Why

Renovate PRs can pass build, lint and unit tests and still break the running app (hydration mismatches, 404ing chunks, components that throw on click, blank pages). Nothing checked that. This adds a reusable gate that boots the app and uses it in a real browser, with no test cases to maintain. Same toolkit as TanksterAI/.github.

What

  • .github/actions/runtime-gate/ — toolkit (composite action): deterministic crawler (blocking), Gemini free-tier explorer (advisory), static file server, self-tests with healthy/broken fixture sites.
  • .github/workflows/runtime-gate.yml — reusable workflow: docker (production Dockerfile), command or static mode; optional Postgres + migrate; legacy build-image for old toolchains; visual diff against the base branch's last run; sticky PR comment; artifact with screenshots and the app log. Pins the toolkit by commit (93322a6).
  • .github/workflows/runtime-gate-selftest.yml — proves the crawler passes a healthy site and catches every kind of breakage, and runs the reusable workflow end to end.
  • default.json — platformAutomerge: false: private repos on the free plan cannot require status checks, so GitHub's native auto-merge would merge immediately; Renovate now verifies every check (this gate included) itself.
  • docs/runtime-gate.md, README row and section.

Verified locally before pushing

  • Crawler passes the healthy fixture and fails the broken one on: uncaught exception, error thrown by a clicked control, console error, 404 same-origin resource, blank render, framework crash screen.
  • Against a real Next.js 16.4 / React 19.3 production build, a hydration mismatch surfaces as Minified React error #418 via pageerror and fails the crawl.
  • Visual diff: identical runs produce no diffs; a changed heading is reported with a diff image.
  • Explorer: REST request shape and 429 retry tested against a mocked Gemini API; fake-model run and no-key skip path tested. A live Gemini run needs the GEMINI_API_KEY secret.
  • actionlint clean.

Fixes in this PR

  • lighthouserc.example.json: 5 runs, asserted on the median (6a0a682, a81f835). Only this file changed; nothing under .github/actions/runtime-gate or the runtime-gate workflows.
    • collect.numberOfRuns 3 → 5, and assert.aggregationMethod: "median". LHCI's default (optimistic) judged every budget on the best run, so on a noisy hosted runner a single lucky run decided the result.
    • Why median, not median-run: in @lhci/cli 0.14 (unchanged on main) categories:* assertions are scored across every run, and getValueForAggregationMethod has no median-run branch, so it falls through to Math.max, the same as optimistic. Seen in rishitank-portfolio's run (0.88 asserted from 0.64/0.86/0.84/0.88/0.86) and reproduced against @lhci/utils 0.14.0; median gives 0.86.
    • Levels and thresholds unchanged (all warn). lighthouse-ci.yml runs plain lhci autorun, so no CLI flag overrides the file.
  • CI on a81f835: self-check and runtime-gate-selftest green.
  • docs/runtime-gate.md Safety section (4e89080, from the pre-merge self-review): it said the app and its dependencies never see the Gemini key. The key is only passed to the explorer step, but in command and static modes the app (and anything its install left running) is still running as the same user on the same runner during that step, so it can read the explorer process's environment; only docker mode isolates it. The doc now says so and advises a key good for nothing but the Gemini API. Docs only; no code change.

Boots a web app (Dockerfile, command or static), crawls it in a real browser and fails on runtime errors; advisory visual diff and Gemini explorer. Renovate presets set platformAutomerge false so Renovate verifies every check before merging (private repos on a free plan cannot require checks).

    • Added a static server option with single-page app routing support, plus recording and replay of browser flows.
    • Added a workflow to collect recorded flows and propose updates for review.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup guidance and usage examples for the runtime checks.
  • Chores
    • Disabled automatic platform merges by default.
    • Updated Lighthouse CI example settings to use five runs and median aggregation.

Walkthrough

Apprentice, this change adds a reusable runtime-gate workflow and composite action. It starts web apps, runs browser crawls, and can run advisory AI exploration. It adds replayable flows, reports, tests and documentation. It also sets platformAutomerge to false and updates the Lighthouse CI example.

