feat(plugins): add Southwest label 37 and 40 decoders - #551
Adds decoders for Southwest's compressed ACARS traffic: label 37 (downlinks) and label 40 (uplinks).
How the text is encoded. Each message carries a two-digit code, 01 to 09, that picks one of nine substitution tables per label. Label 37 starts <code><5-character type>, label 40 starts TYPE,<code>. Label 40 table N is label 37 table N read in reverse.
What it decodes. The text of every type. Fields are also read for the types with a fixed layout: POS01/POS02 position reports, CLB02 climb, ETA03, GAM02 gate request, TDM01 doors, FCM01 engines/APU/fuel, MXR03 maintenance and FHD04 frequency handoff on label 37; ASR01 approach stability and GAR03 gate assignment on label 40.
What it leaves alone. A message with an unread character (shown as ¤), or a field that doesn't fit its type's layout, is shown as text only. PIC01 uplinks (duty-extension requests carrying crew employee numbers) are not decoded.
New files: lib/plugins/Label_37_SWA.ts, lib/plugins/Label_40_SWA.ts, lib/utils/swa_compressed.ts (tables), lib/utils/swa_fields.ts (field readers), with tests. Both plugins are registered in MessageDecoder.ts and official.ts.
How the table code is chosen
This is background for the share anomaly raised on Discord; the decoder doesn't depend on it, because the code is in each message. Codes are weighted 12/60 for 01, 7/60 for each odd code and 5/60 for each even code. POS01/POS02 take their code from a 337.5 s clock (37.5 s per code), which restarts with each new flight number. Other label 37 types and label 40 pick at random with the same weights. That is why 01 is about 20% and odd and even codes alternate.
Tests
22 new tests in Label_37_SWA.test.ts and Label_40_SWA.test.ts.
Southwest compresses its label 37 downlinks and label 40 uplinks with
nine substitution tables per label, picked by a two-digit code. The new
plugins decode the text of every type and read the fields of the laid-out
ones (position, climb, ETA, gate request, door, engine/fuel, maintenance,
frequency handoff, approach stability, gate assignment). A message with
an unread character or a field outside its type's layout is shown as text
only. PIC01 uplinks (duty-extension requests with crew employee numbers)
are not decoded.

The new Southwest decoders have bounded edge cases that can display impossible positions or times, omit available telemetry, or overstate decoding completeness. Merging carries low risk with owner awareness and targeted follow-up.

Explanation
The title "feat(plugins): add Southwest label 37 and 40 decoders" matches the main change. The PR adds Label_37_SWA and Label_40_SWA decoder plugins, plus shared utilities and registration in MessageDecoder. The title is concise, uses a conventional prefix, and names the specific labels. It does not mention the compressed-body substitution tables or the field-layout decoding, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Reject out-of-range ETA values in SwaFieldWriter.eta.
SwaFieldWriter.eta accepts any four digits. A value such as 2460 (hour 24, minute 60) passes the gate. DateTimeUtils.convertHHMMSSToTod returns h * 3600 + m * 60 + s with no range check, so 2460 becomes 90000. ResultFormatter.eta rejects only NaN, so it writes raw.eta_time and pushes a time item. Label_37_SWA sets decodeResult.decoded = true before it parses the fields, so the report is still marked decoded.
The ETA03 and POS01 layouts both place a four-digit field at the ETA index, so a valid-looking report with 2460 reaches this path. Limit the gate to a valid time of day:
🐛 Suggested fix
- if (/^\d{4}$/.test(v)) {+ if (/^(?:[01]\d|2[0-3])[0-5]\d$/.test(v)) {
With this change, an invalid ETA is consumed by take and dropped without a remaining entry. Decide whether that silent drop is acceptable, or route the value to remaining instead.

Update the validation gate in SwaFieldWriter.eta to accept only four-digit times

rejected rather than converted and written.
Minor · Route malformed MXR03 headers to the partial branch. · Label_37_SWA.ts:114-124
Route malformed MXR03 headers to the partial branch.
A clean MXR03 message whose destination, ETA, or maintenance code fails the prefix check gets decodeLevel = 'full'. It should get 'partial'. MXR03 has no entry in SWA_LAYOUTS, so layouts is undefined for this type. The failed prefix skips the prefix branch. The message then reaches if (clean && !layouts), which is written for free text and report types whose fields are not read. MXR03 reads its prefix fields, so that branch does not fit it. The partial branch below already covers "a field that breaks the type's layout."
The displayed text is the same on both paths for MXR03. Only the decodeLevel value changes, so the effect is limited to the decode-level label.
🐛 Suggested fix
- if (clean && !layouts) {+ if (clean && !layouts && !prefix) {
With this change, a clean MXR03 with a failed prefix skips the no-layout branch and reaches the partial text-only result. Types without a prefix layout are unchanged. Valid MXR03 messages are handled by the prefix branch earlier in decode().

