Why

Merged PR branches pile up. GitHub has no account-wide setting to delete them: "Automatically delete head branches" is a per-repository toggle, and it deletes every merged head branch with no exceptions. Private repositories on the Free plan can't protect branches, so that toggle could delete a long-lived branch such as develop the first time it is merged as a PR head.

This workflow does the cleanup with an explicit allowlist instead.

What changed

  • New .github/workflows/branch-cleanup.yml. Self-contained, no reusable workflow. This is the shared-workflow repo, but its own main is ruleset-blocked, so this lands as a plain per-repo copy like everywhere else.
    • Trigger: pull_request closed. The one job runs only when the PR was merged and its head is in this repository (never a fork's branch).
    • Keeps the head branch, with a ::notice::, when it is the default branch, or one of main, master, develop, staging, test, gh-pages, deploy-*, release/*, or when any open PR still uses it as its base.
    • Otherwise deletes it with gh api -X DELETE repos/$REPO/git/refs/heads/<ref>, the ref URL-encoded with jq @uri. "Reference does not exist" (422) or a 404 counts as success, since the branch is already gone.
    • Permissions: workflow default {}; the job gets contents: write (delete the ref) and pull-requests: read (the open-PR check). timeout-minutes: 2.
    • No ${{ }} in run:. Every event value reaches the shell through env: and is quoted.
  • Checked locally: actionlint and shellcheck are clean. The script was run against a stub gh for the default branch, each allowlisted name, a branch with open child PRs, a ref containing /, a space and #, an already-deleted ref (422 and 404), and a 403, which fails the job.
  • The live proof is ci: delete a PR's head branch after it merges, with an allowlist test#15: merging it should delete its own ci/branch-cleanup branch.

Caution specific to this repo

Other repos pin reusable workflows here by commit SHA on unmerged branches: runtime-gate.yml@f5b19aff… is the head of feat/runtime-gate (#6). Once this workflow is on main, squash-merging #6 deletes feat/runtime-gate, and f5b19aff is then reachable only through refs/pull/6/head, not from any branch. Before merging #6, repin consumers to the squash commit on main (or a tag), or merge #6 with a merge commit so the pinned SHAs stay on main's history.

GitHub has no account-wide setting for this, the per-repo toggle deletes
every merged head branch, and Free-plan private repos cannot protect
long-lived branches such as develop. This self-contained workflow runs
on merged same-repo PRs and deletes the head branch unless it is the
default branch, one of main/master/develop/staging/test/gh-pages/
deploy-*/release/*, or the base of another open PR. A branch that is
already gone counts as success.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Automatically removes merged pull request branches unless they are protected or used as the base branch of an open pull request.

Walkthrough

Adds a workflow that runs when a pull request closes. If it was merged and its head branch is in the current repository, the workflow retains protected branches and open pull request base branches, then deletes other head branches.

Changes

Merged pull request branch cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow trigger and permissions
.github/workflows/branch-cleanup.yml
The workflow runs for closed pull requests. Its job requires a merged pull request and a head repository that matches the current repository. The job has a two-minute timeout and requests contents write and pull requests read permissions.
Branch retention and deletion
.github/workflows/branch-cleanup.yml
The workflow retains the default branch, named long-lived branches, configured branch patterns, and branches used as bases for open pull requests. It deletes other head branches. A missing ref produces a notice; other API errors fail the step.

The new cleanup workflow can delete a branch that still backs another open pull request. It can also delete a branch that received new commits after the merge. Deleted branches can usually be restored, but work may be disrupted. Add a head-PR check and a SHA comparison before merging.

- Line 54: Update the branch-protection check in the cleanup workflow to query
open pull requests by the same-repository head branch using gh pr list’s --head
filter, rather than filtering by base with --base. Use that result to retain
HEAD_REF whenever an open pull request still uses it as its head.
- Line 61: Update the branch deletion step using `ref` so it receives
`github.event.pull_request.head.sha`, fetches the current ref’s commit SHA, and
deletes the branch only when the SHAs match; otherwise retain the branch.

From CodeRabbit review: keep the branch when another open PR uses it as
its head; read the branch's current SHA first and keep it if it moved
past the merged PR head (REST has no conditional delete, so only the
instant between read and DELETE is unguarded); comment each permission.

Closing as redundant. Merged branches are now handled account-wide by the nightly branch-prune workflow in rishitank/.github (it also switches on Automatically delete head branches for every repository), so a per-repository workflow isn't needed and would spend Actions minutes in private repositories. Closed, not merged; the branch is left in place.
