Summary

Runtime values across the output-oriented webGUI pages are now kept as data until they reach the DOM or an encoded attribute, preserving existing behavior while making rendering independent of input contents.

Why This Exists

Several pages were assembling markup or script arguments directly from names, statuses, paths, and update metadata. This made valid runtime values containing markup-like characters alter the rendered page.

Resolution

The changes use structured JSON responses, DOM text nodes, textContent, encoded attributes, and JSON-encoded handler arguments.

Reviewer Considerations

  • Review the data-to-DOM boundaries in the file manager, plugin, Docker, wireless, UPS, VM, and logging pages.
  • The commits remain one issue per commit so each behavior can be reviewed independently.
  • No automated tests were added; the verification below is manual functional coverage as requested.

Behavior Changes

  • Runtime values display literally when they contain markup-like characters.
  • File previews, queued jobs, share listings, plugin updates, Docker status, and UPS details retain their existing workflows.

Implementation Summary

  • OS-902, OS-904, OS-905, OS-911, and OS-912: structured responses and text-based rendering for wireless, logging, VM, UPS, and file-manager output.
  • OS-913 and OS-923: plain-text Docker tooltip and plugin-update rendering with encoded handler arguments.
  • OS-919, OS-920, and OS-921: runtime viewer paths and encoded file/share attributes.

Verification

  • git diff --check origin/master...HEAD passed.
  • Manual functional checks completed on Unraid 7.4.0-beta.3 using storage-backed QAVM fixtures for OS-904, OS-912, OS-913, OS-919, OS-920, OS-921, and OS-923.
  • OS-905 passed in the earlier VM functional run.
  • OS-911 passed in the later APC-emulator run; OS-902 was not exercised because the disposable profile had no wlan0.

Related Linear issues: OS-902, OS-904, OS-905, OS-911, OS-912, OS-913, OS-919, OS-920, OS-921, OS-923.

Risk

Moderate; the changes span several shared webGUI rendering paths. The affected flows were checked against the available runtime fixtures.

Walkthrough

UPS status, scheduled jobs, and wireless network responses now use structured data for client-side rendering. Other UI paths build content with DOM APIs, display tooltip text, or escape values before rendering.

Changes

Structured UI rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
UPS status response and rendering
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.apcupsd/include/UPSstatus.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.apcupsd/UPSdetails.page
The endpoint returns summary and detail records as JSON. The polling page builds the status tables from those records.
Scheduled jobs response and rendering
emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/Control.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/Templates.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix/Browse.page
The jobs mode returns JSON records. The page renders job rows or an empty state after retrieval or deletion.
Wireless response and rendering
emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/Wireless.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix/Wireless.page
The wireless endpoint returns structured network sections. The page builds the sections and binds network actions.
File viewer and editor source paths
emhttp/plugins/dynamix/Browse.page, emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/Templates.php
The file browser temporarily stores the selected source path on window.dfm_file_source. The editor and viewer templates use that value.

Safe UI output handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
DOM-built and text-based content
emhttp/logging.htm, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.plugin.manager/PluginHelpers.page, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.vm.manager/spice.html
The log close control and plugin update messages use DOM elements. The VM hostname is assigned with textContent.
Plain-text Docker tooltips
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/include/DockerContainers.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/DockerContainers.page, emhttp/plugins/dynamix/styles/default-dynamix.css
Docker tooltip details are assembled as plain text and escaped before being placed in the tooltip attribute. Tooltip content preserves source line breaks.
Escaped values and DOM content
emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/Browse.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/ShareList.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix/javascript/EZView.js
File extensions and share names are escaped before rendering. EZView creates image and PDF content with DOM elements.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 51cff

File previews retain their existing behavior while rendering selected paths without reparsing them as HTML. No actionable merge risk remains from the selected change.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 587ce

The changes remove several direct markup-rendering paths, but file preview still has a potentially exploitable filename-to-markup path. The available comparison indicates that exposure predates this PR; who can supply a filename viewed by another user remains unestablished.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported attack surface is the emhttp file-preview flow. The evidence does not establish who can create a filename later previewed by another user, so independent-user and deployment-wide exposure cannot be quantified.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Two verified findings concern the filename-derived viewer URL reaching preview markup. EZView’s new text-node serialization protects text metacharacters but does not encode a quotation mark for its quoted src attribute; the resulting string is parsed when appended. The base viewer also interpolated the selected path into markup, so this review does not attribute the exposure to the PR.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The file row HTML-encodes its filename attribute and the changed viewer template uses setAttribute rather than inserting the filename into template markup. Those controls do not themselves protect EZView’s subsequent HTML-string sink after the attribute value has been read.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Construct the preview image or iframe as a DOM element and assign its src through the DOM API, rather than serializing a URL into quoted HTML.

Address OS-919 and CodeRabbit review feedback by creating preview elements directly and assigning their source through setAttribute. This prevents the viewer from reparsing filename data as HTML.