Review comment at @lib/plugins/Label_37_SWA.ts around lines 114 - 124:
Update the `clean && !layouts` branch in `decode()` to exclude messages with a
prefix, so a clean `MXR03` whose prefix check fails falls through to the
existing partial-result branch and receives `decodeLevel = 'partial'`; preserve
the current behavior for no-layout messages without a prefix.
Minor · Reject out-of-range latitude and longitude in SWA position fields. · swa_fields.ts:12-13
Reject out-of-range latitude and longitude in SWA position fields.
The LAT and LON layouts in lib/utils/swa_fields.ts check digit counts only. LAT admits N 91.001 (\d{1,2}\.\d{3}), and LON admits W181.001 (\d{1,3}\.\d{3}). A POS01 message with these fields passes the layout check. SwaFieldWriter.position converts them to latitude: 91.001 and longitude: -181.001. ResultFormatter.position rejects only undefined and NaN, so it writes both values to raw.position and adds an aircraft_position item. That item formats as 91.001 N, 181.001 W. Latitude above 90 and longitude above 180 are not valid aircraft positions.
This keeps the existing malformed-field behavior: the early return drops the position without writing it. The other fields in the message are unchanged.
Severity is minor. The trigger needs a corrupted or malformed transmission that still matches the SWA layout. No shared decoder rejects out-of-range coordinates. The formatted output and raw.position would show an impossible position.

Update SwaFieldWriter.position to reject decoded coordinates when the absolute
latitude exceeds 90 or the absolute longitude exceeds 180 before calling
ResultFormatter.position; retain the existing early-return behavior so invalid
positions are dropped without changing other message fields.
Add a rejection test for a recognized POS01 body that fails its layouts.
No test in lib/plugins/Label_37_SWA.test.ts sends a recognized type with a clean body whose fields fail its layout. The rejection test at lines 177-184 sends '01ABCDE', which has no line break. decodeSwaLabel37 returns undefined at lib/utils/swa_compressed.ts:79, so the plugin takes the unknown branch before any layout check. A regression that accepts a 16-field POS01 body would pass every test in the file.
The text-only fallback at lib/plugins/Label_37_SWA.ts:128-131 is already covered by the unread-character test at lines 167-175. The untested trigger is the layout mismatch.
POS01 has two layouts. Layout 1 has 15 fields. Layout 2 has 16 fields, and its last field must be six digits. A 16-field body is not invalid by count alone. In the fixture below, the appended KJ decodes to ,1, so the extra field is 1. That single digit fails the six-digit requirement, and the field count fails layout 1. The body therefore falls back to text only.
The current no-newline fixture stops at the !d check in Label_37_SWA.ts. An unknown-type fixture, with a valid table code and a line break but a type that fails isSwaType, stops at the !isSwaType check. Both return decoded false and decodeLevelnone. Only the second path tests type-name rejection. The current test name describes a body outside the SWA layout, so no rename is needed.
Add this test before the rejection test:
Suggested test
+ test('shows text only when a POS01 body fails both layouts', () => {+ message.text =+ '09BP-HJ\nA,EVKA(D-KO/8LY:I8KXJHHYLH6K86MMMKI:IKN HKY6M6KJ:YNKIHIIKI:MKI6NKH HK9:8KJNIHLHKJ';+ const decodeResult = plugin.decode(message);++ expect(decodeResult.decoded).toBe(true);+ expect(decodeResult.decoder.decodeLevel).toBe('partial');+ expect(decodeResult.raw.position).toBeUndefined();+ expect(decodeResult.raw.altitude).toBeUndefined();+ });+

Add a test using a recognized POS01 body with a valid table code and line break
whose 16 fields fail both layouts because the final field is not six digits.
Verify plugin.decode returns decoded true at partial level and leaves
raw.position and raw.altitude undefined, confirming the body falls back to text
only.
Rename the free-text test and add table 03 and 04 cases.
The test decodes free text in each table decodes only FTX01,07L. The label 40 fixtures reach tables 01, 02, 07, and 08 only. No test decodes tables 03, 04, 05, 06, or 09, so the title claims coverage the body does not provide.
Suggested test change
- test('decodes free text in each table', () => {+ test('decodes free text in table 07', () => {
// FTX01 table 07: raw L is Q.
message.text = 'FTX01,07L';
const decodeResult = plugin.decode(message);

expect(decodeResult.decoder.decodeLevel).toBe('full');

These assertions check only the entry for raw L. An error in another position of table 03 or 04 does not change them. The tests protect the exercised mapping, not table correctness. The expected values reflect the current SWA_LABEL_40_TABLES strings. They do not confirm those strings against the source protocol. Tables 05, 06, and 09 remain untested.

From the CodeRabbit review of airframesio#551:
- POS01/HGD03/FHD04: a wind direction or speed sent without the other
is written on its own instead of being dropped.
- Positions: a coordinate is written only when both are present and in
range (latitude 90, longitude 180); otherwise placeholders are
consumed and a sent coordinate goes to remaining.
- ETA: only 0000-2359 is written; a four-digit value out of range goes
to remaining. MXR03 now reports its unused header fields too.
- MXR03 whose header fails its layout is shown as text, partial.
Tests: one per case above, a known type that breaks its layout, and
the FTX01 opening in all nine label 40 tables (the raw forms seen at
the start of every FTX01 in a month of airframes traffic).
On 225,900 distinct SWA label 37/40 messages from one week, one message
decodes differently: a POS01 with a longitude and no latitude now keeps
the longitude in remaining.
