Why

branch-prune only deletes a branch whose pull request merged in the same repository, at the branch's tip. Some branches can never qualify, so they stay forever unless someone deletes them by hand:

None of the tools available to Claude can delete a ref, and Rishi asked for these to be cleaned up. PRUNE_TOKEN already has the access needed (Contents: Read and write on all repositories). This repository is public, so running the job costs no Actions minutes.

What

  • .github/workflows/delete-branch.yml

    • workflow_dispatch only. Inputs: repository, branch, sha and mode (dry-run by default).
    • Permissions: an empty top-level block, and contents: read for the checkout only. Every API call uses PRUNE_TOKEN.
    • Every input reaches the shell through env:. The job fails if PRUNE_TOKEN is unset.
    • Pinned checkout, persist-credentials: false, timeout-minutes: 5. Runs are queued, never cancelled.
  • scripts/delete-branch.sh deletes nothing unless every check holds:

    1. The repository belongs to the workflow's owner.
    2. sha is a full 40-character SHA, and the branch's tip is exactly that commit, so work pushed after you looked can't be deleted.
    3. The branch isn't the default branch and doesn't match KEEP_RE. That is the same long-lived pattern prune-merged-branches.sh uses: main, develop, deploy-*, release/*, v1…
    4. GitHub doesn't report the branch as protected.
    5. No open pull request uses the branch as its head or as its base.

    Branch names are restricted to [A-Za-z0-9._/@+-], with git's own .., //, .lock and @{ rules. A branch that's already gone exits 0. After the DELETE, the script reads the branch back and fails if it still exists. The job summary prints the one-line gh api command that restores the branch at the same commit. --help prints the header.

How it was tested

  • shellcheck on the script, and actionlint 1.7.7 on the workflow: clean.
  • A stub gh first on PATH: 31 checks, all passing. They cover:
    • dry run (no DELETE sent) and apply (exactly one DELETE);
    • tip mismatch;
    • default branch;
    • develop, deploy-staging, release/1.0 and v2.1;
    • protected true and null;
    • an open PR as head, and as base;
    • already gone (404), and a branch read that fails (500);
    • a repository owned by someone else;
    • a short or uppercase SHA, and a bad mode;
    • a branch that still exists after the DELETE;
    • 11 rejected branch names, including -x, a..b, a;rm, a$(id), a@{1} and an empty name;
    • a / branch, which checks the encoding (ci%2Fbranch-cleanup, head=rishitank%3Aci%2Fbranch-cleanup).
  • The tests found one real bug before this push. jq '.protected // empty' turns false into empty, because // treats false as missing, so every unprotected branch was refused. It failed safe, and it's fixed.
  • Mutation check: nine mutants, each removing one guard (tip, protected, open head, open base, default branch, owner, keep pattern, dry run, read-back). Every one fails between 1 and 32 checks.

After merge

  1. Dry-run each of the three branches above, using the tip SHAs from the PR description of this run:
    • redoc c1ebe2c1e44634b32d4b7a55d47b8148109de6ce
    • showpiece 1c9478792ad5688efecdb7ea5b6f5290ee361e22
    • ci/branch-cleanup 5b91655c4fa7df74bb692a57a9c03f30fe0819c3
  2. Read the summaries, then run each with mode: apply.

#13 and #34 keep their commits under refs/pull/*/head, so nothing is lost.

branch-prune only deletes branches whose PR merged in the same repository.
A fork's branch merged upstream, or a branch whose PR was closed in favour
of a re-cut, never qualifies. delete-branch.yml deletes exactly one such
branch, by workflow_dispatch, with PRUNE_TOKEN, after checking: the repo
belongs to this account, the tip is exactly the given SHA, not the default
branch or a long-lived name (the prune's KEEP_RE), not protected, and no
open PR uses it as head or base. Dry run by default.

