Docs: Add a local-model guide and the links that find it - #1436
Conversation
Running an agent on a local inference server was documented only in fragments: the command half in agentop's README, pull lines inside the Kubernetes demos, nothing anywhere on installing the server, choosing a model, or raising the context window — and no link to any of it from where a user is when a provider is out. docs/laptop-local-model.md walks the whole path with granite4.2:8b as the reference model, every fact measured or verified live: Ollama serves both API dialects natively so no translation gateway is needed, thinking is on by default and separated (granite3.3's leak is why 4.2 is the reference), a fresh install's 4096-token window silently trims an agent's opening turn and OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTH raises it with `ollama ps` as the check, 27 GB resident at full context. Six links make it findable: the README's Learn more, the docs index's Getting Started table, the claude-code and opencode switching sections (previously LiteLLM-only in their framing), agentop's Local model servers section (whose example also said granite3.3), and `agentop server --help`. A well-sourced guide, and all six links resolve. Four claims don't match what the code or current Ollama does. None is blocking, but since the PR says every fact was measured, they're worth fixing before people land on this page mid-outage. The most important is the first: the full tag doesn't pin, and a bare granite picks granite3.3.

| - `--main` and `--helper` are model words. `add` reads the server's model | ||

suggestion: The full tag doesn't pin. routerconfig.Resolve matches on substring and ranks matches by the standalone numbers in the name, using length only to break a tie. Measured against Resolve on this branch:
granite4.2:8bwithgranite4.2:8b-q8_0also pulled →granite4.2:8b-q8_0(the trailing0outranks); the same withgranite4.2:8b-instruct-q4_0- a bare
granitewithgranite3.3:latestandgranite4.2:8b→granite3.3:latest, becausegranite4isn't a standalone number. That is the very model this page warns against.
Suggest something like: "give the full tag; add prints what each word names, and pulling another tag of the model can move it." The ranking for Ollama-style names probably wants a separate fix in Resolve.

| ### Context length | ||
|
|
||
| This is the one setting that matters. A fresh Ollama install runs every model |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
suggestion: The 4096 default is not universal. Since Ollama 0.15.5 the default window depends on detected GPU memory (server/routes.go): 4k below about 23 GiB, 32k up to about 47 GiB, 262144 above (see https://docs.ollama.com/context-length). On Apple silicon that is unified memory, so a 64 GB Mac already gets the full window, and a 36 GB Mac gets 32k, which is under the 64k this page says Claude Code needs. The advice holds; only "every install runs 4096" is off. Something like "a fresh install picks its window from the machine's memory — 4k below 24 GB — and…" would keep the warning accurate. ollama ps stays the check.
| Raise the window to the model's full 131k and restart the server: | ||
|
|
||
| ```sh | ||
| launchctl setenv OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTH 131072 # the macOS app; restart it after |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
suggestion: Neither command works on a default install.
- macOS: once the app's Settings → Context length slider is set, the app overwrites
OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTHwhen it startsollama serve(app/server/server.go:263), solaunchctl setenvis ignored. The slider is also the method Ollama's own docs give for the app, andlaunchctl setenvis lost at reboot. - Linux:
install.shcreatesollama.service, which already holds :11434, soollama servefrom a shell fails with "address already in use". The fix there issudo systemctl edit ollama.service, adding[Service]/Environment="OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTH=131072", thensudo systemctl restart ollama.
| word's model: one refused round trip, then the substitute is remembered | ||
| for an hour and sent from the start, and the session keeps the model it | ||
| was given. | ||
| - **Where it shows.** agentop's sessions table carries a `SERVER` column |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
suggestion: The SERVER column may not appear. It shows only when the router has more than one server (cmd/agentop/tui/server_route.go:195), and it is dropped on a narrow terminal. Someone who added only ollama because their provider is down won't see it. Worth a clause: "once more than one server is configured".
…aims Review on rossoctl#1436 found four claims that current Ollama or the code contradict: - A fresh install's window is not always 4096: since 0.15.5 it is picked from GPU memory (4k below ~24 GB, 32k below ~48 GB, full above), and on Apple silicon that is unified memory. A 36 GB Mac gets 32k, still under Claude Code's opening turn. - launchctl setenv is overridden by the macOS app's Context length slider once that is set, and is lost at reboot; the slider is the method. On Linux the installer's ollama.service already holds :11434, so the variable goes on the unit via systemctl edit. - The full tag does not pin: Resolve ranks substring matches by the standalone numbers in the name, so granite4.2:8b-q8_0 outranks granite4.2:8b and a bare granite names granite3.3. Checked against Resolve on this branch. - The sessions table's SERVER column needs more than one server and room on the terminal; the agents pane's is the one that always shows. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Describe pinning by the first request that decides the session.
Non-deciding requests can reach a server without pinning the session. The session is pinned when the first inference request decides it, so the current wording can give users the wrong server assignment.
