full rewrite of the FX with the help of claude.ai

  • cuts code size in half
  • RAM use only for the binary array, get rid of the 1k color array
  • Add "flash mode"
  • color slider now actually does change color (hue spacing) - set color slider to 0 for "color by word"

the rest of the effect is unchanged.

Fixes #5876

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Morse Code lighting effect that displays a scrolling or flashing message based on the segment name, or a default message when no name is set.
    • The effect supports color options, punctuation, and an optional end-of-message signal. Unsupported characters are skipped.

Walkthrough

The Morse Code effect was removed from the user effects module and added to core effects. It encodes segment text as Morse and renders flashing or scrolling patterns. The effect is registered under FX_MODE_MORSECODE.

Changes

Morse Code effect

Layer / File(s) Summary
Effect ID declaration
wled00/FX.h
FX_MODE_MORSECODE is defined as ID 221, and MODE_COUNT increases to 222. A commented-out effect ID definition is removed.
Core effect implementation and migration
wled00/FX.cpp, usermods/user_fx/user_fx.cpp
Core effects encode segment text as a bit-packed Morse pattern and render flashing or scrolling patterns, with optional punctuation and an end marker. The effect is registered under FX_MODE_MORSECODE. Its implementation and registration are removed from the user effects module.

Morse Code now has a distinct effect ID, but non-ASCII segment names still need a small safety fix. The remaining risk is narrow.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Cast segment-name bytes before calling toupper and isalnum.

The JSON segment-name input can contain non-ASCII bytes. Passing a negative char to these ctype functions causes undefined behavior.

🐛 Suggested fix
-      char ch = toupper(*c);
+      int ch = toupper((unsigned char)*c);

In the segment-name processing code around the toupper call, convert each input
byte to unsigned char before passing it to toupper and isalnum. Keep the
character handling consistent across both ctype calls so non-ASCII input bytes
do not trigger undefined behavior.

Hi @DedeHai I'm not sure if I can test it unless I get a bin from you, because my fork is messed up and I can't compile it anymore. Could you send me an esp32dev bin?

If the intention was to simply get/set bit 3, the code can be simplified a lot,without doing left/right shifts

Setting bit 3 : x = x | 0x04
Getting bit 3: (x & 0x04) != 0

Ah ok.

I can remember that the game of life effect also has a bit array get/set macro, there is another one in busmanger.h for the hub75 driver, and a third one in pinManager ... Just to double-check if one of them could be re-used.

@DedeHai Thanks. I tried to do an OTA update with "WLED_17.0.0-devV5_ESP32.bin" but I get a "This site can’t be reached" web browser error a few seconds after I start the update. I waited a minute but it does not get updated. My current version is:

Installed version: WLED 17.0.0-dev (2602141) Release: ESP32_V4
Do I need to manually flash the V5 version? Or do I need a new bootloader for V5?
