What

Make --yes required on every command of the verb delete. Nothing else changes.

A delete command without --yes fails like any command missing a required flag: cli_usage, exit 2, before the credentials are read and before any network call. --yes is a flag, never a question: nothing is asked, nothing waits for an answer, and no environment variable stands for it.

This is a contract change. It contradicts ADR 0002 ("never a confirmation flag"), so ADR 0007 supersedes it and restates the contract with that one bullet changed. docs/contract/output.md, docs/contract/commands.md, CLAUDE.md rule 4, the pull request template and the add-command skill follow.

No delete command exists on main yet, so this pull request ships the rule, the mechanism and its enforcement. meili delete projects (#7) picks --yes up when it rebases: one line, ...BaseCommand.confirmFlags, plus --yes in its examples and snapshots.

Contract

  • The command name and flags derive from its routes by the naming rules of docs/contract/commands.md, and each route is reachable by a distinct set of flags, or the exception is recorded with its reason (or this pull request changes the contract and nothing else)
  • Output goes through src/lib/output.ts, errors through src/lib/errors.ts
  • The command never waits for a human: no prompt, no question, no $EDITOR; a delete command spreads BaseCommand.confirmFlags and its examples carry --yes
  • The command never speaks HTTP itself: the SDK or the generated client only, no fetch outside src/lib/clients/

Tests

  • --help snapshot added or updated on purpose — no command changed, no snapshot moved
  • JSON output snapshot for one success case per route and one error case — not applicable, no command added; test/lib/base-command.test.ts covers the refusal and the run
  • Integration test added (Meilisearch API commands only) — not applicable
  • pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, pnpm test pass locally

Simplicity

  • Nothing in the diff exists for a case the API cannot produce, a caller that does not exist, or a generality nobody asked for (rule 16)
  • Anything shared lives in src/lib/, is used by this command, and is named below

BaseCommand.confirmFlags is the one shared piece. It has no caller on this branch, which is the point: the next delete command spreads it instead of inventing its own flag, and the contract test fails if it does not. The enforcement is one required oclif flag, so there is no runtime check and no new error code.

Docs

  • docs/contract/ updated for every name, flag, variable or code this change adds or renames, or nothing to update
  • No accepted ADR was edited. A new ADR was added if a decision changed.

ADR 0002 was edited only to mark it superseded by ADR 0007, as rule 13 prescribes.

Housekeeping

  • oclif.manifest.json regenerated
  • Changeset added, or the change is invisible to users of the package (docs of this repository, tests, CI)
  • New dependency justified below, or none added — none

Notes for the reviewer

Two interface decisions worth your eyes:

  • The refusal message is oclif's. A missing --yes renders as {"error":{"code":"cli_usage","type":"cli","message":"The following error occurred:\n Missing required flag yes", ...}}, exactly like config add without --project. A dedicated message ("this deletes data") would need a runtime check in BaseCommand and a message an agent has to learn; the required flag needs neither. Say the word if you want the richer error instead.
  • The rule about verbs is enforced by the contract test, not at runtime. test/contract/commands.test.ts checks that every file under src/commands/delete/ declares --yes as required and that no other command does. The binary knows something narrower: a required flag oclif refuses to do without. A runtime check in init() keyed on the verb was considered and dropped, and the ADR says why: the verb would come from this.id, which oclif fills from the manifest (this.id = this.ctor.id), so it is undefined when a test runs a command class directly, as every test here does through runCommand. The rule would then hold in the binary and not in the tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Delete commands now require the --yes flag. Without it, the CLI stops with a usage error before making a network request; it does not prompt interactively.
    • cancel and swap commands run without confirmation.
  • Documentation
    • Updated command guidance and examples to reflect the deletion confirmation requirement and clarify that confirmation cannot be supplied through an environment variable.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI defines a required --yes flag for delete commands. The updated contract specifies the error when the flag is missing. Tests and command guidance reflect the requirement, while cancel and swap remain unchanged.

Changes: Delete confirmation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define the delete confirmation contract
docs/adr/0007-delete-commands-require-yes.md, docs/adr/0002-agent-first-output-contract.md, docs/contract/commands.md, docs/contract/output.md
The new ADR and updated contracts specify that delete commands require --yes, and that omission results in cli_usage with exit code 2 before a network call. They retain the existing selector requirement and the behavior of cancel and swap.
Add the shared flag and enforce its contract
src/lib/api-naming.ts, src/lib/base-command.ts, oclif.manifest.json, test/contract/commands.test.ts, test/contract/env.test.ts, test/lib/base-command.test.ts
BaseCommand.confirmFlags defines the required boolean --yes flag. The CLI-owned flag list and six manifest entries are updated. Tests check flag declarations and parser results.
Update command and release guidance
.claude/skills/add-command/SKILL.md, .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md, CLAUDE.md, .changeset/first-version.md
Command authoring guidance, the pull-request checklist, and the changeset describe the delete confirmation requirement and the unchanged behavior of cancel and swap.

Add --yes to the introductory delete example.

Line 5 shows meili delete documents --index movies --ids 1,2. Under the new contract, that command fails with cli_usage and exit 2. Add --yes so the introductory example remains usable. As per path instructions, “docs/contract/ is what the CLI promises.”

A deletion is the only thing the CLI does that the next command cannot
undo. `--yes` is not a question: nothing is asked, nothing waits for an
answer, and no environment variable stands for it; it is a second token
the agent writes on the same line, at the moment it writes the deletion.
Without it, a delete command fails like any command missing a required
flag, cli_usage and exit 2, before the credentials are read and before
any network call.

The mechanism is one shared group, BaseCommand.confirmFlags, that every
command of the verb delete spreads, and a contract test that checks they
all do and that no other command does.

No delete command exists on main yet, so this change ships the rule, the
mechanism and its enforcement; `meili delete projects` picks it up when
it lands. The rule contradicts ADR 0002, so ADR 0007 supersedes it and
restates the contract with that one bullet changed.
