fix(gooddata-eval): assert alert comparison, title and dashboard - #1902
The agentic alert-skill evaluator (core/agentic/alert_skill.py) scored 9 checks and never compared three things the agent sends to create_metric_alert. So an alert that ignored part of the user's request still passed.
Title: exact match against the title argument. If the agent omits title (GDAI-2149: the backend then saves an auto-generated name), this fails even when automation_id carries the slug.
Dashboard: "Title (id)", a bare id, or dashboard_id, compared against the dashboard_id argument.
A stated title is also given to the simulated user. The dashboard is not, because finding it is the behaviour under test.
Status is not asserted: create_metric_alert has no status argument.
AlertEvaluation.checks() replaces the check list that was repeated in 5 places (strict_pass, best-run key, run detail, Langfuse scores, assertion message).
All three new checks are asserted only when the item states a value. If the key is absent or blank, the check is skipped, so the existing items are unaffected.
ruff format --check, ruff check, ty check --project packages/gooddata-eval packages/gooddata-eval/src: clean.
Every active item of agent_alert_skill, agent_alert_skill_ctx and globalmart_alert_skill (63) parses with the new normalizer; the new checks apply to exactly the 8 items that state them.
Live run against e2e-llm-static (gpt-5.6-luna, effort LOW, --runs 3, editable install of this branch). Each of the 3 items was run in both datasets: agent_alert_skill on ecommerce_demo_gpt56luna_openai_low, agent_alert_skill_ctx on ecommerce_demo_alert_ctx_gpt56luna_openai_low. Result: 18/18 runs passed, with title_correct, dashboard_correct and comparison_correct active.
alrt-gap-26 (title "QA margin watch qz7")
alrt-gap-35 (bind to the dashboard COGS is on → 2. Sales)
alrt-luna-25 (previous-period comparison)
The Langfuse items now carry the new keys. The gooddata-eval version pinned in gdc-nas ignores them until it is bumped.
Risk
low. This changes only the eval package's scoring, and only for items that opt in through the new expected keys. One consequence: once gdc-nas bumps the pin, alrt-gap-26 can go red on the intermittent product bug GDAI-2149 (about 1 in 20 runs). That is the intended signal.

Walkthrough
Alert fixtures now support comparison, title, and dashboard expectations. The evaluator normalizes these values, checks them against alert tool output, and includes stated checks in strict-pass evaluation, run scoring, diagnostics, and failure messages.
The evaluator checks stated comparison properties, exact titles, and dashboard IDs. The simulated-user prompt includes a title instruction when a title is stated. Tests cover normalization, matching, omitted expectations, and invalid inputs.
Strict-pass evaluation, best-run ranking, run details, and failure messages use the checks returned by checks(). Stated conditional checks require an alert tool call.

For a nonblank expected title, _check_title calls actual.strip(). A tool title with added leading or trailing whitespace therefore passes the exact-title check. Compare actual directly with the normalized expected title.
Suggested fix
- return isinstance(actual, str) and actual.strip() == expected.title+ return isinstance(actual, str) and actual == expected.title

The tool defaults are filled in whenever kind is not None, and that includes the METRIC kind inferred from compare_metric_id. A metric-to-metric alert has no periods, so comparison_periods_ago=1 and arithmetic_operator=DIFFERENCE should not be assumed for it.
Failure case: the fixture states Comparison: {"periods_ago": 1} and no kind. The agent hand-builds a "previous period" metric and sends only compare_metric_id. kind becomes METRIC, periods_ago defaults to 1, and comparison_correct passes. This is the hand-built-metric case QA-29243 means to close. Today only items that also state kind catch it (as _PREVIOUS_PERIOD_EXPECTATION does).
Suggestion: apply _COMPARISON_ARG_DEFAULTS only when kind is a period kind (PREVIOUS_PERIOD / SAME_PERIOD_PREVIOUS_YEAR). Add a test for {"periods_ago": 1} against {"compare_metric_id": "net_sales_previous_period"}, expecting False.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Thanks, the periods_ago part is right and fixed in 9a7a671: the periods_ago default of 1 now applies only to a period kind (PREVIOUS_PERIOD, SAME_PERIOD_PRIOR_YEAR; the enum is PRIOR_YEAR, not PREVIOUS_YEAR). test_a_metric_comparison_gets_no_periods_ago_default covers your case ({"periods_ago": 1} against compare_metric_id only, expecting False).
I kept the arithmetic_operator default for METRIC on purpose: create_metric_alert sets DIFFERENCE for every relative alert when it is omitted (automations_controller.py, if alert_type == "relative" and arithmetic_operator is None), metric-to-metric included. Dropping it there would fail an alert the server stores exactly as expected.