Review comments at @.github/actions/runtime-gate/action.yml:
- Around line 174-176: Update the command invocation following the `wrap` setup
so an empty array is safe with `set -u` on older Bash versions, while still
prepending `xvfb-run` when `RG_HEADED` is true. Use a Bash-compatible
conditional expansion for `wrap`.

Review comments at @.github/actions/runtime-gate/src/crawl.mjs:
- Line 389: Update the entry-point checks in crawl.mjs at lines 389-389 and
explore.mjs at lines 341-341 to compare import.meta.url with
pathToFileURL(process.argv[1]).href, importing pathToFileURL from node:url in
both files, so encoded paths still invoke main().

Review comments at @.github/actions/runtime-gate/src/static-server.mjs:
- Around line 33-35: Update the request-path handling around decodeURIComponent
and the target containment check: catch malformed percent-encoding and return
null, then use path.relative to reject targets outside root, including sibling
paths that share its prefix. Preserve serving behavior for paths contained
within root.

Review comments at @.github/actions/runtime-gate/test/toolkit.test.mjs:
- Around line 70-74: Update the ignore-list test around `run` to assert the
crawler completes successfully and that the report still contains the expected
`menu exploded` finding with `RG_INTERACT` enabled, while continuing to verify
that `Failed prop type` is ignored.
- Around line 16-19: Update the serve helper and its callers to avoid relying on
fixed ports: bind the static server to port 0, obtain its assigned port, and use
that port in the test requests. Alternatively, make the helper fail immediately
if the spawned server exits before becoming ready, so tests cannot connect to a
foreign server.

Review comments at @.github/workflows/runtime-gate-selftest.yml:
- Line 38: Pin the actions used in this workflow to full commit SHAs, including
actions/checkout and actions/setup-node, and retain each action’s version as a
trailing comment.
- Line 43: Set the self-test workflow’s node-version to a fixed supported major
version, such as 22 or 24, instead of current so runs use a stable runtime.
- Around line 48-63: Remove the unused pull-requests write permission from the
reusable workflow invocation; comment is false, so retain only the contents and
actions permissions.

Review comments at @.github/workflows/runtime-gate.yml:
- Line 226: Reduce the runtime job’s permissions to contents: read and actions:
read, and move its sticky-comment step into a separate job that needs runtime,
runs only under the existing comment and pull-request conditions, downloads only
the runtime report artifact, and holds pull-requests: write. Locate the runtime
job and comment step in the workflow; ensure the privileged job does not execute
dependency code or run the app.
- Line 233: Pin each of the ten third-party action references in the workflow,
including actions/checkout, to its verified full commit SHA and retain the
corresponding version tag in a trailing comment for Renovate.

Review comments at @docs/runtime-gate.md:
- Around line 151-152: Update the UK users data-terms sentence in the
runtime-gate documentation to name the applicable Google terms, link to Google’s
authoritative source, and tell users to check the current terms; avoid
presenting the training-use claim as an unverifiable blanket guarantee.
- Around line 49-50: Revise the runtime-errors sentence in the runtime-gate
documentation to use “occur while it explores,” preserving the meaning that
those errors are recorded deterministically.

Review comments at @README.md:
- Around line 92-96: Update the README explanation of GitHub native auto-merge
to avoid the unsupported, changeable claim that private repositories on a free
plan cannot require checks. Soften the wording or link to current GitHub
documentation while preserving the distinction between required checks and
Renovate’s status-check behavior.

561-561: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 💤 Low value

Apprentice, the hints-file path ignores its own default when working-directory is ..

The action resolves RG_EXPLORE_HINTS relative to the job's working directory, and that directory is the repository root. With the default input the path becomes ./.github/runtime-gate.md, which still works. With a subdirectory app, the path becomes <app>/.github/runtime-gate.md. The documented default in action.yml is the repository-level .github/runtime-gate.md. A monorepo that keeps hints at the root loses them, and the explorer gives no warning. Decide on one location and document it. One option is to fall back to the root file when the subdirectory file is missing.

