Adds env.bosh.systemd_resolved.cache (yes | no | no-negative) to the agent settings. The agent writes Cache= into /etc/systemd/resolved.conf.d/10-bosh.conf at boot, defaulting to yes. On stemcells without systemd-resolved the setting is a no-op.

instance_groups:

  env:
    bosh:
      systemd_resolved:
        cache: no-negative

Follows the same pattern as env.bosh.ipv6: a dedicated SetupSystemdResolved method at each layer (Platform → Manager → DNSResolver), called from bootstrap.go before SetupNetworking.

Companion stemcell change (removes the now-redundant hardcoded Cache=yes drop-in): cloudfoundry/bosh-linux-stemcell-builder#781

Walkthrough

The BOSH environment now accepts systemd-resolved cache settings. Bootstrap passes these settings to platform setup before networking and returns a wrapped error if setup fails. The Linux network path forwards the settings to the DNS resolver. The systemd resolver validates cache modes and writes a cache line, with a DNS line when DNS servers are provided. Tests cover settings decoding and resolver configuration.

Priority: Low

Merge Risk: Low · up to be355

Operators can now choose the systemd-resolved cache mode. However, hosts with no DNS servers now also restart systemd-resolved at boot, and a failed restart stops bootstrap. On stemcells that predate the companion stemcell change, a non-default cache mode is silently overridden by the stemcell's own setting. The change is mergeable with awareness of these limits.

Explanation

The title "Add operator-configurable systemd-resolved cache mode" names the main change: a new operator-facing setting, env.bosh.systemd_resolved.cache, that the agent writes as Cache= in the systemd-resolved drop-in. The raw summary confirms this setting, the SystemdResolvedSettings type, and the generated configuration. The title is specific and concise, and it does not describe anything absent from the changeset.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template's intent. It explains what the change does: a new env.bosh.systemd_resolved.cache setting (yes, no, no-negative), a default of yes, and a no-op on stemcells without systemd-resolved. It gives a YAML usage example, describes the Platform, Manager, and DNSResolver layering with the call from bootstrap.go, and links a companion stemcell PR. Several template sections are missing: 'Please provide contextual information' has only a companion link and no tracking story or discussion, 'What tests have you run against this PR?' is absent, 'How should this change be described in bosh-agent release notes?' is absent, 'Does this PR introduce a breaking change?' is absent, and 'Tag your pair, your PM, and/or team!' is absent. The AI Review Feedback section is also absent.

Resolution

Add these template sections or fill them in: (1) tests run against this PR; (2) a brief release-notes entry written for operators; (3) a statement on whether the change is breaking, including upgrade behavior when the stemcell still writes the hardcoded Cache=yes drop-in; (4) teammates to tag for follow-up; (5) contextual links such as a story or discussion, beyond the companion stemcell PR; (6) an AI Review Feedback confirmation that review comments are resolved. The 'What is this change about?' section can keep its current content, but should be labeled with the template heading.

On stemcells without systemd-resolved the setting is a no-op.

Restart systemd-resolved only when the resolver config changes, and handle restart errors on the empty-DNS path.

On systemd hosts, SetupDNS now runs systemctl restart systemd-resolved even when no DNS servers are configured. At the base, the empty-DNS case returned before any restart. If that restart fails, bootstrap fails at SetupNetworking. This path has no recovery. The failure needs a systemd-resolved host where the restart fails, so it is rare, and the intended cache-mode change is deliberate.

Possible approach

Run the restart only when the rendered 10-bosh.conf content differs from the existing file. Alternatively, add a test that asserts the restart command for the empty-DNS case and decide explicitly whether its failure should abort bootstrap.

Assert the restart in the empty-DNS test.

SetupDNS restarts systemd-resolved on the empty-DNS path, but the test for that path does not check the restart. A regression that skips the restart would still pass. Add the same RunCommands assertion that the configured-DNS test uses.

should not be relied on for those stemcells until their drop-in is fixed.
