Problem

pre-commit keeps one hook environment per (repo, rev, additional_dependencies) and shares it between all projects on a machine. Every --version was pip-installed into that one environment, replacing the wheel that was there. With v1.8.0:

  • Two projects pinned to different versions reinstall on every switch, and each switch needs pypi.org: --version=18 → 21 → 18 reinstalled every time.
  • A project without --version runs whatever version another project left behind: after a --version=18 run elsewhere, an unpinned run printed Using installed clang-format Python wheel version 18.1.8.

Change

  • A --version is installed with pip install --target into <env>/cpp-linter-hooks/<tool>-<version>/, and the hook runs the binary the wheel ships (<package>/data/bin, or <package>/bin in old clang-format wheels; the wheel's console script cannot run from a --target directory).
  • Lookup order with --version: the environment's wheel (additional_dependencies) if it matches, then the newest finished per-version install that matches (exact or prefix, RECORD present), then PyPI + install under the existing lock.
  • Without --version, nothing changes: the environment's wheel is used, otherwise the latest wheel is installed into the environment. Per-version installs are never used, so other projects' pins do not leak in.
  • A directory left by an interrupted install is removed before installing again.
  • README (Custom clang tool version) and AGENTS.md updated.

Verification

  • Real wheels, fresh venv: --version=18 0.57 s (install), 18 0.08 s, 21 0.56 s (install), 18 0.06 s, 21.1.8 0.06 s, no version → installs 23.1.3 into the environment; clang-format-18.1.8/ and clang-format-21.1.8/ coexist. clang-tidy 21.1.6 from its directory runs and finds its resource headers.
  • Checked that old (6.0.1, 10.0.1.1) and new clang-format wheels and clang-tidy wheels all ship the binary in one of the two directories.
  • 382 tests pass, coverage 100%; new tests cover coexistence without PyPI, unpinned runs ignoring per-version installs, unfinished installs, and the pip --target command.

Disk: every version a project asks for stays in the hook environment until pre-commit removes the environment (pre-commit gc / clean).

Default versions decided by rev and clang-format as a real dependency will follow in a separate PR (breaking, 2.0.0).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Explicitly requested tool versions are installed in separate locations and reused on later runs.
    • A matching wheel already available in the hook environment can satisfy a version request.
  • Behavior Changes
    • Runs without an explicit version no longer reuse per-version installs or arbitrary existing wheels; they resolve the tool from PyPI.
    • First-time lookups may require network access, and parallel file groups wait for an ongoing installation to finish.

pre-commit shares one hook environment between all projects on a machine
that use the same rev. Every run with a different --version replaced the
wheel in it, so two projects pinned to different versions reinstalled
(and contacted PyPI) on each switch, and a project without --version ran
whatever version another project had left behind.

A --version is now installed with `pip install --target` into
<env>/cpp-linter-hooks/<tool>-<version>/ and the hook runs the binary the
wheel ships. Versions coexist, each is downloaded once, and later runs use
it without network access. Runs without --version keep using the wheel in
the environment and never pick a per-version install.

Same S8705 finding as on #303, which was triaged as a false positive. The command is a list run without a shell, and the only user input in it is --version from the hook's .pre-commit-config.yaml. That input reaches pip only as the single argument clang-format==<version>, where <version> is the matching version from PyPI's release list. The new --target path is built from the same version under the hook environment. No input from an LLM is involved, and the input can't add a pip option. The finding needs a maintainer to mark it as a false positive in SonarCloud.

Walkthrough

Explicit version requests can reuse matching installed wheels or completed per-version installs. When no suitable tool is installed, the resolver installs the requested version into its own directory. Unversioned requests do not use per-version installs.

Changes

Tool resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Installed tool lookup
cpp_linter_hooks/util.py, tests/test_util.py, AGENTS.md
The resolver checks the hook-environment wheel first. For explicit version requests, it can also find the newest matching completed per-version install. Tests cover executable lookup, version selection, incomplete installs, lookup precedence, and reuse without PyPI access.
Versioned install and resolution
cpp_linter_hooks/util.py, tests/test_util.py, README.md, AGENTS.md
Explicit version requests install into separate directories, with stale target contents removed before installation. Tests cover versioned and unversioned install behavior. The documentation describes lookup order, wheel reuse, and installation behavior.