476-480: Apprentice, the baseline lookup uses the caller's workflow file, but the baseline artefact comes from a different event.

The baseline is uploaded only when github.event_name != 'pull_request'. The lookup filters runs by branch: BASE_REF and status: 'success'. A push run on the base branch sets the run's head_branch to the base branch, so the lookup can find it. There is one fault in the filter. listWorkflowRuns with status: 'success' requires the whole caller run to succeed. If any other job in the caller workflow fails on the base branch, that run's valid baseline is skipped. This only weakens the visual diff, which is advisory, and the step is continue-on-error. The effect is acceptable.

377-380: Apprentice, the build-image path lets the build reach the runner network, and the main workspace is mounted read-write.

This behaviour is intended for legacy builds. The inputs come from the calling repository, so the caller already trusts them. No escalation exists here.

535-538: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 💤 Low value

Apprentice, the focus list strips the base URL with string replacement, which breaks for absolute URLs on other hosts and for undefined pages.

If f.page is missing, String(undefined) produces the literal path "undefined", and the explorer receives a bogus focus page. Use new URL(f.page, r.url).pathname and skip findings that have no page. The explorer is advisory, so the impact is low.

The crawl now presses plain buttons, role=button, menu items, switches, checkboxes, radios and selects, and searches search boxes, up to interact-max (12) per page. It never presses submit buttons or anything labelled destructive (delete, pay, sign out, send...). Self-tests prove a throwing plain button and a throwing search are caught and a 'Delete account' button is never pressed.

The crawl fills up to 3 forms per page (type-aware dummy values: email, password, tel, url, number, dates, postcode, name; textareas; selects; required checkboxes) and submits them, skipping forms whose button says send/pay/delete/order/publish/sign out and similar. A 4xx answering a dummy submission (validation, wrong password) is reported as a warning; exceptions, console errors and 5xx still fail. Self-tests: a dummy sign-in's 404 is a warning, a 'Send message' form is never submitted, and a search form whose submission crashes the page (disabled submit enabled by typing) is caught.

.github/actions/runtime-gate/src/crawl.mjs (1)

173-176: Apprentice, role="button" elements and <input type="button"> controls inside forms skip the submit guard.

The guard covers only BUTTON elements and input[type=submit]. An input[type="image"] element also submits a form, but the selector does not match it, so it is never reached. Only the DESTRUCTIVE label check protects an unlabelled destructive form. Because submitForms applies FORM_SKIP separately, this risk is limited. Confirm that the result is acceptable.

.github/actions/runtime-gate/action.yml (2)

51-64: Apprentice, the action never receives forms-max, and the forms input description promises a limit that you cannot configure.

crawl.mjs reads RG_FORMS_MAX, but action.yml exposes no matching input. This gap is minor. The default value of 3 still applies.

446-446: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Use a commit that contains the crawler changes, Apprentice.

The pinned commit already declares interact-max and forms, and passes them to the runtime-gate action. The claim that these inputs are unknown is therefore false. The implementation match with 93322a6412ad6b0e1c16286a7a15ac53806bc68e is not established by the supplied evidence.

…an run

Lighthouse scores swing from run to run on shared hosted runners, and
LHCI's default assertion aggregation is "optimistic" (the best value per
assertion across runs). New repos copying this example now start with:

- collect.numberOfRuns: 5 (was 3).
- assert.aggregationMethod: "median-run", a top-level assert option in
@lhci/cli 0.14 that applies to every assertion without its own.

Thresholds and levels are unchanged (all `warn`, the advisory house
default). Only lighthouserc.example.json changes.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_012rYJxu978iUSGFZ1UuqTsi
"median-run" does not do what it says for category scores. In @lhci/cli
0.14 (unchanged on main), `categories:*` assertions are scored across
every run, not just the representative one, and getValueForAggregationMethod
has no "median-run" branch, so it falls through to Math.max: the same as
"optimistic". "median" takes the median of the runs for category and
audit assertions alike (reproduced against @lhci/utils 0.14.0).

