Fixes #443

Summary

  • Restore Matplotlib-style getters and setters for xlim/ylim, including xmin/xmax and ymin/ymax aliases.
  • Make xticks/yticks return locations and label handles for reads and writes, with minor reads/results following the requested minor axis.
  • Preserve live Legend handles in the pyplot API and correct the Axes return annotations.
  • Document the compatibility contract and add a bugfix news fragment.
  • Merge current upstream main.

Validation

  • Focused pyplot getter, resize, shared-panel sizing, inset/free-form/twin-axis, and limit-conflict regressions — 6 passed.
  • Full pyplot suite — 1,119 passed, 100 skipped; one unrelated pandas plotting test could not run because optional Matplotlib is not installed in this environment.
  • ty check python/xy/pyplot/_axes.py, Ruff check/format, and git diff --check — passed.
  • Pinned reflex-release changelog check, heading check, and generated workflow sync passed on the previous validation pass.
  • The generated JS bundle and Rust release build both completed locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Plot limit controls return current or updated axis limits and accept xmin/xmax and ymin/ymax aliases.
    • Tick controls return tick locations and label handles. Calls without tick-setting arguments retrieve major ticks by default, or minor ticks with minor=True.
    • Legend creation returns a live legend handle.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Getter and setter results reflect the requested plotting operation.
    • Minor tick queries report locations consistent with the rendered plot, including after figure resizing.
    • Conflicting limit aliases and endpoint arguments are rejected.

Implemented and pushed in commit 01dfed28.

The change restores Matplotlib-style getter/setter behavior for xlim/ylim and xticks/yticks, keeps pure getter calls non-mutating, returns resulting limits and tick handles, and annotates pyplot.legend as returning the live Legend handle.

Validation passed for the focused issue tests, 995 remaining pyplot tests (99 skipped), Ruff, and formatting. The full local suite still has unrelated Windows subprocess import/encoding failures and an unavailable optional pandas Matplotlib backend.

Walkthrough

Pyplot limit and tick helpers now return values for getter and setter calls. Limit helpers accept bound aliases. Tick getters can query minor ticks. The legend helper declares and returns its live handle.

Changes: Pyplot return-value semantics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Axis limit getters and setters
python/xy/pyplot/__init__.py, python/xy/pyplot/_axes.py, python/xy/pyplot/_plot_types.py, tests/pyplot/*, spec/matplotlib/compat*, news/470.bugfix.md
xlim, ylim, set_xlim, and set_ylim return current or updated bounds. The pyplot helpers accept named bounds and aliases, and reject conflicting bound names. Tests cover getter behavior, setter results, and alias conflicts.
Axis tick getters and handles
python/xy/pyplot/__init__.py, python/xy/pyplot/_axes.py, python/xy/pyplot/_plot_types.py, python/xy/pyplot/_mplfig.py, tests/pyplot/*, spec/matplotlib/compat*, news/470.bugfix.md
xticks, yticks, set_xticks, and set_yticks return tick locations and label handles. Minor tick queries calculate positions from copied axis properties. Figure size changes clear each axes’ cached chart. Tests cover non-mutating getters, setter results, and minor tick locations across figure sizes.
Live legend handle
python/xy/pyplot/__init__.py, tests/pyplot/test_reference_semantics.py, news/470.bugfix.md
pyplot.legend() declares and returns the live legend attached to the current axes. A test checks the returned handle type and identity.

Minor-tick getters may report locations that differ from the chart on unequal-width shared panels. This is a bounded compatibility issue to fix or accept before merging.

Explanation

The changed source, type declarations, tests, compatibility documents, news fragment, and figure cache invalidation support the #443 limit, tick, and legend contracts. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #443 behavior is implemented for limit getters and setters, tick getters and setters, and live legend handles. The reference-test criterion remains unmet. test_pyplot_limits_support_getters_keywords_and_return_values, test_pyplot_ticks_getters_are_non_mutating_and_setters_return_handles, test_pyplot_minor_tick_getters_return_minor_locations, and test_pyplot_legend_returns_live_legend_handle exercise only xyplt and XY internals. They do not compare the new getter, setter, return-value, or no-mutation behavior with equivalent Matplotlib calls.

Resolution

Update the issue-specific tests in tests/pyplot/test_reference_semantics.py to execute equivalent Matplotlib limit, tick, minor-tick, and legend operations. Compare locations, limits, label handles or text, setter results, live legend identity, and state before and after getter calls. Preserve the existing skip behavior when Matplotlib is unavailable.

Required changes:

  1. Fix the 4 new ty check errors in xticks / yticks (see the inline comment).
  2. xticks(ticks, minor=True) / yticks(ticks, minor=True) drop the ticks and return the major ticks. Make the return value follow minor. Add a test (see the inline comment).
  3. Add a news fragment after you merge main. Update the xlim/xticks rows in spec/matplotlib/compat.md and add a line to compat-changelog.md.

What I checked: getters xlim(), ylim(), xticks() and yticks() return the same values as Matplotlib 3.11. They do not freeze autoscale: data plotted after a getter call still expands the view. In headless Chromium, the HTML export is the same with and without the getter calls. Keyword setters, tuple setters, inverted setters and the legend() handle also match Matplotlib. tests/pyplot passes: 1108 passed, 102 skipped. Ruff check and format are clean.

P1 Minor ticks miss drawn edges

With axes.autolimit_mode="round_numbers" and minorticks_on(), minor-tick getters use the unrounded data limits. Drawing first expands those limits through _apply_round_number_domains, then computes ticks. For data spanning 0.3–1.2, the getter can therefore omit minor ticks drawn near the expanded edges. Code using the returned locations to place marks will miss those ticks.

Resolve the same view limits as drawing before calling _apply_tickers.
