Summary

  • Base light images (debian/13-trixie, debian/sid, astra/1.7-alse, astra/1.8-alse): ENV LANG=C.UTF-8 (was POSIX) - UTF-8 out of the box (Cyrillic in logs / CLIs). LC_ALL stays unset, so a child image or docker run -e LANG=... can override it.
  • etc/locale.gen: added uk_UA.UTF-8, de_DE.UTF-8, fr_FR.UTF-8.
  • Fatal assertions (new block on Debian light, extended on Astra): every generated locale is present, locale charmap = UTF-8, multibyte text is counted as characters.
  • Base READMEs document LANG=C.UTF-8 and the generated locales.

Cascades to every image built on base light.

Verified locally

  • trixie light: LANG=C.UTF-8, charmap UTF-8, Cyrillic output, -e LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8 override works; locale-archive 5.1 -> 8.4 MB.
  • Astra 1.7 / 1.8 light: assertions pass.

…, uk_UA / de_DE / fr_FR UTF-8 locales, fatal locale / UTF-8 assertions