Only lighthouserc.example.json changes.

… screening, coverage and flake control

- Signed-in crawl: login-path/username/password, signup-path, login-check,
login-script. A failed sign-in is a blocking finding; the explorer starts
signed in and cannot sign itself out.
- Recorded flows: the explorer records successful action sequences;
runtime-gate-flows.yml saves them via a reviewed PR; the crawl replays
them with no model calls (blocking on dependency PRs with flows-strict: auto).
- Prompt-injection pre-pass: heuristics plus a small classifier model screen
every page before the explorer's model sees it; flagged pages are withheld
and reported. Every tool call is validated (allowlisted roles/keys,
same-site navigation, no external links or encoded payloads in typed text).
- Coverage: routes, controls, forms and V8 JS coverage, with the delta
  against the default branch's baseline.
- Flake control: pages with blocking findings are retried once in a clean
context; findings that don't recur are reported as flaky. quarantine input.
- Self-tests: 16 tests including a dynamic fixture app.

…lows.yml

runtime-gate.yml gains login-*, flows-strict, retry, quarantine and
explore-guard inputs, detects dependency-update PRs, and keeps crawl.json in
the baseline artifact for coverage deltas. runtime-gate-flows.yml saves the
explorer's recorded flows through a reviewed PR. The self-test adds a
signed-in end-to-end run against a dynamic fixture app.

… forms via history

- Sign in first: the signed-out crawl fills open sign-up forms with
ci@example.com and could claim the test account's address before the
gate registers it (seen on quarterdeck).
- login-check: only a form with a single password field counts as "still on
  the sign-in page", so a signed-in settings page with a change-password
form no longer reads as a failed sign-in (seen on quarterdeck).
- After submitting a form, always reload the page, and the client-side
navigation pass returns to / with goto instead of goBack: going back to a
form result re-posts the form, which produced false 4xx findings.
- Regression tests for all three.

…ign-in check, static server and entry points

- Collector: a 4xx is only downgraded when it answers a request the form
submission itself sent (its navigation, a non-GET fetch/XHR, or a fetch to
its action or carrying a typed value). Ownership is recorded per request,
so late responses are still judged correctly and unrelated same-origin 4xx
in the same window (polling, lazy chunks) still block.
- Sign-in without login-check: on the sign-in page, any remaining password
field (e.g. a masked security code beside the password) is a failed
  sign-in, not success.
- static-server: path.relative containment (no sibling-prefix escape such as
  /w/dist-secret or /w/dist.html), malformed percent-escapes return 404
instead of crashing the server, port 0 prints the port in use.
- flows.mjs: entry-point check compares file URLs (pathToFileURL of the
realpath), so action paths with spaces or symlinks still run main.
- action.yml: empty wrap array safe under set -u on Bash < 4.4; setup-node
  pinned by commit SHA.

…try points

- crawl.mjs: forms are submitted through Collector.beginSubmission with the
form's action and the dummy values typed, so only that submission's own
requests may answer with an expected 4xx.
- crawl.mjs, explore.mjs: the entry-point check compares
  pathToFileURL(realpath(argv[1])) with import.meta.url; a percent-encoded
or symlinked action path no longer skips main() and exits 0 (a silent
  pass).
- explore.mjs: the same-origin route guard no longer throws on
service-worker requests, which have no frame.
- login.mjs: read the form's action attribute, not the action property
(which an input named "action" shadows).

…for the review fixes

- explore.mjs: entry point compares file URLs (realpath), and the same-origin
route guard tolerates frameless (service-worker) requests. login.mjs: read
the form's action attribute. (Completes 858b3d0, whose message described
  these two files.)
- Self-tests start every server on port 0 and read the port it prints, and
fail fast if a server exits before listening, instead of polling fixed
ports that another process could hold.
- The ignore-list test now asserts the crawl ran (exit 1, the page that logs
the ignored message was visited) and that other errors still block.
- New: a form's own POST answering 404 is a warning while an unrelated GET
404 in the same window still blocks (fixtures/broken/signin.html); a
rejected sign-in that leaves a password + security-code form on the
  sign-in page is a blocking login-failed (fixtures/app-server /login-code).
Both fail against the previous code.

