feat(x509): evaluate delta CRLs and cut verify overhead - #350
X.509 path validation evaluates a delta CRL together with its complete CRL instead of refusing every delta as unpaired.
verify does less work on large documents: per-parse indexes, per-element hash tables and duplicated strings are gone, and SignedInfo no longer walks the whole document.
Changes
verify_crls binds each authenticated delta to the complete CRL of its issuer through the shared PKIX mechanism. The newest bound delta decides by CRL number and its window governs the pair; an applicable delta bound to nothing fails closed.
Parsing no longer builds the document-order and attribute-value indexes. node_for_id walks the document once per query.
The semantic tree shares namespace binding lists between elements, reaches children through the preorder arena, and takes xmloxide text by move.
Canonicalization keeps short prefix maps inline, checks relative namespace URIs once per document, and canonicalizes SignedInfo from its own subtree when signing and verifying.
Projection::project in the benchmark hooks consumes its prepared tree, so each sample prepares one.
The scanner reuses its attribute buffer on unaccounted parses; accounted parses release it between tags. Name scanning no longer repeats its work.
Testing
Tests, lints and formatting pass on macOS across the library, CLI, PKCS#11 and the minimal feature sets, with the xmlsec1 oracle; delta CRL fixtures are issued and cross-checked by OpenSSL. CI runs the full gates on Linux and Windows.
Certificate revocation checks now support delta CRLs when paired with a complete CRL, including applying updates that add or remove revocations.
XML signature processing now handles canonicalization of selected subtrees.
Bug Fixes
Revocation checks reject applicable delta CRLs when their required complete CRL is missing, and account for CRL validity periods and revocation timing.
Documentation
Updated CRL guidance to describe delta CRL requirements and behavior.
CRL checking refused every delta as unpaired, even beside its complete
CRL. Each authenticated delta now binds to the complete CRL of its issuer
through the shared mechanism. The newest bound delta decides, by CRL number,
and its window governs the pair: a current delta keeps an expired complete
CRL usable, an expired one is refused. An applicable delta that binds to
nothing still fails closed.
OpenSSL-issued fixtures carry its own verifier's answer for both outcomes.
Closes#346
Every owned-document parse hashed each node into an order table, but
the arena stores subtrees contiguously in preorder, so a node's arena
index already is its document position. document_order now returns it
directly; a debug assertion keeps the invariant checked while the
remaining indexes are built.
Parse p50 on the saml shape with 16384 units: 39.7 -> 37.0 ms
(xmloxide), 30.3 -> 28.6 ms (roxmltree).
Part of #340
Profiling verify on the SAML shape with 16384 units showed 14% of the
time in SipHash and 19% in the allocator.
Every parse copied and hashed each attribute name and value into an index
that only node_for_id reads; that lookup now walks the document once.
Canonicalization built and copied a hash map per element for a handful of
prefixes. The map now holds up to six bindings inline and moves to the
keyed table beyond that, so a document declaring many prefixes keeps
constant-time lookups.
Verify p50 on that shape, macOS arm64: about 59 -> 50 ms from serialized
input, 21.5 -> 14.4 ms on a parsed document.

Walkthrough
This pull request adds complete-and-delta CRL evaluation and subtree-apex canonicalization. It also changes XML parsing, semantic-tree storage, document ID lookup, namespace handling, and projection benchmark setup.
Changes: Delta CRL evaluation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Authenticate and evaluate CRL pairs src/xmldsig/pkix.rs
CRL verification authenticates candidate lists, selects the newest bound delta, and evaluates the combined evidence, freshness, and revocation dates.
Test and document delta-CRL behavior tests/delta_crl.rs, scripts/generate-delta-crl-fixtures.sh, docs/key-management.md, docs/xmldsig.md
Tests and generated fixtures cover paired-list results, binding rules, validity windows, and chain position. The documentation describes complete-and-delta evaluation and its constraints.
Subtree-apex canonicalization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and serialize subtree visibility src/c14n/mod.rs, src/c14n/serialize.rs
Canonicalization accepts an optional subtree apex and can start serialization there. It validates namespace URIs across the document.
Use subtree visibility in XMLDSig src/xmldsig/builder.rs, src/xmldsig/sign.rs, src/xmldsig/verify.rs, src/xml/dom/tree.rs, src/xmldsig/extension/tree.rs
XMLDSig canonicalization uses the SignedInfo subtree apex instead of collected descendant IDs.
Store native namespace bindings src/c14n/scratch.rs, src/c14n/scratch/namespace_tests.rs
Native namespace bindings use inline storage until the inline capacity is exceeded, with tests for insertion, replacement, and removal.
Qualified-name validation scans bytes, ASCII name scanning uses a lookup table, and cleared attribute buffers can be reused. The xmloxide parser patch also changes parser storage, entity expansion, and borrowed-input handling.
Project owned parser output and shared namespaces src/xml/dom/xmloxide.rs, src/xml/dom/roxmltree.rs, src/xml/dom/tree.rs
The xmloxide adapter consumes parser output and adopts payloads into target storage. The roxmltree adapter can reuse matching namespace sets.
Use preorder ranges and shared namespace sets src/xml/dom/tree.rs, src/xml/dom/tree/comparison.rs
The semantic tree uses preorder storage, direct-child counts, and shared namespace sets. Traversal and comparison use that representation.
Resolve IDs without retained indexes src/document.rs, src/collections.rs, src/xml.rs
Document construction no longer builds retained indexes. ID lookup scans descendants and attributes, and document order uses the node arena index.
Prepare a projection for each measurement src/benchmark_support.rs, src/xml/dom/benchmark.rs, examples/benchmark_latency.rs, benches/security.rs
Projection consumes its prepared tree. The benchmark paths prepare a new projection for each measurement or sample.

Explanation
The changes remain within [#346] and [#340]. CRL fixtures, dependency updates, and CRL tests support delta-CRL evaluation. Tree storage, namespace sharing, scanner reuse, text adoption, canonicalization, benchmark preparation, and related tests support reduced XML parsing or verification overhead. No unrelated feature or policy change is shown.

Explanation
The implementation and tests satisfy the coding objectives in [#346]. The summary shows issuer matching, delta binding, newest-delta selection, update-window handling, removeFromCRL, fail-closed unbound deltas, public-chain tests, and updated CRL documentation. The changes also satisfy the code behavior requested in [#340]: they remove the retained indexes, derive document order from preorder storage, and walk attributes for ID resolution. However, the required before-and-after parse and verify p50 measurements for the 16,384-unit SAML shape and both backends are not established. The PR description reports test results but no measurements.
Resolution
Provide reviewable before-and-after parse and verify p50 measurements for the 16,384-unit SAML shape with both XML backends, or provide evidence that these required measurements already exist.