Learning: In scripts/delete-branch.sh, enumerating every sibling fork's REST /pulls endpoint is impractical for large fork networks. The branch-deletion guard instead queries GraphQL Ref.associatedPullRequests(states: OPEN) for refs/heads/<branch> and requires a valid zero count. Query failures and missing or non-numeric counts refuse deletion. REST checks against the repository, its parent and its source remain as a second source.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a manually triggered branch removal workflow, with a dry-run mode by default and an apply mode for deletion.
    • Before removal, branches are checked against repository identity, commit, protection and open pull requests. The default branch and designated branches are not eligible for deletion.
    • Already-missing branches are treated as successful, and completed deletions are verified. Any failed safety check prevents deletion.

A manually dispatched workflow accepts repository, branch, SHA and mode inputs. It invokes a script that validates the target and checks for open pull requests. Dry-run mode reports the proposed deletion. Apply mode deletes the branch and verifies removal.

Changes: Branch deletion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow dispatch and script invocation
.github/workflows/delete-branch.yml, scripts/delete-branch.sh
The workflow defines dispatch inputs, execution controls and a token check, then passes the inputs to the script. The script defines and parses its CLI arguments and handles errors and output.
Repository and branch validation
scripts/delete-branch.sh
The script validates the mode, repository identity, branch name and expected SHA. It checks the default branch, branch tip and protection status. An already-missing branch succeeds without deletion.
Pull request checks and deletion
scripts/delete-branch.sh
The script checks for open pull requests. Dry-run mode reports the proposed deletion. Apply mode deletes the branch and verifies removal.

…r echoes

From the independent review of #15:

- A fork branch whose pull request is still open upstream is refused: open
  PRs with this branch as head are also looked up in the fork's parent and
  source repositories (rishitank/openapi-sampler's branch for the open
  Redocly/openapi-sampler#223 would otherwise have passed every check).
- After the DELETE only a 404 counts as gone; any other read-back failure
  fails the run, with a short retry for a read that briefly still sees it.
- The job only runs from main, so a dispatch on another branch cannot run an
  unreviewed copy of the script with PRUNE_TOKEN.
- A renamed or transferred repository, or a renamed branch, that gh follows
  through a redirect is refused. Owner names compare case-insensitively.
- Inputs are stripped of newlines and backticks before they are echoed, so a
  value cannot start its own workflow command. A flag without a value is a
  usage error (exit 2).
- The header and workflow say the tip check narrows, but cannot close, the
  window before the DELETE.

40 stub checks pass; each new guard is mutation-tested.

…ace note

The previous commit replaced delete-branch.yml with a placeholder by mistake.
This puts back the full workflow, with the review changes: the job only runs
from main, and the header says the tip check narrows, but cannot close, the
window before the DELETE, and that a fork's parent is checked for open PRs.

Independent Claude review (9ff4f21), and fixes in 715c09c + c7220c0

The reviewer ran actionlint, shellcheck, zizmor --offline (default and --persona=auditor) and the stub harness, then probed every finding with an extended stub.

# Severity Finding Status
1 Must-fix A fork's PRs live in its parent repository, so open upstream PRs were never checked. rishitank/openapi-sampler's fix/xml-root-and-composition is the head of the open Redocly/openapi-sampler#223, and it would have passed every check. Fixed. parent.full_name and source.full_name come from the repository read, and each is checked for open PRs with head owner:branch. Test: open upstream PR → refused, no DELETE.
2 Should-fix The read-back after the DELETE treated any failure, including a 502, as "gone", and reported "Deleted". Fixed. Only a 404 counts as gone. Any other failure fails the run, with up to 3 reads 2 s apart in case the branch briefly still shows. Test: 502 read-back → exit 1.
3 Should-fix The REST DELETE has no precondition, so a push in the seconds between the tip check and the DELETE could be lost. The docs said this "can't" happen. Documented honestly in the script header, the workflow header and here: the tip check narrows the window but can't close it. GraphQL updateRefs with beforeOid would be atomic, but it's unverified (force flag, error exit code). That's a possible follow-up.
4 Should-fix A dispatch with --ref on any branch would run that branch's copy of the script with PRUNE_TOKEN. Fixed: if: github.ref == 'refs/heads/main' on the job. Not done: moving PRUNE_TOKEN into a main-only environment needs repository settings that the connector can't change. branch-prune.yml has the same exposure today.
5 Nit A newline in an input was echoed before validation, so it could start its own ::warning workflow command. Fixed: inputs are stripped of CR/LF and backticks before they are echoed or summarised. Tests: repo and branch injection attempts don't reach the log or the summary as commands.
6 Nit gh follows redirects, so a renamed or transferred repo could pass as the requested one. Owner compare was case-sensitive. Fixed: full_name must equal the input, case-insensitively, and the owner compare is case-insensitive. Tests: transferred repo → refused; owner RishiTank → accepted.
7 Nit A flag with no value exited silently. Fixed: usage error, exit 2, like the prune.
8 Nit A renamed branch (301) passed the dry run. Fixed: the returned .name must equal the requested branch.

