@ewanharris I like this idea, but is there any way we can keep the order of things in the readme?
|
@rhamzeh I think we totally could, instead of iterating over I guess a couple questions:

@ewanharris would be possible to follow the order below? It's what we use for all the SDKs and for the docs. |

Introduce a code generator (cmd/gendocs) that walks the cobra command
tree and splices a fresh Commands section and table-of-contents block
into README.md. Command descriptions, parameters, examples, and
response samples are sourced directly from each command's Long,
Example, and Annotations fields, making the cobra definition the
single source of truth.
A make generate-docs target runs the generator. A CI step
("Check README commands section is up to date") fails the build if
the committed README doesn't match the generated output, so drift is
caught on every PR.
To populate the generated output, Long, Example, and docs:response /
docs:response:lang annotation fields were added to all store, model,
tuple, and query commands. docs:response:lang controls the fence
language for non-JSON responses (yaml for store export, fga for model
get and transform, text for model test).
Commands are ordered alphabetically (cobra's Commands() order).
Top-level runnables (version) are excluded from both the body and
the TOC — they have no group heading.
…positional args Preserve registration order in generated docs by setting cobra.EnableCommandSorting=false in cmd/gendocs/main.go and reordering AddCommand calls to match the intended learning path: store -> model -> tuple -> query -> mapping at the top level, and a write-before-read subcommand order within each group. Render cmd.Long for both runnable and group commands so descriptions like "Check if a user has a particular relation with an object" appear in the generated section. Emit a Parameters section under group command headings for their PersistentFlags, so --store-id, --model-id, --contextual-tuple, --context, and --consistency are documented under Relationship Queries rather than silently omitted. Update Use fields on check, expand, list-objects, list-relations (query) and write, delete (tuple) to include positional argument names so UseLine() generates complete syntax like "fga query check <user> <relation> <object>" instead of "fga query check". # Conflicts: # cmd/mapping/mapping.go
Reorder AddCommand calls in store, model, and tuple group files so the generated docs section follows the same sequence used in the OpenFGA SDKs and docs site (list before create, changes/read before write/delete, etc.). cobra.EnableCommandSorting is disabled in gendocs only, so this reordering affects docs output only and not user-facing help text.
Picks up --condition-expression and --condition-parameters flags added by the dynamic conditions feature (#768).
- anchor(): preserve hyphens so "JSON-to-tuple" slugs render correctly - escapeHTML(): replace < > in flag usage with HTML entities so they survive GitHub Markdown rendering - docs:response:raw: new annotation flag — emit response content as raw markdown instead of wrapping in a single fence, enabling multi-payload responses for create, validate, and delete - write/validate/transform Use strings: add [model] optional arg - tuple write/delete Use strings: wrap positional args as optional since --file makes them unnecessary - list-users example: add --user-filter (required flag was absent) - store create --format: fix unterminated quote - model transform --output-format: remove extra trailing quote
Adds docs:response and docs:response:lang annotations to syncCmd, matching the evaluate command format (JSONL with op/user/relation/object shape). Regenerates README to include the sync subcommand section.

Not a blocker: would be nice if we can maintain a table summary at the top of each section for a quick skim.
If complicated, no need.

Can we retain the text used in the original by modifying the annotations on the command?

This was useful, but I dunno how to retain it in the new flow.
I'm OK getting rid of it, but what do you think of maybe adding a quick tips section at the end that is not generated for things like this?

Can we say this is optional and if omitted we'll get latest (instead of having that sentence above Command?)

Why are the parameter documentation missing here?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Ohhh they are mentioned at the query section.
Do you think we can include them here even if not in a separate parameters section but as:
fga query list-objects <user> <relation> <object-type> [--model-id=<...>] [--other-flag=...]

[] for optional flags, omit for required

| fga query list-relations <user> <object> [flags] |

Instead of just [flags] can we list them?
| In `json` format, the fields appear intermixed with the model. | ||

| Validates that an authorization model is valid. When the input parses successfully, the JSON response includes size_kb, the protobuf-serialized size of the model in KB. |

This part seems to have dropped a lot of documentation compared to what was pre-existing. I know many people (including may be the VS Code ext) pointed to this as the store file documentation.
I'm fine moving that out to a separate section, but let's still have it rather than removing it entirely

Description
What problem is being solved?
The Commands section of README.md was hand-rolled and had drifted out of sync with the actual CLI — commands were missing, examples were outdated, and there was no mechanism to catch regressions.
How is it being solved?
A code generator (
cmd/gendocs) walks the cobra command tree and splices a fresh Commands section and table-of-contents block into README.md. Command descriptions, parameters, examples, and response samples are sourced directly from each command'sLong,Example, andAnnotationsfields, making the cobra definition the single source of truth.A
make generate-docstarget runs the generator, and a new CI step fails the build if the committed README doesn't match the generated output, so drift is caught on every PR.What changes are made to solve it?
internal/doc: new package containing the generator and splice logic, with testscmd/gendocs/main.go: entrypoint that wires the root command into the generatorMakefile: generate-docs target.github/workflows/main.yaml: Check README commands section is up to date CI stepLong,Example, anddocs:response/docs:response:langannotation fields added to all store, model, tuple, and query commands to populate the generated outputREADME.md: Commands section and ToC block wrapped with splice markers; content regeneratedOne change from this is that commands are now ordered alphabetically (cobra's
Commands()order), so the generated section reads Authorization Models -> Manage JSON-to-tuple mappings -> Relationship Queries -> Stores -> Relationship Tuples rather than the previous hand-written order that kind of followed the natural flow of usage. Top-level runnables (version) are excluded from both the body and the ToC as they have no group heading.References
