Why

This repo had no CI. Renovate keeps opening major-version PRs (#2–#10, #12, #13) that nothing checks.

The app is an ejected Create React App 2 (webpack 4, Babel 6/7, Jest 23, node-sass 4, no lockfile), and it doesn't install or build on current Node. This PR first revived it inside a node:14-bullseye image. Following the decision to migrate legacy apps to Vite, it now builds with Vite and tests with Vitest on the latest Current Node, from a committed lockfile (see Vite migration below). The built site is crawled in a current Chromium.

What changed

  • .github/workflows/runtime.yml (new). Calls the shared runtime-gate.yml in static mode. The settings are:

    • no build-image. Node comes from .nvmrc (node, the latest Current release).
    • install is npm ci, from the lockfile.
    • build: npm run build. The old CI=false workaround for CRA's warnings-as-errors is gone.
    • static-dir: dist.
    • spa: true, because the generated service worker answers every navigation with index.html.

It runs on PRs, on pushes to master, weekly on Thursday at 05:43 UTC, and on manual dispatch.

  • .github/workflows/ci.yml (new). Runs npm test (vitest run) through the shared node-ci.yml@v1, on Node from .nvmrc. It doesn't run lint or typecheck, because there are no such scripts. It doesn't run the build either, because the runtime gate does that.

  • .github/runtime-gate.md (new). Hints for the AI explorer.

  • .github/workflows/security.yml (new). Runs osv-scanner and gitleaks (full history), plus an advisory npm audit, through the shared security.yml@v1. There is now a lockfile, so osv-scanner scans it normally. The earlier --allow-no-lockfiles override is removed, and the audit reads Node from .nvmrc.

  • .github/workflows/workflows-lint.yml (new). Runs actionlint.

  • renovate.json. The base changes from config:recommended to github>rishitank/.github:node. There were no custom rules to keep.

Vite migration

What changed and why, from → to:

Before After
Build ejected CRA 2: webpack 4, scripts/*.js, config/*.js Vite 8.3.4 + @vitejs/plugin-react 6.1.2
Tests Jest 23 + babel-jest (scripts/test.js) Vitest 5.0.3 + @testing-library/react 12.1.5 + jsdom 30
Sass node-sass 4 + sass-loader 7 Dart Sass 1.105 (modern API)
Service worker sw-precache-webpack-plugin vite-plugin-pwa 2.0 (generateSW)
PostCSS autoprefixer 9 + flexbugs-fixes 4, in webpack autoprefixer 10.6 + flexbugs-fixes 5, in postcss.config.js, same browser list
React 16.7 (^16.7.0) 16.14 (^16.14.0, needed for the automatic JSX runtime)
Node node:14 container latest Current (.nvmrc = node)
Output build/ dist/
Lockfile none package-lock.json (npm 11, 437 packages, npm audit: 0 vulnerabilities)

Entry point and file names

  • index.html moves from public/ to the root and loads /src/index.jsx as a module.
  • %PUBLIC_URL%/x becomes /x; Vite prefixes it if a base is ever set.
  • favicon.ico and manifest.json stay in public/ and are copied to dist/ as before.
  • index.js, App.js and App.test.js contain JSX, so they are renamed to .jsx. App's content is unchanged, including its "edit src/App.js" starter text.

jQuery and Bootstrap. webpack's ProvidePlugin used to supply the global jQuery that Bootstrap 3's JavaScript expects. A two-line src/jquery-global.js, imported before bootstrap, now does the same. I checked in the browser that jQuery.fn.modal is defined.

Service worker

  • src/registerServiceWorker.js reads import.meta.env.PROD and import.meta.env.BASE_URL instead of process.env.NODE_ENV and process.env.PUBLIC_URL.
  • vite-plugin-pwa still emits /service-worker.js. It precaches the build and falls back to index.html for navigations, keeping the /__ exclusion. It injects no registration code and leaves manifest.json untouched.

