feat(ai-computer-sandbox, ai-sandbox-cloudflare, examples): sign in on a sandbox desktop without the model seeing the password - #1982
Try it: run examples/react/computer-use-login, ask the model to sign in to the test site, and type the password in the login card. The model drives a Chromium desktop in a Docker sandbox. It asks for a sign-in with a requestLogin tool, and the server fills the form. The model never sees the password. A user who comes back later is still signed in. A thread can keep its sandbox, or save Chromium's profile as a snapshot and restore it into a new sandbox on any provider.
The PR also fixes the Cloudflare sandbox provider. A command that called exit ended its shared shell session, so the sandbox computer driver did not work on Cloudflare.
🎯 Changes
New example examples/react/computer-use-login (harness computerUse() plugin, sandboxComputer with the Docker provider):
The requestLogin({ site }) tool stops the run with needsApproval. The UI shows a login card.
The card sends the username and password to a separate route, /api/login. That route keeps them in memory for 5 minutes and logs nothing. The approval answer is only true, so the harness log and the persistence keep no secret.
The tool runs sandbox/login.py in the container. The script opens the site, makes sure that the page origin is the approved origin, fills the form through the Chromium debugging port, sends it, then clears the password fields.
A tutorial page, docs/tutorials/computer-use-login.md.
sandboxComputer({ sandboxIds }) in @tanstack/ai-computer-sandbox. With this option, a thread keeps its sandbox when it goes idle. The next call of the thread reconnects with provider.resume. On E2B with onTimeout: 'pause', memory and disk come back, so the browser is still signed in.
sandboxComputer({ snapshots }) in @tanstack/ai-computer-sandbox. When a thread closes or goes idle, the driver saves the files of one folder with the portable snapshots from feat(ai): add durable sandbox file snapshots #1108. When the thread gets a new sandbox, the driver restores them. This works on every provider, also on Cloudflare, where the disk is empty after a restart. before and after hooks stop and start the program that writes in the folder. saveComputerSnapshot() saves at once, and the example calls it after each sign-in. @tanstack/ai-sandbox now exports captureSandboxFiles and restoreSandboxFiles, the feat(ai): add durable sandbox file snapshots #1108 functions that the driver uses.
Cloudflare provider fix.exec and spawn now run each command in a subshell. Before, a command with exit ended the shared session, and every later command failed.
Two choices differ from the first plan:
The pause is a needsApproval tool, not a custom interrupt. It reaches useChat as a typed approval card, and the answer holds no secret.
The debugging-port client runs in the sandbox, not on the server. Docker publishes ports on every interface, so a server-side connection puts an open debugging port for a signed-in browser on the LAN. The password goes in the environment of one process, never on a command line.
kiira check on the changed docs, and oxfmt --check on the changed files
No E2E test was added. The E2E suite runs computer use only with Playwright drivers, and aimock cannot fake a Docker or E2B sandbox that pauses and resumes. Unit tests cover the resume decisions, the snapshot save and restore order, and the subshell wrap.
Live checks:
A full run with the real model against the dev server. The model asked for a sign-in, the card sent the login, and the tool reached the "Secure Area" page. The password was not in the transcript, the snapshot, the event log, or the server log.
A sign-in test without the model, on a real container. The right password signs in, a wrong password stays on the form, and a page with no form fails with a clear error. After the container restarted, provider.resume brought back a browser that was still signed in.
A snapshot test on Docker. The driver made container A, and the tool signed in. The save captured 16 files (47 KB). Then container A was destroyed. The driver made container B, restored the profile, and the site still showed the Secure Area.
A Cloudflare benchmark Worker ran the driver's commands, which call exit, with no workaround. The session stayed alive. The Worker is deleted.
Manual test.
Start Docker, then run pnpm --filter computer-use-login build:desktop one time.
Set OPENAI_API_KEY in examples/react/computer-use-login/.env.local, then run pnpm --filter computer-use-login dev.
In the login card, type tomsmith and SuperSecretPassword!, then click Sign in.
Make sure that the model reports the Secure Area, and that the password is in no chat message.
How this PR makes testing easy. The new example app is the test path. The unit tests are in packages/ai-computer-sandbox/tests/driver.test.ts and packages/ai-sandbox-cloudflare/tests/handle.test.ts.
Risk / rollback
sandboxIds and snapshots are new options. Without them, sandboxComputer works as before.
A snapshot holds the browser cookies. In production, the blob store must be encrypted. The docs say this.
The subshell wrap changes every Cloudflare command. A command that relied on a shared shell state (cd, variables) from an earlier command now loses it. The other providers already run each command alone.
To undo, revert the PR.

Walkthrough
The changes add per-thread sandbox retention and file snapshots, wrap Cloudflare sandbox commands in subshells, and add a computer-use login tutorial and React example. The login flow uses a separate credential form and an approval-gated tool to submit credentials through a browser script.

After submission, wait_for polls until location.href changes. A sign-in that stays on the same URL never meets that condition, so the script waits the full 30 seconds before it clears the password fields and prints the result. The tool response is delayed by the same amount.

The Docker setup runs on your own machine. To host the app, use a sandbox provider that pauses a sandbox and keeps its memory, like E2B:
```ts
import { e2bSandbox } from '@tanstack/ai-sandbox-e2b'
const provider = e2bSandbox({
template: 'your-desktop-template',
onTimeout: 'pause',
})
```
Build an E2B template from `sandbox/Dockerfile`, and start `desktop.sh` in it. Then move the two stores of `src/harness.ts` to your database: the sandbox id of each thread, and the logins (with a time limit).

Narrow the "model never sees the password" guarantee to password input fields.
The sign-in script clears only input[type=password] values after submit. It does not remove text that the page renders from the typed value. The driver captures the whole X display with no masking. If the sign-in page shows the typed password as visible text, that password can appear in a screenshot. The tool result sends that screenshot to the model, and the harness stores it in the transcript media store. On a failed sign-in, the tool result also asks the model to take a screenshot, which can capture the mirrored value.
Update the statement in examples/react/computer-use-login/README.md (line 27) and docs/tutorials/computer-use-login.md (line 18). Limit the guarantee to password input fields. State that a sign-in page that displays the typed password can expose it in screenshots. Do not state that the model never sees the password.

Normalize LOGIN_SITE before the origin check.
login.py derives the expected origin from the raw URL. An uppercase host or an explicit default port, such as https://EXAMPLE.com:443/login, yields https://EXAMPLE.com:443. Snapshot history in the example's memory store has no retention limit.
Each successful sign-in and each idle save appends a checkpoint. The memory store keeps earlier checkpoints and their blob references. Nothing in the snapshot path removes them, so stored data grows with each save for the life of the server process.
The example does not pass any retention setting, and the snapshot API exposes none. The only removal method, deleteHead, removes the current head. After a save, the current head is the new checkpoint, so the earlier checkpoint cannot be removed with that method.
This comment proposes no code change. Bounding the history requires a removal mechanism that the current snapshot API does not provide.

Make the sandbox ID claim atomic across server instances.
Two server instances can handle the first two requests of one new thread at the same time. Both read no ID, both call provider.create, and each set overwrites the other. The losing sandbox keeps running, but no stored ID points to it. The store contract has no set-if-absent step, and the driver does not destroy the losing sandbox. Add a claim operation that stores only the first ID and destroys the losing sandbox, or document that the store must serialize the first creation per thread.
Scope of the trigger
Two requests in one process do not trigger this. The machine for a thread is memoized in that process, so only separate instances can race.
