Summary

  • HUD drag on X11: the non-focusable HUD is override-redirect, so the window manager ignores -webkit-app-region drags. Native app-region dragging is now used only on Wayland. On X11 the fallback HUD window moves through the existing hud-overlay-drag IPC with setBounds(). A dragged position also survives later bounds updates, such as when recording starts.
  • X11 detection: isLinuxX11Session() reads the --ozone-platform / --ozone-platform-hint switch first, so a Wayland session launched with --ozone-platform=x11 (XWayland) is treated as X11. It no longer reads ELECTRON_OZONE_PLATFORM_HINT, which Electron 43 ignores.
  • GPU on X11: stop forcing --use-gl=egl. Electron 43 only allows ANGLE, so the GPU process exited and WebGL/WebGPU weren't available in the editor.
  • Renamed shouldForceLinuxEgl to isLinuxX11Session and updated its tests.

Rebased onto current main. The earlier X11 screen-capture change was dropped: main already handles it through resolveDisplayMediaSource.

Test plan

  • vitest (gpuSwitches, hudOverlayBounds, hudOverlayWindowOptions, sourceMapping), tsc --noEmit, biome
  • Manual on X11: drag the HUD while idle and while recording, open the editor (WebGL)
  • Manual on Wayland with --ozone-platform=x11: HUD drag uses the X11 path
  • Manual on Wayland: HUD drag still uses compositor dragging; portal capture unchanged

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved HUD dragging on Linux, with behavior adapted for Wayland and X11 display sessions.
    • Preserved the saved HUD position when fallback resizing is used on platforms without mouse-passthrough support.
    • Updated Linux graphics handling to avoid forcing EGL and to disable VA-API video decoding and encoding, improving compatibility across display setups.

Walkthrough

Linux GPU switches no longer force EGL. HUD drag handling distinguishes Wayland from X11, reports whether native dragging is required, and routes drag events based on that result and mouse-passthrough support.

Changes: Linux GPU behavior and HUD dragging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Linux session detection and GPU switches
electron/gpuSwitches.ts, electron/gpuSwitches.test.ts
The session helper identifies X11 sessions. Linux GPU switches retain the VA-API feature disables without forcing EGL, and tests check session detection and switch behavior.
Electron HUD drag capability and bounds
electron/electron-env.d.ts, electron/windows.ts
The mouse-passthrough response includes nativeDrag. Electron reports when compositor-driven dragging is required, uses bounds-based dragging on Linux X11, and preserves the saved HUD position when resizing without mouse passthrough.
Launch-window HUD drag routing
src/components/launch/hooks/useLaunchWindowSystemState.ts, src/components/launch/LaunchWindow.tsx, src/components/launch/hooks/useHudBarDrag.ts
The system-state hook exposes the native-drag requirement. The launch window passes drag settings to the hook, which sends window-drag events or adjusts the bar offset.

On X11 the non-focusable HUD window is override-redirect, so the window
manager ignores -webkit-app-region drags. Only use native app-region
dragging on Wayland; on X11 move the fallback HUD window through the
existing hud-overlay-drag IPC with setBounds(), and keep a user-dragged
position when the HUD bounds are re-applied.

Stop forcing --use-gl=egl on X11: Electron 43 only allows ANGLE, so the
GPU process exits and WebGL/WebGPU become unavailable to the editor.

A Wayland session launched with --ozone-platform=x11 runs under XWayland,
but the session environment still reports Wayland, so the HUD picked
compositor dragging that X11 ignores. Read --ozone-platform (and
--ozone-platform-hint) from argv first, and stop reading
ELECTRON_OZONE_PLATFORM_HINT, which Electron 43 ignores.

Ignore the removed Ozone hint when selecting HUD dragging.

On Electron 43, --ozone-platform-hint=x11 no longer selects X11. If a Wayland user retains that flag, this function reports X11. electron/windows.ts then selects the setBounds() drag path, which cannot move the Wayland HUD. Remove this lookup and update the hint test in electron/gpuSwitches.test.ts. (github.com)

Remove the OZONE_PLATFORM backend fallback.

Electron 43 does not use OZONE_PLATFORM to select the Ozone backend. With XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland and OZONE_PLATFORM=x11, this helper selects the X11 HUD drag path while Electron uses Wayland. Remove this lookup. Update the tests so OZONE_PLATFORM does not override the session type.

Align the fallback with Electron’s X11 selection.

When XDG_SESSION_TYPE is unset and WAYLAND_DISPLAY is set, Electron selects X11, but isLinuxX11Session returns false. The HUD then enables -webkit-app-region: drag, and the main-process drag handler skips setBounds(). The HUD cannot move on X11.
