knowledgator/gliclass-large-v1.0 sets adaptive_batching.enabled: false on its default profile. That turns the adaptive batching controller off for this model only. Encode and score batching are unchanged.

Refs #390

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Configuration
    • Added an adaptive batching option, disabled by default.

Refs superlinked#390

Starvation was cost-order, not inference time: cheaper items kept filling
max_batch_cost, so a high-cost extract request never reached the front even
though the GPU work itself is only seconds.

📝 Walkthrough

The GLiClass default profile adds an adaptive_batching setting. It is disabled by default. Comments describe comparing request latency, including queue time, with a target and shrinking batches under load.

Add the adaptive batching setting
packages/sie_server/models/knowledgator__gliclass-large-v1.0.yaml
The default profile adds adaptive_batching with enabled: false. Comments describe its latency-based controller and batch shrinking under load.

Suggested reviewers: shaishmuel

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 9225a

GLiClass uses the profile’s adaptive-batching opt-out as configured. No actionable current-head merge risk remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9225a

This narrowly scoped configuration change disables automatic batch adjustment for one workload while preserving configured queue and batch limits. No expanded privileges or cross-service access were identified. Production load effects and deployment-specific exposure remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated behavioral exposure is direct HTTP batching for workers resolving the changed profile, including profiles that inherit its opt-out. The source does not establish deployment-specific tenant or shared-GPU exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The loader preserves configured queue, request-count, wait, and batch-token settings while disabling adaptive adjustment. A profile cannot override an engine-wide disabled setting to enable the controller.

an item is promoted after 15 ms (max_batch_wait_ms), so under load nearly every batch is “oldest plus cheapest”. That affects encode and score too, not just extract. There are no throughput numbers, the Rust sidecar batcher isn’t changed, and the tests can hang. Trying the #648 setting on GLiClass would be a better first step.

… window"

The 15ms promotion is reverted because it reschedules encode and score, not only extract.

This reverts commit 70408e9.
…-large-v1.0

Refs superlinked#390

This follows the superlinked#648 profile setting instead of a global batcher change.

The scheduler change is reverted for the reason in the review: promoting a request after 15 ms reschedules encode and score, not only extract, and under load nearly every batch is the oldest item plus cheaper work. The replacement is the profile setting from #648. Adaptive batching is turned off on knowledgator/gliclass-large-v1.0 only, and the other GLiClass catalogs are unchanged.

packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_batcher.py passes as on main (89 passed). The shipped model schema check passes, and the GLiClass test that loads the profile YAML still passes. No throughput numbers are claimed.

Thanks for reverting the scheduler change. The PR is now the 4-line adaptive_batching.enabled: false on knowledgator/gliclass-large-v1.0, which is the same shape as #648. To merge it we need the evidence #648 came with:

  1. Measurements. #648 had a one-L4 benchmark (base vs change at several in-flight levels over steady intervals) and an output-equivalence check. Could you run the same protocol for this model, plus the #390 reproduction with timeout counts before and after? Without that we cannot tell whether this resolves #390, so "Refs #390" fits better than a fix claim.
  2. Scope. 20 profiles under packages/sie_server/models/ use the GLiClass adapter, and only one changes here. If the numbers hold, please either apply it to all of them or explain why only this one.

Please also trim the description to the final change, since it still opens with the reverted scheduler work.

The 15 ms scheduler promotion stays reverted. packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/core/batcher.py still matches main, and the net diff against cfaafe35 is the one profile YAML file.

Measurements. Not run, and none are claimed. #648 used one L4, base vs change, several in-flight levels, steady intervals, and an output-equivalence check. #390 also needs timeout counts before and after. This machine has no NVIDIA GPU, so that protocol cannot be run here.

$ zsh -f -c 'nvidia-smi; echo EXIT:$?'
zsh:1: command not found: nvidia-smi
EXIT:127
$ zsh -f -c 'command -v nvidia-smi; echo COMMAND_V_EXIT:$?'
COMMAND_V_EXIT:1
$ uname -sm
Darwin arm64

No benchmark was run. There are no throughput, latency, or timeout numbers for this change.

Scope. 20 catalogs under packages/sie_server/models/ set sie_server.adapters.gliclass:GLiClassAdapter. Only knowledgator/gliclass-large-v1.0 changes. #390 names that model. The other 19 stay unchanged until the same protocol #648 used has been run. The flag is not applied to them here, because those measurements do not exist.

Description. It now describes only that YAML change and uses Refs #390. It no longer opens with the reverted scheduler.
