Companion to the maintenance update of Three Ways of Storing and Accessing Lots of Images in Python.

What changed

  • storing_images.py and storing_images.ipynb: plt.style.use("seaborn-whitegrid") becomes plt.style.use("seaborn-v0_8-whitegrid"). Matplotlib 3.6 renamed the bundled seaborn styles, and the old name now raises OSError on current Matplotlib. The article's draft gets the same fix.
  • New requirements.txt pinned to the versions in the article's updated dependencies field: Pillow 12.3.0, lmdb 3.0.0, h5py 3.16.0, numpy 2.5.3, matplotlib 3.11.2 (tested on Python 3.14).

Verification

  • Created a fresh venv on Python 3.14.6 from requirements.txt.
  • Ran storing_images.py, and the notebook's code cells as a script, with MPLBACKEND=Agg on a synthetic CIFAR-shaped batch (100 random 32x32x3 images). The real dataset is 163MB and the full run writes several GB, so cutoffs was cut to [10, 100, 200] for the test run only. Both ran end to end, with every store, read, and plot step completing.
  • uvx ruff@0.14.1 format --check storing-images and uvx ruff@0.14.1 check storing-images both pass.

…ing and Accessing Lots of Images in Python

- Use the seaborn-v0_8-whitegrid Matplotlib style (seaborn-whitegrid was removed)
- Add requirements.txt pinned to the article's tested versions
