Fixes openfrontio/ai-ops#99

Description:

What was wrong. About 50 players a day were kicked mid-game with KICK_REASON_INVALID_MESSAGE. Almost every one of those parse failures was expected number, received NaN → at intent.troops. The attack and boat intent schemas take troops as a finite float >= 0, and SocketIngress kicks the client on any parse failure. The client builds troops as attackRatio * troops() in several places, or as Math.min(incomingAttack.troops, …) for counter-attacks. It sent the result without checking it.

What changed.

  • Transport.onSendAttackIntent / onSendBoatAttackIntent now drop an intent whose troops are not a finite number >= 0. The player's click does nothing instead of ending their game. Each drop goes to console.error with an Error. That call is already forwarded to Faro with the stack, so the call site producing the NaN shows up in client telemetry (the forwarder already deduplicates).
  • The two counter-attack paths (ClientGameRunner.doRetaliateAttackMostRecent, AttacksDisplay.handleRetaliate) now go through a new counterAttackTroops helper. If the incoming attack's count is not finite, the helper ignores it and uses the player's available troops, so Math.min cannot turn the whole intent into NaN.

Approach and alternatives. Reading the code didn't pin down the NaN source. UserSettings.attackRatio() already falls back on NaN, and the ratio slider and keybind paths are clamped. The counter-attack Math.min is the one path the issue flagged, and it is now guarded. The Transport guard covers every other caller, and its telemetry will name the remaining source if there is one. A follow-up can then fix that source directly. Making the server reject the single intent instead of kicking would also work, but it is a separate design choice and is left out on purpose, as the issue asks.

What I ran.

  • npx vitest tests/client/TransportSendPaths.test.ts --run: the new tests fail without the fix (4 frames sent, counterAttackTroops missing) and pass with it.
  • npx vitest tests/client --run: 286 files, 3784 tests pass.
  • npm run lint, npm run typecheck, and npx prettier --write on the touched files: all clean.

Please complete the following:

  • I have added screenshots for all UI updates (no UI change)
  • I process any text displayed to the user through translateText() and I've added it to the en.json file (no user-visible text)
  • I have added relevant tests to the test directory

…ting kicked

The intent schemas take troops as a finite float >= 0 and the server kicks a
client whose message fails to parse, so an attack or boat intent carrying NaN
troops threw the player out of the game. Transport now drops such an intent
and logs it with a stack through console.error (forwarded to client
telemetry), so the producing call site shows up. The two counter-attack paths
also ignore an incoming attack whose count is not finite instead of letting
Math.min turn the whole intent into NaN.

Walkthrough

Transport now rejects attack and boat intents with invalid troop counts. Client retaliation calculations use a shared helper to cap finite incoming troop counts at the available amount.

Changes

Troop Count Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Transport troop-count handling
src/client/Transport.ts, tests/client/TransportSendPaths.test.ts
Transport drops attack and boat intents with non-finite or negative troop counts and logs errors. Tests cover rejected intents, zero-troop boat intents, and counterattack troop calculations.
Retaliation calculations
src/client/ClientGameRunner.ts, src/client/hud/layers/AttacksDisplay.ts
Both retaliation calculations use counterAttackTroops to determine the troop count.

Players with malformed persisted attack-ratio settings can lose counter-attacks, but the issue is limited to those settings and does not broadly affect normal play.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Verdict: No issues found. 0 findings (0 high, 0 medium, 0 low).

I checked the changes for bugs and for CLAUDE.md compliance:

  • The Transport guard (isSendableTroops) drops attack/boat intents whose troops are NaN, ±Infinity or negative before sendIntent, which matches the schema constraint (finite and >= 0). Intent is already imported for the type parameter.
  • counterAttackTroops stops a non-finite incoming count from turning the counter-attack into NaN. If available is itself NaN, the Transport guard still drops the intent.
  • The tests cover both paths, and console.error is spied in the suite's setup, so the toHaveBeenCalledTimes(4) assertion holds.
  • All changes are client-side (src/client), with no engine or package changes and no user-visible text, so the CLAUDE.md rules on engine tests and i18n don't apply.

115-121: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

counterAttackTroops can return a negative or NaN count.

If available is NaN, negative, or infinite, the helper returns it as is. Math.min(incoming, NaN) is NaN. onSendAttackIntent then drops the intent and logs an error. The player sees no counter-attack. This is a safe fallback, so the impact is low. A negative incomingTroops is also passed through unchanged, and it is dropped the same way.

If you want a clear result, clamp the output to a finite value that is 0 or higher. Keep the drop and log in isSendableTroops as the last guard.

Review round 1: the Claude review run passed with no findings. CodeRabbit raised one trivial nitpick, to clamp counterAttackTroops to a finite count >= 0. I declined it. Clamping a NaN available to 0 would turn the bad count into a silent zero-troop attack, and isSendableTroops would no longer log it. The point of that log is to name the NaN source in telemetry. CI is green except Has Milestone, which needs a maintainer to set a milestone. No code changes.
