Keep white balance correction working with Calculate CCT from RGB - #5894
dustinreed-info wants to merge 5 commits into
Conversation
RGB white balance was applied before the white channel was extracted, so
enabling it changed how much white RGBW and CCT outputs produced. In
Accurate mode at 2700K, gray 200 became white 68 plus an orange RGB tint
(132,62,0) instead of white 200.
Extract white first, then balance only the remaining RGB, on digital,
PWM and network outputs. Keep RGB white balance active when physical
whites derive their temperature from RGB ("calculate CCT from RGB").

WalkthroughBus white-balance state can now be derived from RGB CCT and used for RGB correction on digital, PWM, and network buses. Pixel output allocates CCT data for white-balance correction and restores the previous white-balance value after output. ChangesRGB white-balance correction
Priority: ⬇️ Low Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~12 minutes Change: Bug fix Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to On affected 5-channel PWM installations, the remaining RGB can retain an uncorrected tint while the warm/cool white output is unaffected. The impact is configuration-specific, so merge risk is low, but apply correction to the remaining RGB for that setup. Pre-merge checks |

The 5-channel PWM type was excluded from RGB white balance, presumably because applying it before white extraction distorted the whites. With white now extracted first, its RGB channels can be balanced like digital RGB+CCT outputs, while WW/CW stay independent.
isn't this the point of white balance correction? |
Review feedback: on single-white outputs white balance is how the CCT slider tints white, so it must stay before white extraction. Only CCT outputs (digital RGB+CCT, 5-channel PWM), whose WW/CW already carry the temperature, extract white first and balance the remaining RGB.

Can you explain what you are trying to solve with this PR? i.e. why would you use white balance correction if you do not want white balance correction but have CCT? |
|
@coderabbitai in which LEDs configuration (see wled00/data/settings_leds.htm) would the proposed change be a visible improvement? |

I checked 1. Digital RGB+CCT: white without an added RGB tintUse this configuration in LED Preferences:
Then display a gray color, such as RGB
The intended visible benefit is more output from the physical white LEDs and no unwanted RGB remainder for gray input. The actual brightness and color difference depend on the LEDs. This answers DedeHai’s question: white balance still sets the white temperature through WW/CW. The change avoids also simulating that temperature with RGB for the extracted gray component. 2. PWM RGBCCT: correction of the remaining RGBFor PWM RGBCCT, enable White Balance correction and use a color that leaves RGB after white extraction. The PR makes that remaining RGB respond to the segment temperature. Previously, The gray example above does not demonstrate a PWM improvement. PWM RGBCCT already extracted gray into its white channels. The new behavior affects the remaining RGB, not the extracted white. 3. “Calculate CCT from RGB” enabledWith both Calculate CCT from RGB and White Balance correction enabled, the PR separates two controls:
This can help when the user wants RGB-derived white temperature and segment-controlled RGB correction. It is a new control behavior, not an unconditional color-quality improvement. For single-white types such as “SK6812/WS2814 RGBW” and “PWM RGBW,” the PR retains correction before white extraction. Those types do not receive the main improvement described in section 1. These conclusions come from the code paths. I did not verify the appearance on physical LEDs. 🧠 Learnings usedYou are interacting with an AI system. |
Review feedback: restore the existing white balance order on all outputs. Only keep RGB white balance working when "Calculate CCT from RGB" is enabled; previously the per-pixel CCT was not kept in that mode, so white balance correction was silently disabled for every output.

Fair question. The order change had no real use case behind it, so I've dropped it. What's left is a bug: with "Calculate CCT from RGB" enabled, White Balance correction does nothing on any output, because show() doesn't keep the per-pixel CCT in that mode and calls setSegmentCCT(-1). That matters when CCT strips (where CCT from RGB is useful) share a controller with RGB/RGBW strips that use white balance. The PR now only fixes that; the order and the set of corrected outputs are unchanged. Tested on a WS2805 strip: with both settings on, CCT 0 vs 255 now visibly changes the RGB tint; before, it had no effect. |
With "Calculate CCT from RGB" enabled, "White Balance correction" was silently disabled for every output.
show()did not keep per-pixel CCT in that mode and calledsetSegmentCCT(-1), so no output received a Kelvin value to correct with. This matters for setups that mix CCT strips (where CCT from RGB is useful) with RGB/RGBW strips that rely on white balance. The segment CCT is now kept when white balance correction is enabled, and its Kelvin value is passed to the outputs separately from the CCT used for the physical whites (
Bus::setWhiteBalance()/getWhiteBalance()). The white balance order and the set of corrected output types are unchanged.Testing