Checked and fine:

  • No ${{ }} in run:.
  • No argument injection into gh.
  • @uri encoding of /, +, @ and :, matching Octokit's deleteRef and getBranch.
  • The gh 404 text, and --jq length.
  • The protected flag covers rulesets.
  • Tags are never touched, and the token is never printed.
  • Archived repos and missing access fail closed.

Verification on c7220c0:

  • shellcheck, actionlint 1.7.7 and zizmor --offline are clean.
  • 40 stub checks pass. Each new guard is mutation-tested: removing it fails 1 to 42 checks.
  • Blob SHAs on the branch match the local files (52bd819, a8824b4).

My mistake: 715c09c briefly replaced the workflow with a placeholder, and c7220c0 restored it. A squash merge leaves only the final tree.

CodeRabbit: a pull request from this branch into a sibling fork lives in
that fork's /pulls, which the parent/source REST checks never list.
GraphQL Ref.associatedPullRequests(states: OPEN) counts open pull requests
whose head is this ref in any repository; a failed query or a missing
count refuses the deletion. The REST checks stay as a second source.
Also documents each helper function.

Independent review of b334eb0: GraphQL only counts pull requests in
repositories the token can read, so someone else's private sibling fork is
invisible. The comments now say so instead of "any repository". A failed
GraphQL query now puts gh's error text in the refusal and job summary.

Independent Claude review of b334eb0 (the GraphQL fork-network check), and fixes in 071ec0e

The reviewer read the gh v2.89.0 and go-gh v2.13.0 sources and simulated the failure paths with a stub. No must-fix findings.

# Severity Finding Status
1 Should-fix GraphQL only counts pull requests in repositories the token can read. A PR into someone else's private sibling fork is invisible, so the comments shouldn't say "any repository". Documented. The script and workflow headers now say "the fork network the token can read (…; someone else's private fork is invisible to it)". This residual risk is accepted, because it can't be closed with any token. A private parent or source still fails closed through the REST check (404).
2 Nit A failed GraphQL query dropped gh's error text from the refusal and the job summary. Fixed: stderr is captured and cleaned into the message. Test: a GraphQL error is refused and the message carries the text.
3 Nit If the branch vanishes between the reads, ref comes back null and the message says "no count". Left as is. It fails closed, which is correct.
4 Nit first: 1 isn't needed for totalCount. Kept; it's harmless.

Verified:

  • -f owner/name/ref become GraphQL variables. The {owner} placeholders are filled only for -F.
  • gh exits 1 on a top-level errors array, even on HTTP 200, and --jq isn't run.
  • --jq on a null path prints an empty string, which the numeric check refuses.
  • || fail sits outside $(…), so it exits the main shell.

Does Ref.associatedPullRequests see cross-repository PRs? Yes for the parent: a public live example and GitLens's production use, both cited in the review. Sibling forks are likely, with medium confidence. I'll confirm the parent case for real after merge: a dry run on rishitank/openapi-sampler fix/xml-root-and-composition, the head of the open Redocly/openapi-sampler#223, must be refused by the GraphQL line.

Verification on 071ec0e:

  • 44/44 stub checks pass.
  • shellcheck, actionlint 1.7.7 and zizmor --offline are clean.
  • The blob SHAs on the branch match the local files (dc87006, a074ffc).
