fix: count links in poll options as the body counts them - #1381
Poll options are limited to 50 characters, so a pasted link like https://github.com/dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh/pull/1366 (52 characters) got truncated by the editor. Links in an option now count as at most 23 characters, as they already do in a commit's body, so an option still reads short but can hold a link.
Changes
CommitBodyLength takes an optional max and checks each poll option against 50, with links counted like the body (Urls::characterCount). The raw cap is 50 + 2048, the longest link allowed.
A migration changes poll_options.label from varchar(50) to text.
Validation messages name the option ("The option 2 field must not be greater than 50 characters.") in the four requests that accept a poll: web, API and both scheduled ones.
The editor no longer truncates at 50. It measures each option with bodyCharacterCount, shows the same error, and the composer waits until every option fits.
CreateCommitTest relied on the old column limit to make a save fail; it now makes it fail explicitly, as DatabaseSeederTest does.
Validation
New and updated tests in CommitPollsTest, Api/CommitControllerTest and PollOptionInput.test.tsx: a link is accepted and stored intact, exactly 50 counted characters pass, 51 fail, an oversized link fails, and the messages match on both sides.
Full PHP suite run serially (pest --no-tia): 5384 passed.
node --test tests/Unit/*.test.ts: 222 passed. vp test run --config tests/draft-images.config.ts: 835 passed.
Code coverage could not be measured locally (no coverage driver); left to CI.
Visual evidence
Composer with a poll, the same text typed in both versions: option 1 is the link, option 2 is "Later". Desktop, 900px wide at 2x, Chrome, local app with seeded data. Before is production at f7aa5e97, after is this branch at 68412cd2.
Light
Dark
Before: the link is cut at …/pull/13
After: the full link is kept
After: an option still too long (74 counted characters) shows the error and disables Commit
In the last row the one-line field scrolls to the caret, so the start of the text is out of view; the full text is kept. The error line pushes the rest of the editor down, as any inline error does.
Device verification
Not tested on a phone. The change is in how options are measured; the inputs and their layout are the same as before.

Reviewed by a separate read-only agent on base f7aa5e97, head 68412cd2: CODE: PASS (on the change, the CreateCommitTest rewrite, and the message and boundary follow-up), then VISUAL: PASS on the six captures above. It checked server/client parity (code spans, trailing punctuation), the scheduled-commit path, and that nothing else assumes labels of 50 characters or less.
Limitations
No mobile capture, and no capture of an option being shortened back under the limit.
The client test checks a clearly too long option; the exact 50/51 boundary is covered on the server.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Poll options can now include links while keeping the 50-character limit based on link-aware counting: each link counts as up to 23 characters. Links longer than 2,048 characters are not accepted.
Bug Fixes
Poll option errors now identify the option by its position, making validation messages easier to understand.
The poll editor now flags options that exceed the link-aware length limit before submission.
A poll option was cut at 50 characters, so a GitHub link to a pull request didn't fit. Links now count as at most 23 characters towards an option's 50, as in a commit's body, and the label column becomes text to hold them. Validation messages name the option instead of its array key.
The editor no longer truncates an option at 50 characters. It measures each option like the server does and shows the same error, and the composer waits until every option fits.

Walkthrough
Poll option validation now counts links as up to 23 characters. Server and client validation allow raw input up to 2,098 characters while enforcing a measured limit of 50. Poll option labels use a text column, and validation errors identify options by position.

The server accepts raw option text up to the configured limit and measures options with the link-aware character count. Poll option labels use a text column. Validation labels identify options by position. Tests cover length limits, error labels, and commit cleanup after a save failure.
The editor allows raw input up to 2,098 characters and reports an error when the measured length exceeds 50. The composer blocks polls with empty or overlong options. Tests cover the updated limit and link-aware validation.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 68412
A malformed poll option can produce a server error, and pasting two long links can silently save a changed destination. Address these cases before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 68412
Longer poll labels remain subject to server-side length checks and use the existing publication and rendering paths. No material security regression was established in the inspected flows. Deployment ordering and recovery for the database widening remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure increase is longer user-authored poll content reaching existing storage and content consumers. The traced change does not establish a new credential, tenant-selection, or privileged execution channel; its fanout is primarily propagation of the same content contract.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Poll labels use the existing body-segment and linkification path. URL matching recognizes HTTP(S) URLs and configured bare domains; href generation adds HTTPS to bare domains and rejects oversized destinations. The ordinary external-link branch renders React elements with noopener, noreferrer, nofollow, and ugc relations. These controls predate this PR and remain applicable to longer labels.

Do not truncate over-limit pasted URLs.
The raw limit intentionally allows one longest URL plus the 50-character measured limit. Do not increase it only to support two URLs.
However, MentionTextarea truncates input with limitCharacters. Two recognized 1,120-character URLs separated by a space count as 47 characters, but the second URL is cut at the 2,098-character raw limit. The shortened URL remains valid and can pass server validation, so the poll can save a different destination.
When the raw limit is exceeded, preserve the pasted value and reject it with a validation error instead of truncating it.

Stop validation before the string-only rule on invalid option types.
If an API caller submits poll.options: ["Tabs", ["Spaces"]], string fails but Laravel can still run CommitBodyLength. That rule expects a string, so the request produces a server error instead of a validation response. Add bail before required so a failed type check stops validation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
