On Windows, DevSpace decodes process output as UTF-8 while cmd.exe may still use a legacy OEM console code page. PowerShell inherits that code page, so Cyrillic and other non-ASCII output can arrive as OEM bytes and become mojibake when DevSpace calls Buffer.toString("utf8").

This keeps the existing Windows shell and quoting behavior, but switches the command shell to code page 65001 before starting the user command. The chcp banner is redirected to nul, so successful command output is unchanged apart from now being UTF-8-compatible.

The regression test forces the Windows console to CP866, runs PowerShell through ProcessSessionManager, verifies the Cyrillic output round-trips unchanged, and restores the previous code page afterward. pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint, and the full test suite pass (577 tests, 0 failures).

Fixes #451.

Walkthrough

On Windows, ProcessSessionManager.startPipe now sets the console code page to UTF-8 before running a command. A Windows-only test switches to code page 866 and checks that Russian PowerShell output is decoded correctly.

startPipe prefixes Windows commands with chcp 65001>nul &&. The Windows-only test switches to code page 866, runs PowerShell that prints Russian text, and checks the exit code and output. The test restores the original code page.

The Unicode fix retains two bounded concerns: commands fail with an unusual PowerShell ComSpec configuration, and slower Windows runners may fail the new test. A shell guard and longer test wait address them.

Explanation

Issue #451 requires UTF-8-compatible Windows console output, preservation of the existing shell and quoting behavior, suppression of the chcp banner, and a regression test. src/process-sessions.ts prefixes Windows pipe commands with chcp 65001>nul && and still passes the command to the existing resolved shell. src/process-sessions.test.ts forces CP866, runs PowerShell through ProcessSessionManager, checks the Cyrillic output, and restores the prior code page.

The whole-PR diff changes only Windows process-session command setup and its targeted Windows Unicode regression test. Both changes directly support issue #451. No unrelated implementation or test changes are present.

Raise the yield time for the new PowerShell test.

The Windows test at src/process-sessions.test.ts:84 passes yieldTimeMs: 2_000. ProcessSessionManager.start returns after that time even if the process is still running, and the test then asserts running is false. If PowerShell takes more than two seconds to start and finish on the Windows CI runner, the completion assertion fails. Raising the value to 10_000 does not slow passing runs, because waitForExit returns as soon as the process exits.

Skip the chcp prefix when the Windows shell is not cmd.exe.

When ComSpec names a non-cmd shell, such as Windows PowerShell 5.1, Node passes the whole command string to that shell with -c. The chcp 65001>nul && prefix is included in that string. Windows PowerShell 5.1 does not accept && as a statement separator, so the user command can fail before it runs. Apply the prefix only when the resolved shell is cmd.exe.
