  • Output sent to a file. When a background command sends its output to one file, such as make > build.log 2>&1 or pytest 2>&1 | tee test.log, Downrange now reads that file too. Progress, the ETA, and the last line come from it, and the row notes output: build.log. At each read, the row shows the file that changed last: Claude Code's output file or the redirect file. Before, such a job showed no progress and no last line, because Claude Code's own output file stayed empty.
  • Downrange follows only one literal file that the command's own text names, in a plain list of commands joined by ;, &&, a new line, or a pipe. It follows no file for a path with a variable or a pattern, a path under /dev, a command with a function, a condition, a loop, a group, a subshell, &, or nohup, or a relative path after a folder change. docs/usage.md lists every case.
  • The end state and the exit code still come from Claude Code's notification. A line such as exit=1 in the file shows as the last line only.
  • Docs: nohup alone does not end a job at once; a command that ends with & does, and Claude Code then sees the job end. The privacy section names each file that Downrange reads.

Update: claude plugin update downrange@downrange, then start a new session or run /reload-plugins.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Shell job progress and recent output can now come from supported command output-redirection files. When both the redirect file and Claude Code’s output file are available, the most recently updated file is displayed.
    • Job rows identify the redirect file when it is being read.
  • Documentation

    • Updated usage guidance and troubleshooting for redirect-file support, including supported cases, limitations, and read failures.
    • Updated the displayed version to 1.1.2.

📝 Walkthrough

Shell jobs can now use a supported command redirect file as a source of output and progress. The hook parses and resolves redirect targets, reads eligible files, selects displayed output, and records the active source. Job rows can identify redirect output, and documentation describes the supported cases and limits.

Changes: Shell Redirect Output Tracking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and resolve redirect targets
hooks/redirect.ts, AGENTS.md
The redirect parser recognizes supported literal output targets and rejects unsupported or ambiguous command forms. It resolves eligible paths against a POSIX working directory.
Store redirect paths and select output
types/index.d.ts, hooks/state.ts, hooks/jobs.ts, hooks/register.tsx, AGENTS.md
Shell jobs can store a resolved redirect path. Output reading compares the job output file and redirect file, selects a source, and records read failures for the relevant file.
Track and display selected output
hooks/jobs.ts, hooks/output.ts, hooks/view.ts, .claude-plugin/plugin.json, README.md, docs/usage.md
Polling accounts for redirect-file size, source changes reset progress data, and rows can display the redirect basename. The documentation describes redirect behavior, exclusions, limits, and troubleshooting. The plugin version changes to 1.1.2.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3c314

A redirect file ending with an exit-marker-like line can show the wrong last line or progress. The impact is narrow and the change is mergeable with owner awareness or a localized fix.