…rty actions; docs

- runtime-gate.yml: the runtime job (which runs the app's install, build,

read. The sticky comment moves to a separate `comment` job that needs
runtime, downloads only the runtime-gate report artifact, reads it as
text, and is the only job holding pull-requests: write.
- Every third-party action in runtime-gate.yml, runtime-gate-flows.yml and
runtime-gate-selftest.yml is pinned to its full commit SHA with the tag as
a trailing comment (same versions as before), so Renovate's digest pinning
  keeps them current.
- runtime-gate-selftest.yml: say why `node-version: current` (account
policy, and what action.yml installs) and why callers still grant
pull-requests: write (a caller must grant what a called job declares).
- upgrades.test.mjs: servers on free ports; a regression test for the
  two-password sign-in form.
- docs/runtime-gate.md: form 4xx scoping, the comment job and the grant it
needs, the sign-in check, the Gemini data-use terms with the source link,
grammar. README: the native auto-merge note links GitHub's plan docs
instead of asserting a plan limit.

- Every third-party action in runtime-gate.yml, runtime-gate-flows.yml and

- runtime-gate-selftest.yml: comments on why node-version stays `current`

- docs/runtime-gate.md: form 4xx scoping, the comment job and the grant it

grammar. README.md: the native auto-merge note links GitHub's docs instead
  of asserting a plan limit.

…kit pin; docs

Completes cb31365, which carried runtime-gate-flows.yml, the self-test and
README.md; this commit carries the two files its message also described.

- runtime-gate.yml: the runtime job (install, build, migrate, start: the
dependency code under test) holds contents: read and actions: read only.
The sticky PR comment is posted by a new `comment` job that needs runtime,
downloads only the runtime-gate report artifact and reads it as text; it is
the only job with pull-requests: write. Third-party actions pinned to
commit SHAs (same versions). Toolkit pinned at
  9842c78 (three refs).
- docs/runtime-gate.md: form 4xx scoping, the comment job and the grant
callers still need, the sign-in check, Gemini data-use terms with the
  source link, grammar.

Self-review by Claude (head 2261b9b)

Checked: every changed file in full:

  • action.yml;
  • all eight src/*.mjs modules;
  • both test files and every fixture;
  • runtime-gate.yml, runtime-gate-flows.yml and runtime-gate-selftest.yml;
  • docs/runtime-gate.md, README.md, default.json and lighthouserc.example.json.

I looked for injection into run:, token scope, unpinned actions, secret handling, dead code, tests that prove nothing, and docs that contradict the code. The test suite ran locally (18/18), and I confirmed the two new regression tests fail against the previous code.

Fixed, beyond the 16 CodeRabbit threads:

  • static-server: / + .html could serve <root>.html next to the serve directory. Containment is now checked for every candidate file (c4c398e).
  • explore.mjs: the same-origin route guard called req.frame(), which throws for service-worker requests. It is now guarded (d6f49cc).
  • crawl/login: the form action is read from the attribute, because an input named action shadows the property (d6f49cc).
  • The unused crawl job output is gone (2261b9b).

Pins: the toolkit is pinned at 9842c78a4caec4d9a5ae2305533175a5c6cee0f9 (runtime-gate.yml ×3, runtime-gate-flows.yml ×1). Third-party actions are pinned to commit SHAs at their existing versions.

For Rishi:

  • Callers still need pull-requests: write for the separate comment job.
  • Commits 858b3d0, 9842c78 and cb31365 carry only part of what their messages describe: I pushed the files in batches. The follow-up commit messages say which commit completes which.

