I have a question about this item, it was merged in July and should have made it in an older DWO version if I'm not mistaken? Was there a reason to add this in the 1.0 changelog?

Actually, I was also thinking the same thing when I saw for the first time , but when I checked, we released DWO on 29 Jul https://github.com/devfile/devworkspace-operator/releases/tag/v0.43.0 and this PR got merged on 30 Jul

Correct, as Rohan pointed out, 1677 was merged on July 30th, one day after the completion of 0.43.0.