Sass

  • index.scss keeps its ~package paths through a ~ alias in vite.config.js. The alias covers the imports and the font url()s. The Glyphicons and Font Awesome fonts land in dist/assets.
  • It uses @use … with (…) instead of the deprecated @import. The compiled CSS is byte-identical to the @import version.
  • quietDeps hides Bootstrap 3 and Font Awesome 4's own deprecation warnings.
  • The bootstrap-sass pin goes from exactly 3.4.1 to ^3.4.3. That pin was only there because libsass can't compile 3.4.3's sass:math, and Dart Sass can.

Dropped

  • The CRA polyfills: promise, whatwg-fetch and object-assign. Vite targets modern browsers.
  • npm-check.
  • ESLint. CRA's react-app config only ran as non-blocking warnings inside the build, which ran with CI=false. Its packages (eslint 5, eslint-config-react-app 3, babel-eslint) can't install together under npm 7+ peer rules, and nothing in the repo is linted any more. Say if you want a flat-config ESLint 9 added.

Removed as replaced

  • config/ (env, paths, polyfills, jest transforms, the webpack and dev-server configs), scripts/ (build, start, test) and public/index.html.
  • src/index.js, src/App.js and src/App.test.js.
  • Every webpack, Babel, Jest, loader and CRA-utility package.
  • .gitignore adds /dist.

Tests. The Jest smoke test is ported rather than deleted. It now renders <App /> with Testing Library and asserts "Welcome to React". npm test is vitest run, which doesn't watch.

Lockfile. A one-shot deps-refresh-once workflow wrote package-lock.json on a runner, so it wasn't transcribed by hand. The workflow is deleted in the next commit. The lockfile is byte-identical to the one generated and verified locally.

Verified locally on Node 26.11

  • npm ci, npm test (1 passed) and npm run build (no warnings) all pass.
  • vite preview serves /, /service-worker.js, /manifest.json and /favicon.ico with 200 responses.
  • In headless Chromium, the header, logo and intro render, and Bootstrap's jQuery plugins are attached. After a reload the service worker controls the page. There are no console errors and no failed requests.
  • vite dev mode is clean too.

Notes

Fixes in this PR

  • Earlier (1cf5258). Production CSS via mini-css-extract-plugin, Jest's babel-core bridge and the bootstrap-sass 3.4.1 pin, for the node:14 revival. The Vite migration replaces all three.
  • Vite migration (53753be, 3e4d0b9, bd370f3). See above.

Runtime gate v4 (d1ac5bd)

  • New pin. runtime.yml now calls runtime-gate.yml@f1ad74760767f0f1c488d526fb28d0617917a626, replacing 8e8a197 above. It is still on the unmerged feat: runtime-gate — boot web apps and use them in a real browser before merging .github#6; that is intended and the SHA resolves fine.
  • Flows job. A new flows job runs after runtime on the weekly schedule and manual dispatch only. It saves the paths the AI explorer completed to .github/runtime-gate-flows.json through one reviewed PR (branch runtime-gate/flows) and starts runtime.yml and ci.yml on it (both have workflow_dispatch). The crawl then replays merged flows on every PR. The job gets contents, pull-requests and actions write; the workflow default stays read-only.
  • Sign-in: none. The app is the static CRA starter page with no accounts or login page, so login-path stays unset; a comment in the workflow says so.
  • Result on d1ac5bd: runtime ✅ (run), ci ✅, security ✅, workflows-lint ✅. Coverage: 1/1 routes · 0/0 controls operated · 0/0 forms submitted · 29.3% of the app's own JavaScript executed.

The concern is refuted. .github/workflows/ci.yml already declares workflow_dispatch, so the listed workflow can be dispatched. No change is required, Apprentice.

The Vite migration and the new workflows look mergeable. Several workflows call shared reusable workflows through movable v1 tags. Pinning them to reviewed commit SHAs would stop their code from changing without a change in this repository. This is a bounded hardening follow-up.