checks() returns every field, so every alert trace now gets title_correct, dashboard_correct and comparison_correct scores, including items that never state them. An unasserted check scores 1.0. On a refusal (no tool call) it scores 0.0.
Impact: 55 of the 63 alert items state no title, yet each one writes title_correct=1.0. Per-check pass rates in Langfuse are inflated by checks that never ran. A refusal also shows up as a title/dashboard/comparison failure on items with no such expectation. dashboard_skill and document_skill emit their conditional checks only when the case applies them.
Suggestion: emit (and gate on) a conditional check only when the item states its expectation. For example, have checks() take the expected alert and skip comparison_correct / title_correct / dashboard_correct when the matching field is None. Listing the check names explicitly instead of using asdict(self) also keeps a future non-bool field out of strict_pass.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, fixed in 89638b9. comparison_correct, title_correct and dashboard_correct are now None when the item states no such expectation. In that case they are not scored on the trace, not in the run detail and not gated, so an item without a title no longer logs title_correct=1, and a refusal no longer reads as a title/dashboard/comparison failure. checks() now builds from an explicit list of check names instead of asdict(self). test_a_refusal_fails_a_stated_title_and_reports_no_unstated_check covers the refusal case.
I left attributes_correct and granularity_correct as they were (always emitted) so their history in Langfuse stays comparable. Happy to move them to the same conditional scheme in a follow-up if you prefer.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
A Dashboard value with no trailing (id) is taken as the dashboard id itself. The docstring says the value is read like Metric, but a Metric value without (id) is left unasserted.
Failure case: an item written as "Dashboard": "2. Sales" (title only, which is the natural way to write it) sets expected.dashboard_id = "2. Sales". The agent sends the real dashboard_id, so dashboard_correct is False on every run and the item is permanently red. A title with its own trailing parentheses, such as "Sales (EMEA)", gets EMEA taken as the id.
The existing items are fine (alrt-gap-35 passed 18/18), so this only affects items written later. Suggestion: raise a ValueError when Dashboard has no (id) so the mistake surfaces before the run. Point authors to dashboard_id for a bare id.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, fixed in 89638b9: a Dashboard value without a trailing (id) now raises a ValueError before the run, and the message points to dashboard_id for a bare id (test_a_dashboard_without_an_id_fails_before_the_run). Existing items are unaffected: the only ones that state a dashboard use "2. Sales (<id>)".
The alert-skill evaluator never compared the period comparison, so an
alert created for "decreases by more than 15% compared with the previous
period" passed every check when the agent compared against the same
period a year ago, went back two periods, compared absolute values
instead of a percentage, or hand-built a "previous period" metric and
passed it as compare_metric_id.
expected_output gains an optional Comparison key, normalized onto
CatalogMetricAlert.comparison and checked by comparison_correct, which
joins strict_pass, the Langfuse scores and the run detail. It follows
the three-state convention of filters and attributes: an object asserts
the properties it states (kind, periods_ago, date_dataset_id,
date_attribute_id, arithmetic_operator), "None" asserts the alert has no
comparison at all, and an absent or empty value is not asserted, so
existing items are unaffected.
The actual arguments are read the way create_metric_alert resolves them:
a comparison_kind left out next to compare_metric_id is METRIC, and on
an alert that does compare, an omitted property counts as the tool's
default: arithmetic_operator DIFFERENCE on any comparison, periods_ago 1
only on a period comparison (PREVIOUS_PERIOD, SAME_PERIOD_PRIOR_YEAR).
A metric-to-metric comparison has no periods, so a hand-built "previous
period" metric cannot satisfy a stated periods_ago, and neither can an
alert with no comparison at all.
The comparison period (DAY, MONTH, ...) is not part of the check: it is
the granularity of the comparison date filter, which filters_correct
already asserts.

The alert-skill evaluator never compared the alert's name or the
dashboard it is bound to. An agent that dropped the requested title, so
that create_metric_alert saved an auto-generated name and kept the
requested one only as an automation_id slug, passed every check, and so
did an alert bound to the wrong dashboard.
expected_output gains two optional keys, each asserted only when the
item states a value; absent or blank means unasserted, so existing items
are unaffected:
- Title: exact match against the title argument. The fixture value is
trimmed, the agent's is not: a padded name is not the requested one. An
omitted title fails even when the automation_id carries its slug.
- Dashboard: "Title (id)", read the way Metric is, or a dashboard_id
key; compared against the dashboard_id argument verbatim. A Dashboard
with no "(id)" raises before the run, since a title alone can never
match and would leave the item red on every run.
title_correct and dashboard_correct join strict_pass, the Langfuse
scores and the run detail only for an item that states them, and so
does comparison_correct: an unstated check is None, neither scored nor
gated. Otherwise the 55 items with no title would each log
title_correct=1 for a check that never ran, and a refusal would read as
a title, dashboard and comparison failure on items that ask for none. A stated title is also given to the
simulated user, which then refuses a proposal showing another name, as
a real user would. The dashboard is not: finding it is the behaviour
under test, and telling the simulated user would hand the agent the
answer.
The per-check list that strict_pass, the best-run key, the run detail,
the Langfuse scores and the assertion message each repeated is now
AlertEvaluation.checks(), built from explicit check names, so a check
added later reaches all five and a non-check field never does.
Status is left out: create_metric_alert has no status argument and an
alert is always created active.
