since their author is the person who posted them.
  • Follows and posts: they still count what the account itself did, as before.

Limitations

  • The page still says "starred N people" and "replied to N people", even though an organization can now be one of them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Star and reply activity is attributed to the commit author, including organizations, rather than the account that created the commit.
    • Activity on commits without an author contributes to star and reply counts but does not increase reach.
    • Replies by a commit’s author to their own commit are excluded from reply activity.
    • Reach and newcomer counts reflect distinct commit authors, with newcomers counted when they joined during the reporting period.

… the organization, not the member who posted them

Walkthrough

Bulk activity queries now attribute star and reply reach to commit authors rather than commit posters. Newcomer counts use author signup dates. Tests cover organization-authored commits and commits with null authors.

Author-based reach aggregation

Star and reply reach and newcomer counts use commit authors. Left joins retain activity rows without matching author users, and reply self-exclusion compares author IDs. Tests cover organization-authored commits and activity on commits with null authors.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to a2acc

The changed aggregation behavior has no established merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to a2acc

The change corrects moderation statistics without expanding access or moderation authority. The page remains admin-only, results still identify the account performing the activity, and moderation actions remain explicitly operator-triggered.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The effective exposure is the existing admin moderation queue: user activity can change displayed metrics and candidate inclusion, but the change does not create a new access path or give author profiles moderation privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The SQL retains bound parameters, actor grouping, bot exclusions, time filtering, thresholds, and result limits. The page displays the aggregates and offers an explicit moderation menu for the acting user rather than automatically applying a privileged action.

Cover the organization reply path with a threshold-level fixture.

The replies assertion passes whether organization commits count as one reach or zero. The fan replies to 30 organization-authored commits, so reply reach is 1 with attribution and 0 without it. Both values are below REPLIED_PEOPLE_A_DAY (20), so toBe([]) cannot detect a regression that drops the organization from reply reach. A replier who reaches 19 personal authors plus the organization reaches exactly 20 only when the organization counts.

Update the organization-authored commit fixture in the “counts stars and
replies” test to verify reply reach at the 20-person threshold: have a replier
reply to commits from 19 personal authors and one organization-authored commit,
then assert one reply activity row for that replier with reach 20. Replace the
empty replies assertion while preserving the existing stars assertions.

`c.author_id IS NOT NULL` condition so stars on commits from deleted
organizations remain included, and use `p.author_id IS DISTINCT FROM r.user_id`
for replies so null authors are handled correctly while distinct reach counts
continue to ignore them.