… Babel 7 for Jest

Three pre-existing problems that CI surfaced, fixed minimally:

- Build: extract-text-webpack-plugin@3 predates webpack 4 and crashes in
seal ("Chunk.entrypoints: Use Chunks.groupsIterable ..."). The prod config
now uses mini-css-extract-plugin@^0.12 (the webpack-4 replacement): its
loader replaces ExtractTextPlugin.extract(), same filename and relative
publicPath handling. css-loader 2 also rejects the removed `minimize`
option ("CSS Loader Invalid Options"), so it is dropped; CSS is no longer
  minified, everything else is unchanged.
- Build: with no lockfile, bootstrap-sass ^3.4.0 now resolves to 3.4.3,
  which uses `@use "sass:math"` / math.div. node-sass 4 (libsass) cannot
parse that, so bootstrap-sass is pinned to 3.4.1, the last release that
  compiles with node-sass.
- Jest: babel-jest 23 loads `babel-core`, which was Babel 6 and cannot run
  babel-preset-react-app 7 ("Unknown option ... overrides"). Swapped
  babel-core for 7.0.0-bridge.0 and added @babel/core ^7.2.2, the standard
  Jest 23 + Babel 7 setup.

Verified locally on a reconstruction of the branch: npm test passes (1/1)
and npm run build compiles (with dart-sass standing in for node-sass,
which cannot build on the sandbox's Node 22). No lockfile exists, so none
changes.

The app could only be installed, built and tested inside a node:14
container (webpack 4, Babel 6/7, Jest 23, node-sass 4, no lockfile). Move
it to Vite with @vitejs/plugin-react and Dart Sass, and the Jest suite to
Vitest, so it runs on the latest Current Node like the rest of the estate.

- index.html moves from public/ to the root (%PUBLIC_URL% becomes /) and
loads /src/index.jsx as a module. Files containing JSX are renamed to
.jsx (index, App, App.test); public/ still holds favicon and manifest.
- Bootstrap 3's JavaScript gets its global jQuery from src/jquery-global.js
  instead of webpack's ProvidePlugin.
- registerServiceWorker.js reads import.meta.env.PROD/BASE_URL instead of
  process.env.NODE_ENV/PUBLIC_URL; vite-plugin-pwa (generateSW) replaces
sw-precache-webpack-plugin and still emits /service-worker.js with an
  index.html navigation fallback.
- index.scss keeps its ~package paths (aliased in vite.config.js) and uses
@use ... with (...) instead of the deprecated @import; the compiled CSS
is byte-identical to the @import version. bootstrap-sass is unpinned from
3.4.1 to ^3.4.3: the pin only existed because libsass could not compile
3.4.3's sass:math, and Dart Sass can.
- postcss.config.js keeps autoprefixer + flexbugs-fixes with the CRA
  browser list.
- App.test.jsx: Vitest + @testing-library/react 12 (React 16) + jsdom;
  `npm test` is `vitest run`.
- React floor raised to ^16.14.0 (automatic JSX runtime). The CRA polyfills
(promise, whatwg-fetch, object-assign) are dropped; Vite targets modern
  browsers.
- ci.yml uses the shared node-ci workflow on .nvmrc (`node`); runtime.yml
drops build-image and serves dist/; security.yml drops the
--allow-no-lockfiles override now that there is a lockfile.
- One-shot deps-refresh-once.yml generates package-lock.json on a runner
  and removes config/, scripts/, public/index.html, src/index.js,
src/App.js and src/App.test.js; it is deleted in the next commit.

…A/webpack files

Ran on a runner by the one-shot deps-refresh-once workflow: rm -f package-lock.json public/index.html src/index.js src/App.js src/App.test.js && rm -rf config scripts && npm install --package-lock-only --ignore-scripts
It generated package-lock.json on a runner (npm install
--package-lock-only on the latest Current Node; byte-identical to the
lockfile generated and verified locally with npm 11) and removed the
replaced CRA/webpack files. This commit runs CI on the result.

…flows, coverage)

Repin runtime-gate.yml to f1ad747 and add the flows job, which saves
explorer-recorded flows through a reviewed PR on scheduled and manual
runs and starts runtime.yml and ci.yml on that PR. No sign-in: the app
has no accounts.

Follow-up to #11, addressing its two open CodeRabbit threads: ci.yml
(node-ci), security.yml and workflows-lint.yml called
rishitank/.github at the mutable `@v1` tag. Pin all three to
5c644123ed93759cf78aa32d9d119150910e113e, the commit v1 resolves to,
with a `# v1` comment. The house Renovate preset
(helpers:pinGitHubActionDigests) keeps the digest current, so tag moves
still arrive, as reviewed PRs.
