Summary

OAuth pgAdmin token mode connection parameter

Adds PostgreSQL 18 OAuth authentication using the current pgAdmin login access token.

The new OAuth pgAdmin token mode connection parameter supports:

  • disabled — Default; do not supply the pgAdmin login token.
  • direct — Forward the login access token to PostgreSQL. Use only with trusted database servers.
  • exchange — Exchange the login access token before connecting. The OIDC provider must issue the intended database audience and permissions.

Both enabled modes require oauth_client_id and oauth_issuer. Exchange supports configured oauth_scope, requires verified HTTPS, and never falls back to direct mode.

The implementation includes token refresh, synchronous and asynchronous connections, resets, query cancellation, and preservation of SSH credential prompts. Documentation and unit/regression tests are included.

I manually tested direct mode and token exchange, including with the pgAdmin Alpine Docker image.

A minimal Keycloak/PostgreSQL 18 example for direct mode is available here:
https://github.com/simonj1337/pgadmin4-local-oidc-test

Limitations

Token retrieval requires an authenticated pgAdmin request. Autonomous background reconnects are unsupported.

Requires libpq 18.x. Supports Psycopg’s python implementation. The c implementation is also supported, but only on Linux. The binary implementation is rejected. The c implementation library discovery is conservative but (unfortunately) does not prove Psycopg’s exact library binding.

This ctypes adapter is temporary, pending native OAuth hook support in the Psycopg version supported by pgAdmin:
psycopg/psycopg#1190

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for using a pgAdmin OIDC login token to authenticate PostgreSQL 18+ connections in direct or token-exchange mode.
    • Added a server setting to select the token mode, with options for the OAuth client ID, issuer, and optional scope.
    • Tokens nearing expiration are refreshed automatically.
    • Added setup and troubleshooting guidance, including compatibility, security, and connection requirements.
  • Bug Fixes

    • OAuth connection failures no longer prompt for a database password when no SSH tunnel password is required.

docs/en_US/oauth2.rst, web/pgadmin/utils/pg_oauth2.py, web/pgadmin/utils/tests/test_pg_oauth2.py
Adds direct token retrieval, refresh, exchange, and the libpq bearer-token hook. Adds validation for token exchange and supported libpq and Psycopg configurations, with corresponding tests.
Apply OAuth tokens to connection operations
web/pgadmin/utils/driver/psycopg3/...
Scopes OAuth tokens around connection, reset, and cancellation operations. Excludes the pgAdmin-only mode parameter from libpq connection options and tests these paths.

Thanks for this; it's clearly been put together with care. The ctypes PGoauthBearerRequest layout and hook signatures match the PG18 libpq-fe.h, token values are kept out of logs and error messages, and the docs are thorough. There are a few things that need addressing before it can go in, though:

  1. Most of the new tests never run. test_pg_oauth2.py and test_connection_oauth.py subclass plain unittest.TestCase, but runtests.py only collects BaseTestGenerator subclasses, so CI runs none of those 70 tests. Run by hand, three fail: test_connection_oauth.py:542 and :664 mock _decrypt_password as (False, None, None), which reset() treats as a decryption failure and returns early. The mock should return (True, '', None), and both files should move onto BaseTestGenerator (the RDS tests show how to skip the server setup with _SkipServerSetUpMixin).

  2. Shared servers. I agree with CodeRabbit's comment: the owner's oauth_pgadmin_token_mode applies to every user of a shared server, so each of them forwards their own login token to a host they didn't choose, with no way to opt out. Adding the key to SENSITIVE_CONN_KEYS fixes that.

  3. SSH tunnel left running. The OAuthTokenError branch in connect() (connection.py:644) returns without calling manager.stop_ssh_tunnel(), unlike the psycopg.Error path just below it.

  4. Issuer not checked in direct mode. The docs say oauth_issuer must match the issuer used for the pgAdmin login token, but nothing enforces it. libpq only checks the database server's advertised issuer against oauth_issuer, so a server configured with a different issuer still receives the pgAdmin token. Please refuse to supply the token unless oauth_issuer matches the issuer in the login provider's metadata.

  5. Token exchange needs client authentication and an audience. As written, the exchange request is unauthenticated and uses the cluster's client_id, which means the identity provider has to allow token exchange from a public client; once that's allowed, anyone holding a user's access token can make the same request. With no audience or resource, whether the result is actually restricted to the database depends entirely on IdP configuration, which the docs themselves acknowledge. Since limiting reuse is the whole point of exchange mode, please authenticate the request with pgAdmin's own client credentials (which the login client already holds) and name the target with audience, either from oauth_client_id or a separate parameter if providers differ on what it should be.
