WalkthroughThe pull request adds Git-based changed-line detection and applies it to clang-tidy diagnostics and fixes by default. It expands compilation-database discovery and changes missing-database handling. Tests, examples, and documentation cover these behaviors. ChangesClang-tidy execution

…ation database - Report only diagnostics on the lines a commit adds or changes, using clang-tidy's --line-filter (so --fix is limited too). The lines come from the staged changes, or from PRE_COMMIT_FROM_REF...PRE_COMMIT_TO_REF for pre-push and run --from-ref/--to-ref. Every line is checked when a file has no changes (run --all-files) or outside git; --all-lines turns the filter off. - Without a compilation database, skip clang-tidy locally with a notice and fail when CI is set. clang-tidy's own compile_commands.json and compile_flags.txt lookup next to the files, -p and --extra-arg count as a database. - Also look in builddir/, cmake-build-*/, build-*/, build/*/ and out/build/*/ for compile_commands.json. - Treat all file types pre-commit tags as c/c++ (.mm, .ino, module units) as source files.
- clang-tidy uses the first --line-filter name that ends the reported path, so list longer names first: "a.cpp" no longer takes the lines of "data.cpp" and hides its new warnings. - Give each parallel run only its own file's filter, and split a serial run into several commands when the filter would make the command line too long (Windows: 32,767 characters, Linux: 128 KiB per argument). - Report any OSError from starting clang-tidy as a failed hook instead of a traceback.
The staged (or pushed) line numbers only fit the file clang-tidy reads when the two match. pre-commit hides unstaged changes during a commit, but a direct run, --files, or a push with uncommitted changes can differ: then check every line instead of filtering with lines that do not fit.

only outside patch hunks, tracking patch structure so an added `++ i;` line
cannot reset the current file. Add a test where that line is followed by a
second hunk and verify both hunks’ ranges are retained.

An added line "++ i;" shows as "+++ i;" in the diff, which the parser took for the next file's header, so later hunks of the file were lost. Skip each hunk's lines by their counts. Also say in the docs that --fix applies the fixes of the reported problems, which can touch a nearby unchanged line.
Keeps _parse_added_lines simple (SonarCloud cognitive complexity) and covers a diff that ends inside a hunk.

Two changes that make the clang-tidy hook usable on a local commit. In a sample of public
.pre-commit-config.yamlfiles that mention clang-tidy, 31% have it commented out or excluded, and the reasons in the comments are mostly "needs a compile DB", "slow" and old warnings. On fmt, a 2-line change got 826 warnings, 2 of them on the changed lines.1. Report only the changed lines
By default the hook now reports only diagnostics on lines that the commit adds or changes:
git commitandpre-commit run: the staged changes (git diff --cached).pre-commit run --from-ref A --to-ref Band thepre-pushstage:A...B, fromPRE_COMMIT_FROM_REF/PRE_COMMIT_TO_REF(pre-commit and prek both set them). The lines go to clang-tidy's own
--line-filter, like LLVM'sclang-tidy-diff.py, so--fixalso changes only those lines. Compiler errors are still reported. Files without added lines (pure rename, deletions only) are not checked, and if no file has added lines clang-tidy does not run.Every line is checked when a file the hook gets has no changes (
pre-commit run --all-fileson a clean tree,--files), when git fails, or outside a repository.--all-lines, or a--line-filterinargs, turns the filter off.On Windows the filter lists each name with both
/and\, because clang-tidy matches the name against the end of the path it reports.2. No compilation database
Without a compilation database clang-tidy reports missing headers instead of problems in the code, and today that fails the commit. Now:
--no-compile-commands) goes to stderr, which pre-commit shows with-vorverbose: true.CIis set (notfalse/0/no), the hook fails with the same message, so a broken CI setup is not silent.A database counts as found when the hook detects one (it then passes
-pas before), when clang-tidy would findcompile_commands.jsonorcompile_flags.txtnext to a file or in its parents, or whenargscontain-p,--extra-argor--extra-arg-before.--no-compile-commandskeeps running clang-tidy without a database. The search now also covers
builddir/(Meson's default), thencmake-build-*/,build-*/,build/*/andout/build/*/(CMake presets, Visual Studio); within a pattern the newestcompile_commands.jsonwins. Real configs use names likeout/build/dev,build/firmware-debugandbuild-tensorrt.The checks run before the tool is installed, so a skipped run does not touch PyPI.
Also
.mm,.ino,.cppm,.ccm,.cxxmand.c++mare now source files. pre-commit tags themc++, and without this they would be dropped by the line filter.clang-analyzer-*is on by default unlessChecksstart with-*, and on fmt it took more than 90% of clang-tidy's time (LLVM 22 removed it from the defaults). Checking only changed lines does not make clang-tidy faster, since it still analyzes the whole file.--compile-commands=builddir; the GitHub Actions example generates the database beforepre-commit/action.Behavior changes
--all-linesfor the old behavior.--no-compile-commands.pre-commit run --all-filesbatch has staged changes, only the changed lines are reported, since the hook cannot tell this apart from a commit.Tests
uv run pytest: 345 passed (278 before), coverage 100%. Newtests/test_changed_lines.pyruns real git repos: staged and unstaged changes, new file, deletions, rename, first commit, subdirectory, quoted file names, from/to refs, outside git.tests/conftest.pyturns the git and database checks off by default so the other tests keep their behavior.--all-linesreports all three,--fixfixes only the changed line.bash testing/run.sh: 5 passed, also withCI=true.readability-braces-around-statements, two old warnings, one new):git commitwith pre-commit,pre-commit run, prek runand--from-ref HEAD~1 --to-ref HEADunder both report only the new line;--all-fileson a clean tree reports all three. Withoutcompile_flags.txt:pre-commit run -vpasses with the notice,CI=true pre-commit runfails with the message.Summary by CodeRabbit
clang-tidynow reports diagnostics on added or changed lines by default, while still analyzing the whole file and reporting compiler errors. Files without added lines are skipped; use--all-linesor a line-filter option to check all lines.
