Context

The ui-components package had react listed under dependencies. When published, this metadata structure forces consumer applications running a different sub-version of React 19 to install a duplicate instance of React, triggering runtime Invalid hook call errors.

Changes

To resolve external runtime duplication while preserving strict React 19 compatibility and seamless local workspace development, this PR applies the following:

  1. Moved react to peerDependencies in packages/ui-components/package.json using the catalog:peer-react19 protocol to delegate runtime React resolution to the host/consumer application.
  2. Duplicated react in devDependencies to guarantee that local package builds (pnpm build), test utilities, and TypeScript types compilation inside the isolated package directory do not break.
  3. Aligned pnpm Catalogs (pnpm-workspace.yaml): Configured catalog:peer-react19 to target a loose ^19.0.0 range. When the library is published, pnpm will substitute the catalog protocol with a standard open SemVer range (^19.0.0) matching any consumer's native React 19 installation.
  4. Added a Changeset: Generated a patch bump changeset (.changeset/cozy-teeth-speak.md) to comply with the workspace publishing policy.

Fixes #9175

@avivkeller wdyt about this? Does it make sense?

Yes, definitely. Keeping React in dependencies causes duplicate React installations in consumer apps if their React 19 version doesn't match exactly. This leads to broken hooks at runtime. peerDependencies is the standard way to fix this.

I'm currently working on improving the external usage experience of the library, so this change is essential.

Updated the commit to include a minor infrastructure fix.

Added pnpm-lock.yaml to .prettierignore to prevent local IDE formatters (such as Prettier's formatOnSave) from accidentally re-formatting the lockfile, which causes editor lag and file corruption.

Sorry for the delay here! I thought I already commented lol, but I don't like this remapping of React as a peer dep, a dev dep, a catalog dep, etc, can you explain why all this overhead is needed?

@MattIPv4

React definitely should be a dev/peer dep, rather than a prod dep 👍 Not sure I follow why it needs a separate catalog entry though?

Found 2 versions of react

The monorepo already has two React versions (19.2.8 and 19.3.0) pulled by:
@node-core/ui-components, @node-core/website, @node-core/platform-vercel, and @node-core/doc-kit.
That drift is exactly what the catalog entry fixes: one line in pnpm-workspace.yaml instead of React versions declared independently across several package.json files.

If you'd rather drop the catalog and hardcode ^19.0.0 per package the drift will keep coming back.

I still don't follow that... we already have an existing catalog entry for React, which is ^19.3.0.

If we set the peer dep explicitly to ^19.0.0, not a catalog entry, and have the dev dep use the existing catalog entry, they are compatible semver ranges, and so we should end up with only one React version installed?

You're right — the catalog entry already exists (react: ^19.3.0), and both apps/site and packages/ui-components reference it via catalog:. So the duplicate React isn't caused by the peer range.

The second React (19.2.8) comes from a transitive chain, not from our manifests:

@node-core/ui-components@1.6.3
└─┬ @node-core/doc-kit@1.2.0
  └── @node-core/remark-lint@1.4.1 (dependencies)

ui-components@1.6.3 was published before this PR, with React in dependencies (resolving to 19.2.8). Catalog can't override React ranges inside published transitive deps, so that old copy brings its own React alongside our 19.3.0.

So yes — setting peer to ^19.0.0 and dev to catalog: should give one React from our side, but it won't remove the 19.2.8 that comes through doc-kit@1.2.0. That needs either a doc-kit bump or an override.

It's another issue.

👍 Makes sense, so we can drop the extra catalog here then, please. And if you want to create the follow-up PR for doc-kit to fix that issue, that'd be great!

Updated the commit with the latest changes:

  • removed peerDependencies from platforms/vercel and platforms/cloudflare
  • dropped the peer-react19 catalog entry.

platform-vercel is private: true — it's never published to npm, and its only consumer is apps/site via workspace:*. Peer dependencies only make sense for published packages that declare a contract to external consumers, so here they served no purpose. platform-default already had none, so this just aligns the three platform packages.

The package may be private, but that doesn't mean we should not follow correct semantics for the package metadata... if the package needs React, it should be declared as a peer dependency. Without that, there's a good chance pnpm will ensure that React is unavailable for it as it blocks dependency hoisting.

Please can I ask that you keep the changes in this PR isolated to just what you originally set out to solve, making React a peer dependency. We keep having to circle back around as you make additional changes each time.

Understood — I've reverted the extra changes. The PR is now isolated to the original scope: React as a peer dependency in ui-components. Nothing else — no react-dom, no platform packages, no .prettierignore.

You're right about the peer semantics for platform-vercel (analytics.tsx is a React component). One clarification on the hoisting concern: pnpm doesn't hoist by default, and peers are resolved from the dependency graph rather than from node_modules hoisting. apps/site already declares React directly and consumes platform-vercel via workspace:*, so React would resolve from there regardless. But agreed on the metadata — reverted.

- Move react from dependencies to peerDependencies (^19.0.0) and
  devDependencies (catalog:) in packages/ui-components.

fix(ui-components): react in regular dependencies causes duplicate hook errors in consumer apps