…beside the explorer

The Safety section said the app, its dependencies and the build never see
the Gemini key. The key is only passed to the explorer step, but in command
and static modes the app (and anything its install left running) is still
running as the same user on the same runner during that step, so it can
read the explorer process's environment. Only docker mode isolates it.
Say so, and advise a key that is good for nothing but the Gemini API.

Self-review by Claude (head 4e89080). I read all 45 changed files in full. I rebuilt them from the PR diff and verified them against the branch blobs.

Toolkit (.github/actions/runtime-gate/, tree 73725ef7)
This tree is byte-identical to what TanksterAI/.github#15 merged today. The runtime files (src/, action.yml, package*.json) are also identical at the pinned toolkit commit 9842c78, so the pin runs exactly this code.

  • lib.mjs:
    • collector severity rules are correct: own-origin 4xx/5xx and console errors block, third-party ones do not;
    • per-request submission ownership is recorded in a WeakSet and follows redirects.
  • static-server.mjs: path.relative containment holds for every candidate, and malformed escapes return 404.
  • login.mjs: sign-in success is checked rather than assumed, and the two-password rule is correct.
  • actions.mjs: model tool calls are allowlisted: roles, keys, same-origin navigation, no foreign links or base64 in typed text.
  • injection.mjs: heuristics plus the classifier. The classifier fails open to heuristics only, which is documented.
  • crawl.mjs:
    • destructive and submit controls are skipped;
    • the signed-in crawl never submits a password form;
    • the page is reloaded after a submission, never history-back;
    • retry and quarantine only downgrade, never hide.
  • explore.mjs:
    • the explorer stays on the app's origin;
    • it is refused when it tries to sign out;
    • it is advisory and always exits 0.
  • flows.mjs: fine.
  • Tests make real assertions: crawler, explorer, guard, flows and sign-in each have positive and negative cases. Fixtures are as described.
  • Lockfile: playwright 1.64.0, pixelmatch 8.0.0 and pngjs 7.0.0, matching package.json exactly.

Workflows

  • runtime-gate.yml:
    • inputs reach shell only through env;
    • the runtime job is contents/actions: read, and the comment job is the only one with pull-requests: write;
    • every third-party action is SHA-pinned.
  • runtime-gate-flows.yml: the push is limited to its own runtime-gate/flows branch, on the default branch only, for schedule and dispatch.
  • runtime-gate-selftest.yml: correct grants for the reusable calls.
  • default.json: platformAutomerge: false. The major-upgrade label that the docs mention exists in the preset.
  • lighthouserc.example.json: median aggregation, as described in the body.

Fixed (4e89080, docs only)
The Safety section said the app "never" sees the Gemini key. In command and static modes, the app process (and anything its install left running) is the same user on the same runner during the explorer step. Such a process can read the explorer's /proc/<pid>/environ. Only docker mode isolates the key. The doc now says so. The same fix for TanksterAI is TanksterAI/.github#19.

Observations, not changed

  • Model-written issue text reaches the sticky PR comment escaped only for | and newlines, so markdown links and @mentions pass through. The text is advisory and the page is pre-screened, so this is low risk.
  • fill does not allowlist role, but Playwright rejects unknown roles.

State: 17/17 CodeRabbit threads resolved. CI is green: actionlint, Renovate presets, Toolkit self-test, and the reusable workflow end to end signed out and signed in. CodeRabbit is success. The 4 CodeRabbit CHANGES_REQUESTED reviews are from older heads (7793cd7 to f5b19af), and all their threads are resolved.

Self-review by Claude, follow-up (head a9aba85). The only new commit since 4e89080 is GitHub's merge of main (6cdfd53, #8). It brings in scripts/prune-merged-branches.sh and .github/workflows/branch-prune.yml, which I reviewed on #8. The PR's own 45 files are unchanged.

CI on this head is green: actionlint, Renovate presets, Toolkit self-test, and the reusable workflow end to end signed out and signed in.

Merging is still blocked only by the stale CodeRabbit CHANGES_REQUESTED review (latest 5463006902, at f5b19af). All 17 of its threads are resolved, so it needs dismissing by the owner.
